Harmonic Mixing is an advanced technique used by top DJs all over the world. By mixing tracks that are in the same or related keys, harmonic mixing enables creative blends and great sounding mash-ups. The goal is to eliminate key clashes and mixes that sound off balance. Harmonic mixing consists of two elements: knowing the key of the song and knowing which keys are compatible. This may sound hard, but with available technology, this is easier than ever!
VDJ 2020 takes all the guesswork out of harmonic mixing and puts advanced tools at the touch of your fingers. Anyone can learn to do this. This video reviews the advanced harmonic mixing software basics and shows some examples of why it is important to know how to mix in key.

Great explanation of harmonic mixing nice vid! I"ve just started using harmonic mix as I"ve become more conformable with beat matching...those two things combined have transformed the professional vibe of my sets, highly recommend focusing on harmonic mixing to elevate to a "pro" vibe. Oh also liked the "change it back" to the recorded key once out of leaving track, smart!

A very good and simple explanation on this feature, I do dabble with it, but not get too anal over it. You hit the nail on the head, play to the floor and audience, especially most of us being mobile jocks playing out with different genres, BPMs and decades. Another tool in the box, well done Rachel, great work.

Thank you so much for checking this out. I couldn't agree more. It is a great tool for the toolbox. Use it when it makes sense, but it's not something to solely rely on to clean up horrible mixes. HAHA! DJs still need to their job and play for the crowd and the vibe they are trying to create. I use it when needed and it really allows me to be more creative.

Huge, huge mark of a professional DJ mixing by harmonics and not bpm. Sure, you can do bpm but harmonics is a principal of music theory that everyone at the end of the night can either say "yeah that DJ was on fire she was killing it" or "that dj was alright". It's a phenomenon people with no musical training at all can "feel" even if they can't understand it. Big shift in how I mixed, irrefragably. *BPM mixing is much harder than harmonic mixing btw* if we're picking sides amongst other wedding DJ's.

chadnliz2k11 I couldn’t agree more! Too much of anything isn’t good. Especially “Dj effects”. I love the term tool you mentioned. That’s exactly what it is. You need to know when to use it and when to dial it back. I use it sparingly and always try and turn it off to get back to the original song. I find that I get caught in this vortex of weird tones if you just let auto key bleed into every track. I don’t like it personally. I appreciate you taking the time to check this out! Have a great night. 🙂

Awesome video once again. I noticed in all three examples you bumped your BPM a bit on both tracks from 124 to 126. Is this the BPM/tempo you usually like to work at or was it just for these example? I have noticed some djs consistently keep all tracks just above their natural tempo for energy. Just wondered if this is something you do also and if so why? Keep up the awesome work. Always look forward to your stuff.
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 4 жыл бұрын
Dustin Serrette so it completely depends on the songs and what I’m trying to accomplish BPM wise. How I usually make gradual pitch shifts (let’s say from 105 BPM to 120 BPM) is to take a track a track that’s 105 and bump it to like 108. Then I’ll take a song that’s 115 and match it to 108 and then as the transition is happening I’ll let the pitch slider out to get back to 115. Then the next song that’s 120 I’ll bring down to 115 BPM and slowly let it out to 120BPM etc. etc Sometimes I split the difference like you see here and then reset the tempo. I tried to not make a lot of adjustments in this video so that nobody got confused that’s why I left it unadjusted. If that makes sense. Otherwise I would have moved the tempo to its original one.

I saw your other reply on this but just wanted to be sure- you are finding a "netral" BPM for both songs and doing harmonic mixing and as you get into song B you are bringing the BPM to "normal at some point early in the song. Probably works better bringing a BPM up versus slowing it down? Sorry DJ newbie here
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 4 жыл бұрын
RT Yes. You got it. I find a BPM that’s reasonable for both tracks. Example a 108 BPM mixed with a 119 BPM track, I’d level them out to 112 BPM and then gradually raise the track back to 119BPM. The ear wouldn’t pick up on that subtle of a difference in BPM.

IS there a keyboard shortcut to load songs in VDJ.. like in Serato, it’s shift and arrow to either deck... I’ve never seen anyone use a shortcut, people always use the mouse and click and drag..
@DJRachelLynch

Itsa Me DJ Mario The beaut of VDJ is that it is completely mappable with its key bird shortcuts. So the short answer is yes, you can load songs in VDJ with a keyboard short cut. I use Ctrl+x to load deck 1 and Ctrl+v for deck 2. Ctrl+x load deck 1 Ctrl+v load deck 2 Or you can double click a song and it will load in the opposing deck without having to drag the track.

Dirk Diggler Technology has made DJing more assessable and easier to get into. I truly feel that regardless of the available technology the talented entertainment will rise to the top and those who refuse to learn the craft and develop a skill will sink to the bottom and get left behind. Look at the battle DJs and RedBull 3style DJs who are some of the top competitors in the world. They all use technology and are amazing with it. It allows them to be super creative and unique. Do things they could never do without it. However they are all still insanely talented and dope. I don’t knock technology. I frown upon those who use it as a crutch and make no effort to develop their personal skills. Thanks for stopping by the channel! Stay well. 🙂

Don’t worry I can’t sing at all either! 😂 While some people do have a God given talent to “hear” things in key, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn the skill or master the Harmonic mixing feature in VDJ to help you do so! Don’t let that discourage you. Music is VERY mathematical and cracking the “code” just takes some time and understanding. I highly recommend watching some KZfaq videos on the Camelot Key.

It's called being tone deaf. I had the same problem when I started out, however unlike being color blind you can actually train your ear to pick up on the tone of music and sounds. All these fake ass new DJ’s don’t even know how to scratch on stacks if wax ...
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 4 жыл бұрын
Yapaul Aung A DJ has two choices.... Embrace technology or get left behind. I have nothing but respect for traditional “wax” and truly skilled turntableists who are purists and chose to use it, however as a mobile DJ it is not practical or economical to use vinyl at mobile events. Digital music has allowed DJs freedom and flexibility. With streaming apps like Spotify, KZfaq music, Pandora, etc. clients EXPECT you to have a huge collection of music available. A collection so large, no DJ “spinning wax” could accommodate. It’s essential as a mobile DJ to stay musically relevant and cater to the masses with a well rounded and eclectic database. Frankly, unless a couple or venue is looking specifically for a vinyl experience from their DJ.... NOBODY cares what you use. In addition most private events don’t care about scratching. I’m not saying they don’t care if a DJ can mix. A DJ should be able to mix two songs correctly but in general the only people who care about these things are other DJs. I also find these “purists” are typically threatened or turned off by technology. My opinion is, play good music, ensure your clients are happy, get paid, rinse and repeat. It’s that simple. 🙂 This, like many other DJ software features are merely tools to use. They do not make the DJ. They do not replace the ability to read a crowd or essential skills needs to throw a good party. They are there to use as much or as little as you like.
