"Nothing on this printer is half-assed..." That is the best phrase used for a 3D printer I think I have ever heard. Awesome review. I am seriously tempted to get in on this Kick-start campaign just to play with it. Maybe I could finally get into multi-material or multi-color printing. Carbon would be my choice with the MMS option.

I backed this printer... let me state that first. However I don't feel it's fair to say Prusa doesn't innovate. Nearly every printer out is a clone of the Prusa, and they like Apple or android make small iterations and grow their business over time. That being said... the Bambi lab X1 carbon blew me away... all the features are just overwhelming... I'm so happy they are positioning themselves to be the next standard. In 10 years we will look and see many clones of this printer... because if manufacturers like Creality or Elegoo don't respond, they will be forgotten. Great video as always! I love your content.

I’ll buy one as soon as it’s available to ship from their website. This printer will complement my Method-X perfectly (the Method-X’s heated chamber allows me to print large PC parts at 95% infill with perfect flatness and the DEX setup means that I don’t have to watch $170/kg support filament get pooped out the back end of the machine). What this machine will give me over the Method-X is speed, build size, and a not-terrible software experience. I expect this machine will perform all my printing outside of large solid pieces in warp prone materials. I’ll order an AMS if it can be modified to fit Prusa and 3DXTech spools.

Bambu really took everything from the voron and overall open source community and combined it with their dji manufacturing experience to make this. Full credit goes to all the tinkerers that did everything before Bambu, but Bambu is certainly turning the industry on it's head by integrating these ideas into a consumer printer at a good price.

Just received my X1c and it is truly awesome. So fast that videos don't do it justice. It has worked very well out of box. This machine exudes quality and polish and I am very happy with it. There have been a few small bugs: Using polyterra pla the default profile under extrudes by a small amount (this is an easily tuned software parameter in Bambu Studio). This was how I fixed the somewhat common X1 problem of top layer gaps. I have had a few errors where the Z axis failed to home and the printer thought the motors were overloaded. A recent firmware update appears to have fixed this. And I've had a few instances where the ams has pushed filament off the side of the spool when retracting and then when it tries to push that filament into the printer the ams binds up and asks for you to come fix it. In fairness this is with cardboard spools (which they don't recommend with the AMS). The included bed sticks WAY too well and gluestick is an absolute requirement, but you need to reapply very frequently. They sell a textured PEI bed on their site that I'm sure would address this, but you do need a bambulab bed because there is a special section of the bed that the X1 will clean it's nozzle against, so generic beds won't work. These small problems aside, this machine is lightyears ahead of anything else on the market and if you have the money I highly recommend it.

Saved the best for last! Excellent review. Every 3D printer manufacturer should be worried, starting with Prusa and their 8 bit boards. Everyone got complacent. Backed it myself a few weeks ago after seeing how they're already able to deliver, and hope they are able to continue to do so with my and others backing! I have yet to purchase an FDM printer and only have a resin printer. Mostly I've been severely disappointed in setup times, unprofessional solutions, and overall print time of most of these extrusion printers. However, there are some applications where resin is not so great, namely having to deal with working around suction cupping on certain designs. Very excited to see you were able to receive one for an overview!

If this machine delivers what it promises that would be amazing, but i hope it is friendly to modding/upgrading/repairing without too many proprietary parts. I really like the auto calibration part and hope that such a unit might be availble for other printers too maybe even open source.

I really appreciate that you directly tackled the comparison to Prusa and other similar market comps. I believe Prusa is a positive influence to the hobby however I’ve always been turned off by their price point compared to my perception of the build quality/materials. For only a slight price increase, Bambu by contrast offers what appears to be robust and well thought out construction & feature sets that provide some degree of future proofing in that I won’t be rushing out to buy the next mildly iterative product from another company. I’ve backed the X1 Carbon + AMS on day one and look forward to hopefully seeing Bambu deliver on the hardware and software fronts. I also chose to back the Anker M5 and I’m very much so looking forward to seeing how these both influence the greater market hopefully for the betterment of all involved in the hobby, prosumer, and small/medium business worlds.

Thanks for going into some of the mechanical/electrical details, missed that from other reviews. Having the piezo sensors in the bed instead of the nozzle makes a lot of sense!

Great video. This looks cool. But a non-user replaceable nozzle is kind of a buzz kill. This seems so complicated that it's going to have problems and they did not build it with service in mind.

The FDM 3D printing industry haven't been in motion for a long time now, little tiny new features added to multiple devices but never a real game changer. Hopefully, starting from the next year this loop will break, with the new printers on the market actually having something new, the Prusa XL, the Anker 3d printer and now this, hopefully we can see some new and actually useful innovations in FDM 3D printing industry. Though I hope that the open-source spirit of the 3D printing community doesn't fade away with all these patented and mass produced devices, one of the most important things that's been pushing this community forward in my opinion is that our first priority now is actually working together for advancing this technology, not to just make some money and leave.

Really happy to see innovation like this! 2022 is the year that 3D printing becomes smarter.

This will definitely "kickstart" open source printer development. Such as the on head camera for bed leveling and flow calibration, and the under bed leveling sensors.

I backed this and went for the X1 Carbon with AMS. I currently own the original Creality Ender 3. I heavily modified this as far as I can. While I get great prints, I know there is better. This unit from Bambu Labs looks like the next jump in 3D printing. It's already set for the higher temps required filaments, so i can skip upgrading my Ender.....thank God. I'm getting tired of tearing the Ender apart and trouble shooting to get it right. These guys appear to have that solved. Thank Stefon for the excellent video. You are a great credit to the 3D Printing community. I'm sure many have benefited from your knowledge.

The "LIDAR" IS almost certainly a laser triangulation sensor. Low-cost LIDAR only has cm accuracy. Even high end LIDAR can't measure with tens of microns accuracy. It's the wrong tool for the job, whereas laser triangulation is the right tool.

I hope this pressures Prusa to update their LCD board. A 20x4 character monocolor display is really oldschool.

I see that 2.4... I just built mine and it is hard to not be envious of some of the X1 Carbon's features.

I am pretty sure they use the AT8236 motor drive because it's cheaper with the same printing result. These guys come from DJI with million of units made each years. Saving 10cents goes a long way!

Love the innovations and it will help wake up the other 3D printer manufacturers to innovate. I have bought two kickstarter 3D printers and the amount of energy and time I had to put into them to get them flying right was not worth the money saved. I like the Bambulab features but I see a lot of plastic and wonder how the printer will hold up over time. All of my current printers are working very well. I will sit this generation out and wait for the "2.0" versions to arrive.

Excellent video! I believe 08:18 is incorrect. The Bambu Lab blog entry on the AMS explicitly mentions that there is a hygrometer (humidity sensor) in place, but I don't believe its raw output is available anywhere. When the desiccant is used up as detected by the humidity sensor the LCD will warn you to replace it.

I have bought the X1 carbon from kickstarter which cost me 350 dollars just to ship... I didn't even manage to get the early bird. In my defense, I live in Norway which will unlikely get local storage and toll fees for anything non-Norwegian is sky-high. One small victory is the product will be sent by air hence just a few days of shipping instead of a boat which most countries have to use.

Looks like a very well thought out well made machine. Love the camera and scan feature! Hope it is successful. AI and simple histogram detection is not the same.

I emailed Bambu Labs with a technical question and their response time was very fast. They answered my question within a very short time so I believe that customer service is going to be a high priority for them and they seem to have a desire to improve the product as time moves forward. So far I am very impressed.

Excellent video! It baffles me as to why they didn’t utilize the infill area of each printed object for the purge tower, this would greatly reduce waste and nobody cares what the inside of their object is colored. If there is excess purge-to-infill, it can be programmed to utilize as much as possible to complete infill and *then* purge the excess remainder out the rear. By weight, it wasted more filament being purged out the rear of the printer than what was utilized for the Catan pieces.

As someone that has around 10 prusa printers Im honestly pretty tired of them, there is so much room for improvement and it seems like for the last few years they did nothing but rely on the MK3 success with nothing very exciting coming up.

Oh boy! I really hope that bambulab's market entry will be successful! If it is, this will become one of my favourite textbook examples of great innovation management! They have it all! Being a spin off from DJI, an unlikely competitor for the established companies, taking Prusa, Ultimaker etc. by surprise. They offer a great customer value with their automated tuning process and hasslefree setup. They bring new tech to the table that the established firms don't have. They enter the market via a low risk, high publicity campaign, securing funding and advertising at once. And they apparently did their economics homework and planed their production scale ahead. Please let them be succesful and give the 3D printer industry some fresh competition! I would love to see this work!

Bambulab X1 Carbon: The new reference or another upcoming Kickstarter Desaster?

I have had my own projects funded on Kickstarter successfully and I backed this one. I feel pretty confident in it and I am looking forward to getting this bad boy up n running.

First, I just wanted to point out a few issues they have said they will resolve, but still are pretty big annoyances. 1. Doesn't allow printing over the network with out internet access. Instead you can only use microsd. That's a problem 2. It doesn't not currently tune up each filament of a multi material print, which you might want it to do before the print 3. People have had issues saving filament settings for each of the 4 spools when using non rfid spools (bug not purposeful as best I can tell) Now, to answer this videos call to action, and from a previous post asking the same question: I dislike the proprietary stuff, I dislike the firmware lock down, I dislike the WiFi only, and I absolutely hate only allowing cloud not just local networking. All that said, I think I might back it (as in I pledged for the all included model) Why? it does nearly everything I've wanted out of a printer. Auto flow compensation, input shaper, first level checking, high speed, all material hotend, direct drive, mmu etc. No other printer has come close to checking all of those boxes and automating processes that are just annoyingly tedious (like input shaper or pressure advance). These are all things I've been modifying my large bed slinger to be closer to forever. So far I managed speed through klipper, an accelerometer, hemera, copper volcano, and bigger nozzle (which means less accuracy) and a few other things but many of these require manual tweaking and need retuning every time I make a change from big filament changes to belt tightening. I have been a 3d printer tinkerer for a long time to the point of stripping down a large bed singer, changing all the electronics, installing a hemera, skr2, klipper, volcano... the works. I realized I don't actually enjoy feeling like I need to constantly upgrade. I just want the printer to be what I think it should be, and this checks most of those boxes while costing 1/4th the prusa xl, which would have been a stretch for me. With this, I hope I can finally move away from 3d printing forcing itself to be a main hobby and having it be a tool I can choose to make a hobby whenever I want. I would think about the prusa xl, but they are just way too late and way too expensive. Worse yet, they don't have nearly the amount of auto calibration and for my purposes, are missing features like input shaper and they are similarly locked down in practicality while being open in theory so things like input shaper are just not possible unless they say so. If I'd have to do so much work to get klipper working in it and setup an accelerometer etc etc... well, we are back to square one of me tinkering on my cheap big bed slinger. I'm tired of that. I want to spend more of my limited time making cool projects not printer upgrades.

I have this printer for testing and figured out how to print Nylon CF on this with good surface finish and the best Z layer bonding. My formula is: 300c for eSun PA6-CF. Dry the filament really well first. Heat bed to 110. Disable the part fan in the default settings. Start with their Nylon-CF profile. I cut acceleration and outside wall speed in half. I didn't compare to see if this was important, but it was still so fast I didn't want to try it both ways. My layer height was 0.16. Vent the top glass 1 inch for two reasons. One is to greatly reduce or eliminate the surface blobs (I would like to see a checkbox in the slicer to do a nozzle wipe on each layer). Two is that if the chamber gets too hot, the filament that is designed to print at 265c will get soft and can slip in the extruder gears. I would like to see a feature to vent the enclosure by their exhaust fan at 40c or 50c to eliminate the need for this top-venting.

This is it. The consumer 3d printer. Love it.

The automated setup for a print is seriously something the prusa and Altimaker need to take note of. bambu didn't do anything revolutionary, but they are the closest to "it just works" that we have. Bambu is the printer for people that don't want to tinker. You get better possible outcomes with Prusa, but it REQUIRES tinkering.

I was a Kickstarter backer of the Buccaneer, I learned my lesson.

I don't think anything is going to shake Ender3 and its endless clones from the market. There is simply no other way to start learning 3d printing at such a low price. This printer really makes a strong case for the HyperCube and the amazing work of Tech2C.

We needed a relatively cheap and reliable core-xy printer that works right after unboxing it, no need to assemble anything or print parts with previous printers.

What is shocking is how expensive Ultimakers are. $5k+, commonly. But they captured the institutional market for plug-n-play ...

Hey Stefan, I just wanted to say I really appreciate your coverage on the machine. Especially closer looks at the electronics and how everything works. Im pretty bummed that the AMS has some spool limitations. I definitely have a more positive outslook on the machine after seeing all of this, I'm not going to buy until it goes retail, i've been burned by lesser investments in the past, but these guys seem to have everything worked out. That being said, i certainly see it getting much more expensive with domestic stock that includes tariffs and shipping to the warehouse.

This is the kick in the ass the industry needs, even big names are getting lazy and it's not helping to bring the hobby mainstream.

Its going to need to be as open as other printer manufacturers for me to consider it, its also why I avoided DJI in the drone space. Also I don't like the proprietary nozzle+heater block.

I've backed it up and was one of the first doing so. This is the first and probably also the last time I backed some thing up on Kickstarter because of their terms and conditions. I think Kickstarter needs an overhauling in backers security for some instance as the basic idea of it is still something I am convinced of. For Values of app. 1K it should be guaranteed that you get something in return and that not 'weather' conditions can be the reason to loose everything. Beside that I am convinced that the X1 is going to be the so long needed fresh breeze for the 3D printing community. I can't wait to hold my X1 in the hands soon.

If those motor controllers afford them more direct voltage control, it's possible that they could actually be a really smart decision. Driving the two stepper motor coils with 90-degree out-of-phase sine signal rather than a step/dir signal could offer huge benefits in eliminating vibration. Even if we consider microstepping, which is essentially the same sort of interpolation, it would bypass the step-based communication layer, offering more freedom in either timing or positioning motor state updates.

1 year later and this printer changed the market for the better. We now have fast no hassle printers even at low- mid range prices.

This will make 3 d printing even more mainstream, the LiDAR part is awesome, looks like excellent job, the time to start if it reduces failure will be great

It’s the speed - that’s the thing - 3x over current tech is really valuable and in my mind that’s where the effort needs to go for printer manufacturers.

That's definitely not LiDAR, it's a 2d laser profiler. It's not counting the time it takes for light to travel so it's not LiDAR. It projects a line at a known angle and analyses the shape of the line on a 2d sensor and does simple trig for each pixel to calculate the height. Including a laser profiler for that price is frankly amazing. Very impressive printer and I may get one instead of building a voron.

Lets be honest: Prusa should not cost around $1000. Outdated design, 3D printed part... when you pay such money you sponsor Joseph for his open source work for community. As result many people uses his work for free, Prusa sell less printers and because of that printer price is higher that it should be. BambuLab doesn't give anything back to community, they don't open source anything.

I've used similar integrated and USB-C connected toolboards with Klipper on my printer. The USB-C cable probably carries 24V and CAN bus. Definitly not something you want to connect to your phone. Otherwise I really enjoyed the more in depth look on the printers internals. Exactly the level of detail I come here for. Funnily enough I was quite hyped for it and backed it initially, but later on pulled my backing. I dont really have doubts about its qualities, but in the end I mostly want a machine to tinker with and this is not it. And I dont print enough parts otherwise to make this machine worth it.

Great review! On their US site you can make a deposit and once a unit is available and your number is up, you pay the rest of the cost and they ship it out. (at least thats whats stated on the site). Hope my number comes up soon and it gets shipped out. Looking forward to giving it a try.

I think that it will bring the core xy more into the forefront. It's there now but the ender clones may move further back as the price for making the xy printers gets lower. Yes, I have backed it. I am anxiously awaiting a unit.

faster does not mean better, that plastic filament need a rest/cooldown too

I've 'ordered' one and just hope it will survive the long shipment to Germany, people say will take up to 6 weeks, so better don't expect this awesomeness in July if it's going to be shipped by ship. IMO the first thing that other companies should offer is at least an optional enclosure. I just started with 3D-printing in October last year and the first things I was printing were parts for my DIY-case made with aluminium profiles and acrylic plate. It's not that I preferred it to a ready-made solution (could be offered way cheaper produced in bulks), but I couldn't find any for reasonable prices. My case does not only keep the dust outside and makes printing ASA like PLA, but there is also almost no smell even while printing ABS and it's considerably more quiet, energy-efficient with lower heat emissions. But this thing even makes printing without headed bed easy, or did you use a headed bed for PLA? Could you be so kind and measure the footprint of the case? Can't find any infos about it.

I think Prusa have made a strategic mistake putting their prices up with the advent of this machine. If anything, they need to be cutting prices with this kind of competition.

Yaaaas! Finally some digging into the details of the printer. Many don't get past "look, it prints fast, AMS *cough*MMU*cough*, and poop shoot". And finally a good look at the "LIDAR". Every time I brought that up, someone went "well they innovated on that. Nobody else has. All the other LIDAR systems aren't accurate or small enough" and now I see that it isn't really LIDAR in the way everyone knows it. Their solution still works, but it's like taking a sports car and calling it a race car. You can... but it misses what makes them different. I'm very happy they credit models and people and don't just take it. They certainly did their research to make a good printer. I'm still not sold until units get into people hands months down the line. That first shipment will be fine, but future shipments and manufacturing runs are what I'm more curious on. Your review was great. The only thing I worry about, and covered only by 1 other review (Breaks n Makes), is that apparently they're going to have subscriptions for slicer features and similar in the future. So how many of the features people are raving about will remain is to be seen. I did a larger writeup elsewhere, but the one part I want to bring over is one you mentioned; this is a needed wakeup call. I expect Prusa and a few others can adapt, but many won't. I also have stated "too many in 3D printing try to hardware-solution their way out of a software problem" and I think that is what's gonna make and break this and other systems. You can add as much cross bracing as you want, but if your system still gets ringing then you need software... and if the 3D printer community becomes "I just take it out of the box and print", then all the exposed wires and motors that make these machines tinker-er friendly are going to be the minority and may even be rejected for those reasons. (Tinkering will not go away though). Time will tell, but it's a step in the right direction. Will they become a Prusa/Ultimaker or will they fall by the wayside as others start to hit feature parity... to be seen.

What was holding me back from buying this one was the question about the parts supply. I went with the Anycubic Kobra instead and even for this one, getting parts is a challenge!

I backed it. Was about to back the Anker but, thankfully, I decided its just a fancier version of my Prusa MK3S so I decided not to back Anker. I had trouble with selecting a pledge, I tried to get the early bird one as soon as the Kickstarter campaign started but I couldn't. I gave up and got the X1 carbon combo instead. I still ended up being backer 1,700+! That was in the first 10-20 minutes, I think.

I'm really excited for this printer to hit the market, but there's one thing that I don't really like: the material waste with multi-color/multi-material printing. I just wouldn't be comfortable with that level of material waste unless I had some way of recycling it into filament, and the market for that is really quite small. Who knows, maybe this machine will drive that market to expand.

Backer #39 here… I am really tired of fiddling with Enders and so on… so I hope this printer will do what I want: print in a good quality. Period!

From the feature list it looks like it sets the new standard in this price area. Which is really what we need. If it lives up to the expectations it could be a game changer.

It’s hard to know what to say. I’ve taken part in five Kickstarter projects over the years. Two came out well. The product was what they said it would be. Another was disappointing. The other two failed. I consider that to be just a 40% success rate. This looks interesting and a far more finished product right now. But the problem is that they may never get the software to work properly, the hardware problems may never be solved. They may not sell nearly as many as they need to in order to break even. They may go out of business shortly after they begin actual sales. It’s impossible to know. I am in the market for a good, fairly fast 3D printer to use in my shops. I haven’t found anything that less than $10,000 that’s really producing decent parts at a decent speed. This does look interesting, and even if it retails for $2,000 for the XL model, if its problems are solved, it would be cheap for what it does. Adding another $500, or so, for the multi-filament accessory is more than reasonable. If it makes it that far, and the final reviews are good, and I’ll be looking here for that, then I’ll buy one. But before? No. The only thing that I would like to see here is the same thing that was mentioned as disappointing - a 350 temperature capability.

Ive got one and its amazing... Had 2 mk3s, but now i rarely use them anymore because of the X1 carbon. Mostly if iam too lazy to take off the AMS for TPU. The X1 never failed me so far and its amazingly fast and accurate.

This seems like a great machine but I don't think it will be the next reference because of proprietary parts and software. What I think makes prusa a reference machine is the off the shelf parts and opensource software. If I had a print farm I would rather have a machine where I can get the parts from many places and software/config fixes from a community. It seems like the consumer 3d printer industry is changing as fast as the PC industry in the 80s . The winner of the PCs was not a specific PC but a platform that was cloned .
