A Brief Outline of Okinawan Kiko: ryukyuma.blogsp...
Shoshyuten kiko is a fundamental method within Okinawan kiko and was attributed to Daruma who is said to have recorded it in a text called the Ekkin-Kyo.
Funakoshi Gichen sensei, Higaonna Morio sensei, Hokama Tetsuhiro sensei and many other Okinawan teachers have stressed the importance of the Ekkin-kyo method of kiko within the Ryukyu martial arts.
This exercise is roughly equivalent to the "microcosmic orbit" of Chinese "muscle-tendon change" Qi-gong.
Unquestionably it is one of the most important kiko methods preserved in the Ryukyu martial arts.
As Hokama sensei has noted, Okinawan kiko methods are increasingly relevant as interest in the health aspects of the martial arts grows.

Very informative. Too often, the inexperienced learner wants more show and less talking. In my humble opinion, you did very well to explain the processes and correlation with the specific kata. We thank you sir.

Excellent explanation. My teacher's teacher, Chitose, could take a full kick to the groin as well and he attributed it to practicing sanchin kata everyday. This is very useful information. Thanks for posting this, as well as other research you have spent a lot of time on.

In this variation, the purpose is the same (connect CV and GV). It also distinguishes between other differences between men and women: when two hands are on top of each other on the dantian, men (yang) put the right hand (yang) on top, and women (yin) the left (yin). There is a likewise categorization of CV(yin) and GV(yang), and of acupoints on the tongue into yin vs points that are yang which may explain the different tongue positions for men vs women from this point of view of Chinese qigong.

Muscle/Tendon Change is the most common and influential form of martial Qigong. It has involved muscular training and impact conditioning since at least the Ming era. The fact you didn't know this, and didn't know that Sanchin is the most common form of Okinawan kiko shows how little qualified you are to comment intelligently.

When encountering variations it is important to identify the purpose of the exercise within the system. In Okinawan (martial) kiko and Ekkin-kyo qigong the intent is joining the governor and conception vessels in a continuous cycle. The tongue touching the roof of the mouth acts as a physical connection between those two vessels. Since the paths of those vessels are identical in both genders the toungue position -must- be the same if it is going to serve that purpose irregardless of gender.

Of the various exercises that I have posted on KZfaq, this is the only one to use (need) the pelvic tilt. However, it can/should be used anytime you want to raise energy up the back including in Daishyuten and even some marrow-washing exercises.

I've learned from one Taiwanese master that the tongue touching the palate should be done slightly different by women. In contrast to men,women should curl their tongue backward so the bottomside of their tongue touches the palate. I've asked other Chinese masters whether they knew of a difference between men and women in tongue positioning, but they didn't. I've only encountered one other mention of it, and that was in a book called 'the white tigress' (on sexual qigong specifically for women).

By the way, I'm not saying you are wrong - I just want to inform you about a lesser known traditional variation which claims the same purpose of connecting GV and CV. ('The White Tigress' book explains the rarity of this variation as being due to many male qigong masters never having learned of the existence of the female variation and thus passing on the male variation to both men and women, so that over time the male variation came to predominate amongst qigong practitioners of both genders).

I misread your original post. I thought you said the tongue was pressed against the bottom of the mouth which would make zero sense. I've taught women and the method on this video and it worked fine for them (and frankly I can't imagine it making a significant difference). I was taught to touch the bottom of the tongue to the pallet in an Indo-Tibetan yogic practice... so it would seem that men are sometimes taught that method too (albeit yoga and qigong are not identical practices).

thank you for this video! this is very informative! i have just been taught some qigong exercises and what you have illustrated is rather identical! i find the pelvic tilt (the ki pump) to be very interesting. is this a necessity for all of the breathing exercises or is it only for this exercise? many thanks!

There is a problem here. As far as I know, all traditional meridian theory states that the chi flows upwards in both GV and CV. Wish to hear your opinion about that. I have heard you had Morio Higaonna as your teacher. Unfortunately, he has health issues now. What other teachers have you had in Okinawa?

So, everyone who has studied both traditional acupuncture theory and the "microcosmic orbit" (aka "the small heavenly circulation") has had the same question regarding the fact that both meridians seem to flow upwards in acupuncture. I don't know what to tell you. That is just how it is presented in Asian martial arts (especially Chinese and Okinawan MA). I believe it has to do with that these two paths of centerline meridians are said to have superficial and deeper paths that flow in opposite directions. I never trained with Higgaonna shinshii but I've trained with some of his students. He has my deepest respect. He is now 85 years old so I am not surprised he has some health issues. There are not many 85 year olds that don't have health issues... Even if they are Okinawan.

@@thecontemplative2 Thanks for the reply. This video shows my suggestion for a solution to this paradox. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNWfesqTkqzddXk.html Does that make sense to you? I'm training under Yogi sensei. He just turned 90, and yes, big health issues have come in the last years. Unfortunately, he doesn't teach kiko. But Alessandro Arangio is also one of his students.

In order for these methods of the orbit to really work you must have a filled lower dantian or its just playing with illusionary qi.

I have been watching more of your videos on this subject and have been trying to find copies of the texts or videos on Ekkin Kyo and Shoshyuten Kiko. Any suggestions on where to find these? Thanks again.

Almost everthing which has been published is from a Chinese perspective. To the extent that karate books cover it at all it is usually only given a few pages. For a look at the Chinese methods I would recommend _Qigong, The Secret of Youth_ and _Qigong Meditation: Small Circulation_ (which relate to Ekken-Kyo and Shoshyuten respectively)

If I try this way of breathing and visualization of breath when practicing the Heian kata should I expect positive results as well?
@thecontemplative2
@thecontemplative2 5 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely IMHO. Kihon-gata (Naihanchi, Sanchin. and Tensho) are explicitly designed for this method of breathing and visualization... as are a few more rare kata like Happoren. That said, these methods can be useful and helpful in all traditional karate kata. The other kata may be more difficult only to the extent that it may be harder to identify the most useful inhalation and exhalation moments.

My offer to reimburse you for travel expenses (if, and only if, you can succeed in injuring me with a strike below the chin) is still open. If you think I'm a fraud prove it to the world. Just hit me and hurt me. PS Are you seriously asking me to point you towards books on Muscle/Tendon Change Qigong? You really aren't bright enough to figure out how to go to Amazon? Really?
