THATS HOW YOU SET THE PINION PRELOAD! Thank you so much! I appreciate you and your video so much.

You can get away using an impact and it may last, but you risk brinelling the bearing race and eventually leading to bearing failure. This should be completed with a torque multiplier and dial torque wrench.

So you torque it after confirming the correct amount of preload? Correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t that throw off the measurement you just took?

About to replace my supercharger whine pinion bearing this weekend, Wish they rented the rolling torque tool at the auto parts stores lol

I don’t understand this method of setting preload. If the preload torque is reached before the nut reaches 250 lb.ft., what stops the bearing preload from increasing after the nut is torqued to 250? And, if it doesn’t increase, why not just torque the nut to 250 and be done with it?

He did it wrong..... once he reached the rotational torque of 12 INCH POUNDS... that should have been the end of the procedure!! All you are concerned about is that rotational torque value.... You are correct!!

@@edfrancis165 i agree with this also, everything I have researched agrees with this, some sources never even mentioned anything but ROTATIONAL torque for pinion setting

Can the front differential also have bad” preload ?

The pinion nut fell off my liberty. Can I 1, re-torque it and continue driving, 2 need to rebuild rear end, or 3 just reset depth of pinion and use new crush sleeve? I realize that everything except #1 will require removing the carrier. I'm pretty sure it was getting loose for a while but not till a couple days ago did it get real bad and I was hoping to get home before any issues but it fell off at an intersection so I was not at high speed. It was making progressively more noise on trailing throttle. Nothing looks broke inside diff.

I saw you cut the video and then restarted it you didn't show how you stopped the pinion gear from spinning. Did you put something inside the carrier to stop it while you torqued down?

Look again, he wedges a breaker bar from the pinion wrench to the leaf spring.

I noticed you were measuring the pinion bearing preload without the ring gear installed. Can I check the bearing preload the same way with a complete build diff? I replaced the pinion seal on a 9.25 axle and forgot to mark the nut...
@Donnythelatemodeltech
@Donnythelatemodeltech 3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to zip the yoke on loosely, then just torque the nut to spec and it should be fine, the preload on the bearing is really important when replacing the bearings, if you just did the yoke seal it should be fine.

@@Donnythelatemodeltech So just torque the nut to spec? A mechanic in my area who builds rear axles told me to do the preload measuring, that way making sure the nut is tight enough. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t question your knowledge. It’s just that I get different answers to the same question. I don’t want to run into a diff problem later just because I replaced a pinion seal. Thanks again.

@@MrZdvy no doubt if your rebuilding it, your going to need to preload, and set rotating rotating torque. "You can only crush the crush spacer once , you can try to preload and set Torque, but you run the risk of changing you pinion depth. Most of the time when just changing the pinion seal, just Torqueing the yoke and nut is all that's needed , because the pinion is usally set pretty firmly into the bearing and the preload is pretty close to where it needs to be. If you ever have had to remove a pinion , usally they need to be hammer out, usally. Ford mustangs just fall apart. Lol. So, your just going to to skip to the last torque step because the pinion should hold its spot , .... again this is only if the pinion hasn't moved and your not rebuilding it.
@Donnythelatemodeltech

I'm pretty sure if you torque it , or add just a few more pounds it will be fine, I've watch old techs rebuild diffs, with just touch and feel, like they're Jedi's and use the force ,lol. And everything is fine.

@@Donnythelatemodeltech Thanks. I will have to find a way to keep the yoke from rotating, I don’t have that tool in your video, obviously the parking brake won’t hold it. Would be easier on a lift🧐
