Check out the updated tutorial: • Fill a frame with NO E...
It can be very confusing when trying to understand the difference between Set to Frame Size vs Scale to Frame Size. They both look like they are doing the same thing, but one can give you pixelated results if you add additional scaling the the clip.

Thanks. I learned this one the hard way. I do a lot of scanning and zooming. Scale to Frame left me with pixelated images (which I hate). Just out of desperation I tried 'Set To...' and voila, the clouds parted and the choir sang.

I guess. Btw I have a question maybe tou can answer. My system is a windows and it's capable of editing 4K just fine. However, on my recent project, I notice that when I have more than one track with a 4K video stacked on top of each other (i do this as first step of music video editing-i line up all my clips with the song in sync, then cut from there) the lag is terrible in preview, no matter if it is playing in Full or 1/6 quality. Also, when I check my task manager, the cpu is at like 95%, even though I've done editing like this before with no issues. Any idea or suggestions what might be going on? I just freed up space on my ssd card by clearing out media cache files and preview files so hopefully that will work but I'm not hopeful
@spencersharp
@spencersharp 7 жыл бұрын
Oh and also, the lag is somtimes accompanied by an error message that says "audio is not in sync" , even though i delete the audio from the clips and just have one audio file (the song for the music video). Thank you for reading, I appreciate your videos

Normally I'd say that multiple tracks of 4k is the bottleneck but if you've been editing fine like this for a while and all of a sudden changed it's lagging, then that is odd. I'll take a guess that you didn't change any settings, including the Enable accelerated Intel h.264 decoding in the Media section of the Preferences? Other than that, I'm stumped.

Thanks for the video. Adobe named the set and scale options backwards in my opinion. If I want to scale my 4K footage down to my 720 timeline, and leave it so as 4K footage so that it can be zoomed in slightly without digitizing, you'd think I should choose "Scale to frame size" , since I am wanting to "scale" my footage down. Nope, instead Adobe has labeled this "set to frame size". Very confusing.

6000 X 4000 is a 3:2 aspect ratio so it will never fit into a 16:9 Project evenly. You have to scale the images manually to fit them.

I really like your videos - I am a colorist and trying to broaden my editing - So new to Premiere. I see a lot of people using 4k footage ( UHD ) on a 1080 timeline to crop in or reframe ( pan etc. ). Which is pretty much what you are covering here. My problem arises when you mix that in with Proxies - Need the proxies to work well for multicam but - Premieres way of handling seems a little confusing. I take the 4k files and make 1920 x 1080 proxies and then thought I could use a 980 x 540 timeline and the proxies would be the same scale but it seems that I switch from proxy to original while in that timeline and the preview window changes the file, but not the scale of the preview. Can't find a tutorial on doing this ( 4k to 1080 multicam with proxies ) Do you have something close to that in your repertoire? - Or should I just match resolution and use a quicker codec (smaller bit ) so the end result is closer? What do you recommend for a proxy for multicam?

The functions of resizing multiple formats is not available when making a Multicam Source Sequence; you need to manually change the scale to match the Sequence. Here is a tutorial on creating Multicamera Sequences.

I looked this up this morning because I was using a lot of still images. It seems like the secret is to do the opposite. For still images that will pan and zoom go with SET to frame size. If you just want it to fit SCALE to frame size. I need to figure out a way to remember that with word play. Scale once, set always?
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, Set for pan and scan is best. And honestly, I never use Scale, I always do it manually.

Dropping a clip with dimensions higher than the sequence dimensions = use scale to frame size Dropping a clip with dimensions smaller than the sequence dimensions = use set to frame size True or the other way around?
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
The change in scale is identical with both operations: the clip will scale (up or down) until one of the dimensions fits within the current Sequence frame size. The difference is how the clip is "processed", with Scale to Frame Size not changing the scale property, instead it's as if the clip was rasterized to the new frame size. So a 4k clip in an HD Sequence takes the same resources as an HD clip but scaling it higher will reduce quality. Set to Frame Size simple changes the Scale property.

Yes. When you place something in a lower resolution Timeline, then it now is set to that resolution. When you export to a higher resolution, you just resize the footage and it will not be as sharp. I suggest using a Proxy workflow: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b59joMWGxpbMXas.html

@VideoRevealed

Hmm, nothing is really going to help upscaling the HD to 4k, but I would use Set To Frame Size. You may want to try using After Effects to upscale using the Effect "Detail-preserving Upscale". It's not magic but it's the best upscale algorithm from Adobe.

Great video! I'm glad I found your site. You are a God send to all newer and older videographers. Big Question....Call me old fashion if you like, I am still using Premiere Pro 6 CC and love it. Recently I bought a Panasonic HC X1. I made some of my own sequences following some other youtube sites, however, I still felt that in some clips, I was missing some pixels that I would need for post zooms. I followed your advice, but PP6 doesn't have the option (that I know of) to set the frame size, only scale. I did "unchecked scale" in preferences, but I have to manually downscale each clip now. Do you agree that this is just the way it is for this version or did I miss something? Thank you in advance for your reply, Jamie
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, you always want your Sequence settings to match your media. If you Right-click on a clip and choose Properties, that will give you the frame size. Now make a Sequence based on that frame size and all should be fine. You might also try to drag a clip to the New Item icon (the little page icon at the bottom of them Project panel). This feature was added some time ago but it may not be in your version if it doesn't work.

You don't have to re-import. The Scale to Frame Size setting can simply be toggled on and off; just Right-click on the clip in the Timeline and look for the checkmark for that setting. Turn the checkmark off, and you're back to no scale settings!

@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
The scaling options do not take into account different pixel aspect ratios so you may need to manually adjust the scale property. If you're seeing blurry video, it's because you have both reducing the size of a video then resizing it up. These features are not meant to give you automatic control, it assumes you know the scale of the Timeline, the clip and the export. Have you tried just dropping in a clip and manually scaling it then exporting it? Is your export a larger frame size because that will cause scaling issues.
@cougar7375
@cougar7375 7 жыл бұрын
I think it had to do with the sequence I chose, which was a completely random one cuz I just opened the program to mess around. After creating a new project, and thus a new sequence, I imported another 720p video clip. It then asks to resize automatically to which I agree. It seems to have worked, getting rid of the edges. Is this a viable method of scaling?
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
The scaling that happens is not different or better than the Effects Control Panel. It's much better to have a clear understanding of what your export is first, then create a Sequence that size, then import your clips. But...if you primarily use 720p clips, then you should be creating a Timeline that size. Watch this tutorial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7mjjalou8XOqoE.html

Thank u for this video.....In your experience Which is best video editing software Avid,Fcp or Pro???
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 6 жыл бұрын
I think what's important to understand is that no matter what editing software you use, you're also going to use other Adobe applications and no other software integrates with Adobe programs like Premiere Pro. FCP and Avid can't give you that kind of integration (ie: Dynamic Link, Photoshop layers, Audition, etc.). If you've never used Avid, it's very different and a huge learning curve. The only people that use Avid are either long time users or editors that have to share projects via Avid's media management systems. FCP 7 is dead in the water. FCP X is useful for someone transitioning from iMove but again, it's not going to integrate like Premiere Pro. Plus, there are many specific things that FCP X does away with, like the idea of tracks and many film and broadcast editors need tracks in their workflow.

You're most likely exporting to a lower quality format than the original media. It's been so many years since CS6 so I can't remember but if you see any presets, then pick the best quality. If you're going out to KZfaq, pick KZfaq 1080p HD.

All looks OK as I'm editing, and when I render to put on KZfaq I will render at 1080P 29.97. Should I do set anything on PrPro while I'm editing the timeline before I render. Premiere Pro takes care of mixed frame rates no problem. For the slow motion clip, you might want to Right-click on the clip in the Project bin and choose Modify> Interpret Footage. If the original was 60 fps and you change it to 30 fps, you'll get the best quality. When you drop it in the Timeline, it will be twice as long because it's half the speed.

You can create a Preset Look in Lumetri and then save that as a preset. If you then select a bunch of clips in a bin and drag-and-drop the preset onto them it gets applied as a Master Clip effect to all of them.

Thanks for the video. I want to make a 1080 full HD video from 720p footage. Do i need to resize or "Default Scale to Frame Size" all footage or i should make 720 sequence and render to 1080p or i should make a 1080p sequence instead? Glad if u reply this. :D
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 8 жыл бұрын
+yans474 - All your suggestions would result in the same output, which is scaling the video 150%. The easiest is to output to 1080p from the original media size of 720p, but scaling that much will definitely make the video a little soft. You may get better results by putting the 720p Sequence into a 1080 Sequence and applying some sharpening. Have a look for my tutorial on sharpening and thanks for the support.

@@VideoRevealed This was really helpful now! I just got back from a trip, and see that in one of the my important days filming, I filmed literally everything in 720, 59fps... Talking, etc. But I want to have it into a 1080 sequence. Do I lose a lot of quality? I see that all my clips have to be scaled to 150%. I will check out your sharpening tutorial now. Also, quick question! What is the lowest you would slow down 59fps clip to? Thanks for all your great videos!

Great video by the way, but I still have a quick question (and I apologize if this is a super noob question, I am a super noob lol). Do either of these options effect the final resolution of the exported file? And by this I mean, if I say drop some 1080p footage into a timeline to start, then drop some 4K footage and choose scale to frame size to make it fit, when I render at 4K in the export settings, is it still using the 4K source file to render or is it essentially rendering the 4K to 1080 then upscaling to 4K again? Sorry for the complex question, just want to make sure I'm not loosing any of my 4K quality by using either of these options. Thanks!
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
The resolution of the Sequence is the most important setting so when you scale down 4k and drop it in HD, it's essentially HD even when you export at 4k Always work in the highest resolution you expect to export. If you think there's a possibility of exporting at 4k, then make a 4k Sequence. The HD will suffer as it will be scaled but only exporting at 4k, when you export at HD, it's fine.
@EthanWord

VideoRevealed alright thanks much for the reply that helps a lot. Very good to know, I was worried I would reduce the quality of the final export and appears I was doing so. But I won't make that mistake again, thanks again. Subbed.

I brought in a 720 video into a brand new time line and it was showing up small in the source monitor with lots of black showing so I manually scaled the video in the effects controls. I had to blow it up to 162 to fill the screen. I didn't notice any cropping happening. Does scaling it this way lose resolution?

For some weird reason, my set to frame size and set to frame size on premiere pro are not working. I'm not able to therefore readjust my clips. Please help.
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
First of all, you can always adjust the scale of any clip in the Effects Control Panel under the Motion settings. The Set To Frame Size is just a convenient way to adjust the scale of the clip automatically, so it fits in the frame. If your clip is larger than the frame, it will do the same thing as manually adjusting it in the Effects Control Panel. Now if both of these commands are missing from your version of Premiere Pro, then you may be running a very old version and you should update to the latest version. If the commands are available but don't change the scale of the clip, then the clip may already be small enough to fit in the frame. I'm just guessing here as I don't have enough information from you yet.

Hey there, do you know of any way to batch apply a specific scaling effect to clips in your project panel? I was able to save a preset with the scaling change applied, but Premiere doesn't support applying 'intrinsic effects (motion, opacity, speed)' to master clips and so I wasn't able to drag the preset onto the clip. Just wondeirng if you or anyone happened to know a work around, opposed to applying these changes every time you drag UHD footage into a 2K timeline for example. Many thanks! ( helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/master-clip-effects.html for reference)
@VideoRevealed

Unfortunately, there is no way to do what you want using Master Clip Effects (as you've already found out). The only option is to drag the clips into the Timeline then drag a preset to those clips or use an Adjustment Layer.

@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
Turn off Uniform Scale in Motion settings in the Effects Control Panel. Then change the Scale so the Height is 139.1 and the Width is 78.1. Just to be clear, a clip with these dimensions will not fit within an HD frame.

No, because the scale property is scale and you're asking for a dimension property. The dimension property only comes up with "synthetic" assets like a Color Matte. You're going to have to do the math like I did.

Hi Colin. Quick question, using Premiere Pro, lately I'm finding when I upload video to twitter I'm getting a thin border around my videos. Be it 1080 or 720. I often use Quicktime player to export to reduce file size, but don't think that's the reason. Any obvious ideas why it's happening? It never used to, it's a new thing. Could it be something to do with not pre-comping? Cheers
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 6 жыл бұрын
If uploading the file directly from Premiere Pro doesn't create the border, then I'd say QuickTime Player is doing something to create that problem. There really is no reason to compress twice, all the same compression properties that you're using in QuickTime Player are in Premiere Pro and Media Encoder.
@TradesDigital

Thanks Colin. Soon as I find the culprit I'll let you know. Good tip about not needing to compress twice.

When I right click on the clip, it only has scale to frame size. Where would I find set to frame size (that is the one that doesnt pixelate it right?) The clip I imported was a video I had made, but it is 1.87 gb so it shouldnt lose too much quality right? For some reason when I brought it in it was tiny in the frame. I am moving over from fcp to premiere, and never had this in fcp! If you could help I would be very grateful. Thanks!

@VideoRevealed 7 жыл бұрын
If you hover over the video in the Project Bin, a tooltip will pop up with the frame size. You can also Right-click and check properties. If the frame size is very small, then scaling it up by any means will pixelate it. The file size isn't always an indication of frame size; it could be a very long duration and very small frame size and poor compression and it would still be a large file size.

@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 6 жыл бұрын
That is caused by the Sequence settings being different from the export settings. If the frame size is different, then you'll get black bars. They should match. Also, if the black bars are only showing up when playing back in a browser, that maybe because you're not exporting at 16X9 aspect ratio and the browser player only plays 16X9 so it adds black bars.

It's not really about quality, it's more about making changes after you apply that setting. Like I said about ABC, use Scale to Framesize only if you need to manage the resources (putting a larger frame into a smaller sequence so it's easier to playback). Otherwise, just use Set to Framesize as a quick way to change the Scale property in the Effects Control Panel.

The quality of editing 4k in a 1080p Timeline vs editing in 4k and exporting to 1080p are exactly the same. If you're planning on panning and scanning the 4k, then do that in a 1080p Timeline.

The colorist should be grading the original media. The typical workflow is for you to send the final edit as an EDL or XML along with the original media. They grade that and output the final film or give you graded media, which you'd have to manually relink in Premiere Pro.
