Hey DJ Rachel, great video. I believe in using whatever works for you. There are various options vinyl, CD's, computers, and standalone's. None of these are the be-all-end-all for DJing. I started 31 years ago with vinyl and I today use a MacBook Pro. It's doesn't matter what you have. As long as you can get on your set and rock the party. Keep people smiling and dancing the night away that's all that matters. It's about loving what you do and yes, a backup / plan b is a must. Thanks for sharing this video.

I totally agree on having a backup PC/Mac. Two weeks ago I was DJing outside on the ground floor of a two-story house. There was a deck above me. Someone had a cooler on the top deck and the water from the cooler spilled directly on my computer. Party was a wrap. Had a cell phone but it wasn’t enough. Great video.

Sorry to hear about that! I’m glad it didn’t happen during anything crazy important. I have several other options if my laptops or controller go bad. I have a 1 TB iPad as well as my iPhone with all essential music needed for the event as well as a few 30 minute mixes to buy me time. I could stream via Bluetooth to one of my EVOLVE50s and then use the Mixout to connect it to the other speaker or I could connect directly with a 3.5 mm to XLR cable. I have a Hercules star light which is a micro USB controller that I could connect and use DJAY PRO AI.

About the placement of the laptops… Some events I do have them off to the side, but never weddings. At weddings I like them side by side for a few reasons. The first reason is work flow. I will choose function over vanity any day. It’s much easier for me during, especially during Grand Entrance/ Introductions to be looking forward then having to split of view to each side. If I need to swap over to my other laptop for any reason my eyes can track things better with a side by side view. That’s just me. I also keep a digital copy of the names on the other laptop just incase. My eyes just find it easier to switch over that way. In addition, to be honest- I’m not a turntablelist. I don’t scratch or give off a Redbull 3 Style vibe. Nobody is watching me work because well… it’s not that interesting. 😂 I’d rather them be dancing and having fun rather then staring at me hitting hot cue buttons anyway. Haha. With my style of DJing nothing is lost performance wise by having both laptops in front. I didn’t really get this new booth to be more “accessible” to the audience, I just wanted to be able to leave me stuff connected for easier setup and breakdown.

The key is what you are comfortable with. I've never known any computer (Mac or Windows) to not fail. Those that say well, my brand never fails or never gets viruses, are drinking the Kool-Aid and believen' the hype. All electronics fail. That's just facts. Personally, I've been using Windows computers since the days of DOS. I know that if something happens to my settings or my computer, I know enough about the software and the hardware to fix it. The point of the video was not what brand or OS you use, the point was Rachel covers her ass so her clients never need to worry.

I've always used a MacBook Pro and never ever have had issues. But all professional DJs should have backups of all your equipment. I have another Mac as a backup for my computer - never have had to use it but still a necessity. I've never put both computers on my DJ setup as it only takes minutes to plug the other one in if I need it and I mainly use a 4 channel controller (Pioneer SZ2) so I always have a backup prepped on the 4th Channel. Yes, great advice for mobile DJs - always, always have a backup plan. Great video.

While we all should want to grow to become the best at what we do everyone is different. I don’t want to be the best DJ Rachel mini me I can be, I want to be the best Shawn I can be using what I’m comfortable with and developing my own MC skills, mixing skills and visual performance skills. Ive had the Macbook argument so many times. I have always used PCs, I always have 2 laptops, 2 controllers and 2 hard drives. Dont let the agitators get to you. You are doing it right, keep doing what you are doing. You can never be over prepared.

Dropping ONE laptop and braking it, it's happening; dropping TWO laptops in the same day and braking both if they are in different case/location, it's IMPOSSIBLE.

Luckily never dropped a laptop! 😅 Super careful and never leave them in my car either. However, I have had one crap out on me. At weddings gotta have another ready to go. I refuse to compromise performance over not having a good backup. 💯

Such REAL & VALUABLE advice!!! I don’t carry a second laptop (although not a bad idea) but I do carry a backup hard drive and an rca-aux cable along with a Samsung s10 loaded with a few mixes in case I ran into any technical issues. Any DJ who bashes your advice has not dealt with the same type of events or as many. I still get nervous for every one of my weddings (after 12 yrs) but it’s so gratifying to see how happy my clients are after the end of the day. All DJ’s need to PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!

Great video and plan Rachel! There were times where my laptop worked great for the first 3 hours but in the 4th hour it started to have problems...I like the idea of two laptops in that case. 😀

It’s definitely come in hand many times! It’s not the only way to do things, but it is a great option if you ever need a backup! Thanks for stopping by the channel! Cheers!

Good vid. I bring both brands of laptop's , MacBook pro and an Asus PC . If one crashes, I have the other. Honestly, I've had less issues with the PC. The Mac gets really hot sometimes and I've had to replace the logic board which was not cheap.

My gaming laptop has very beefy fans. Never have overheating issues. I also keep my fans cleaned and maintained 2x a year.

@@DJRachelLynch you definitely bought the right type of laptop's . Gaming laptops are best. They have much better cooling and upgraded graphics cards to handle the demands of any large pro DJ software

Thank you for your honesty and your advice. For me I have a pioneer XDJ RR as my main controller with my main usb stick, plus 2 backup ones. I also have a MacBook and an iPad Pro, both have full copies of my music. I also have a numark mixtrack platinum as a backup controller so I can perform on any of these with the same professionalism. You are totally right any kind of technology/equipment can go down. I have had my iPad DJ app (algorithum dj pro) just quit on me with a packed dance floor a couple of time, thankfully rarely. What ever equipment setup you choose to use and what works for you is your right to choose. Oh yes and if you want to rant that’s fine also :)

I agree on a backup laptop; but maybe they both don't need to be connected (and in your face ;-). I switch from a S4 controller 10 years ago to a normal dj mixer with seperate controllers. In that case I can easily trust on a small Ipod or phone as a few songs backup. Time enough to restart or replace the laptop in case it crashes. great videos Rachel. Greetings from Amsterdam.

Thanks for checking this video out! ☺️ I think having them connected just makes it a much more safe and seamless transition to the backup. Imagine if this crash happened during the grand entrance or their first dance? You don’t have time to setup an additional laptop without disruption or looking chaotic. If I had a 12 party grand entrance I would not want to be fumbling with an iPhone or other backup device when all eyes are on me trying to DJ and MC their big moment from a phone. The point is to maximize performance with the backup. To me, that means having a secondary laptop connected and ready to go at a moments notice. As for the laptops being “in my face”, this is strictly a workflow choice for my weddings. I like to be able to look forward during my introductions and find it easier to swap my workflow between my computers if I needed to go from one to the other. I will always choose performance over vanity. I’m also not a turntablelist so no one‘s really watching me do intricate cuts or Redbull 3Style type performances. 🤣

It’s DJMIKEY Z From Chicago 👋 Man did u light them up and opened their eyes and simultaneously have upset the entire Apple 🍏 community while doing it!! 🙌🏻😂🤣🤦‍♂️💪🏻 Yo go girl! 🔥🔥🔥 Hey just a thought might wanna try the XMG DJ laptop made in Germany. It’s a Windows DJ laptop for DJs handles high heat better than Mac book Pros, plus low latency and audio processing, plus more. Stability high level. I got two of them. It’s weird I’m a Windows DJ 😅 but iPhone guy.. Love your teachings, you got the talent to get the message across you go Competent Rachel!!🎧🎤🕺
