Your forks are probably the single most complex and expensive component on your bike. To get the best performance and lifespan out of them, you need to do some routine basic servicing.
A lowers service is a simple standard maintenance task that most home mechanics can perform if done slowly and with care. If not done within the suggested service interval, then your fork can become irrevocably damaged and expensive to repair or replace.
In this video we perform this service on a Rock Shox SID fork, replacing the dust seals and re-assembling with lubes and oils.

Extremely helpful and to the point, best video I have seen so far and 1000X better than the B&W service manuals.

I have a rockshox xc 30 and have an issue with the seal popping upwards. I tried to service the fork but couldn't get the lowers apart, do you know how to fix this issue?

Man just found the rebuild vid you did on the marzocchi fork. Now im just going through all your fork rebuilds/ servicing videos. Awesome work man super detailed and easy to follow along! So i have a question though regarding your dust seals you replaced on this fork in this video. As long as a dust seal fits in the lowers can you use a different brand than what is in your lowers currently? Thanks

sort of, you can use 3rd party seals but they need to be compatible with the fork. I use enduro seals from real world cycling.

I rebuilt some dirt jumpers and gave them a new coat of paint, they didn't have a foam ring so am I safe to assume they don't need one? Cheers

Hi, great explanation! Beside the amount of oil needed, would it be the same on a Marzocchi 55 RS?

Similar process for most forks. You can take the carefully disaasembling approach if going in blind but you will likely find the manual here. my-sport.spb.ru/manual_1/index-16.htm

Super helpful video, especially knowing I can pull the seal up with a spanner vs needing a special tool like I’ve seen in other tutorials. My seals seem really stuck in though - any tips for freeing them or am I just not pulling hard enough? Also are you only pulling up or are you levering leverage against the opposite side of the seal? If you lever will that damage them and prevent you from reusing them? Thanks!
@StravaigingMTB
@StravaigingMTB 4 жыл бұрын
If your reusing them you dont need to remove them, only remove if your replacing them due to wear or damage. And yes lever against the opposite side, brace against a shop rag so you don't damage the fork lowers.

Would fully synthetic engine oil be ok, sram recommend 0w-30 oil so I'm thinking 0w-30 engine oil????? Only for the lowers of course.

I've heard of people doing this. To be honest I would only ever use suspension specific oil. You dont know if the seals and O rings are going to react with the oil, they can swell amd cause binding or degrade. The other thing with suspension oil is it has anti foaming agents to keep it consistent. Its not expensive, a bottle of 7.5w Stendec is about £6. Appreciate any tips on removing stuck large plastic rebound adjuster from Marzocchi Marathon, so I can change the oil ?
@StravaigingMTB
@StravaigingMTB 4 жыл бұрын
yeah the rebound adjuster for a tend to do that. Soak it in some gt85 or a good penetrating oil for 24 hours, turn it back and forth to ease out any grit or dirt. then gently prise with a flat head screwdriver.

here is a detailed break down of a more modern Zocchi fork but the damper will be very similar. the lower service will be more or less identical. don't forget to like and sub! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5Z6eZhqqLeUaGw.html

A day after i bought my GT Aggressor Sport MTB the forks started to squeak/creek whenever i pushed down on them, why?
@djmystery7235
@djmystery7235 4 жыл бұрын
Okan Korsal probably doesn’t matter anymore but it’s probably because it was shifting around where the stanchions were pushed into the crown.

im running canecreek helm coil im doing lower legs soon do i have to add oil with them being coil?
@StravaigingMTB
@StravaigingMTB 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would check the helm manual but the lower oil is a lubricant to stop the stanchion wearing itself out against the inside of the lower leg.

Are most forks pretty similar, or is this pretty Rockshox specific?
@StravaigingMTB
@StravaigingMTB 3 жыл бұрын
For a lowers service this is pretty standard. Check your brands service instructions for the correct oil levels and to ensure there is no specialist tools required (x fusion have a special tool) and if so how to work without it.
