For over 10 Years this channel has been dedicated to teaching people world wide "The Art of Native American Flute Making". Now we are facing a collective battle to retain our rights as Native American Artists and the rights of State Recognized Tribes to maintain status as American Indians and to continue to be included in the language of the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.
Under the Act, an Indian is defined as a member of any federally or State recognized Indian Tribe, or an individual certified as an Indian artisan by an Indian Tribe.
In Section 309.2, the Act defines an "Indian tribe" as:
(1) Any Indian tribe, band, nation, Alaska Native village, or any organized group or community which is recognized as eligible for the special programs and services provided by the United States to Indians because of their status as Indians; or (2) Any Indian group that has been formally recognized as an Indian tribe by a State legislature or by a State commission or similar organization legislatively vested with State tribal recognition authority.
I recently attended a US senate hearing on changing the language of the Indian Arts and Crafts Act to include Native Hawaiians and one Chief out of Oklahoma spoke and wishes to add language that excludes thousands of Native people across the country because of their status as State Tribes. The largest Tribe in the United States is a State Recognized Tribe from North Carolina. I too stood up and spoke on behalf of every Native American person facing the deleterious effects that changing this law would have. Because of my willingness to stand up in the face of adversity, I am beginning to feel the repercussions.
At the time this video was recorded, it was brought to my attention that someone who only goes by SAM, wrote a blog piece about me. In this piece he calls me a 'Fake Indian' and tried to post information about my family using public records that he doesn't understand. This "Sam" hides behind his keyboard and knows nothing about me, my family or my history. Prior to this he wrote a hateful piece against the whole tribe of Lumbee.
This video was made to publicly call out the ones who are hiding while trying to destroy people, cultures and histories they themselves know nothing about. I'm here to set the record straight. You don't know ME. You don't know MY family and I will not cower to you.

I agree. Fight against the machine that wishes to assert its authoritative self on all of us. Do not bow down. It's bad enough that people got all over you for teaching others about the art of flute making. Full steam ahead Charlie.

As a descendent of Scandinavian people that admires indigenous American culture and a flute maker 😉 I appreciate your guidance. You're the voice of reason and I look forward to learning everything you have to teach so that I might pass on the knowledge for future generations.

Happy Birthday Charlie! 🎂Like another person said, 50 is not old! I turned 67 this month, and by the grace of God, I am still going strong. Thank you for the courage to bare your soul and share it with us. We are honored. Your history is very interesting and you own it. No one else can change that, no matter what they say, and it's not necessary for to defend yourself for our sakes. A bit of trivia: My grandfather was an only child, a "half-breed" Cherokee born in Duck Town TN in August, 1898. His Cherokee mother had died when he was just a child, then his Scottish? father was injured and died while working for the railroad. According to my grandfather, his Cherokee relatives refused to take him in because he was half-white, and his white relatives didn't want him either because he was half indian. He was temporarily housed in a cave, food and water was brought by some extended family members until they could find someone to take him in. Finally a distant relative in Ochopee, Florida agreed to take him. He was put in the baggage compartment on a railroad train with a baggage tag pinned to his jacket. Being a "half-breed" he wasn't allowed to ride in a passenger car with the whites. He grew up in Ochopee in the Everglades and had many Seminole friends. He said he was the first person to build a swamp buggy. (We have old black and white photos of him and his friends with his monster buggy with balloon tires). He gigged frogs, fished, hunted deer, and rode horses. He was a quiet man and a hard worker. Even though he had been persecuted, he was always proud of his Cherokee heritage. For whatever it is worth, I am proud of it too.

I'm 1/16 Cherokee. Where from I don't know for sure. I've been told out of Missouri and others say out of Oklahoma. My family never registered us but I sure wish they had. It feels like a part of me is missing in that way. But I know I'm some Cherokee and for now that's all that counts and I'm proud of it.

Good luck with your fight - although in my Scottish mind the need should never have arisen!!! It is terrible that a “coward” won’t even come forward and hear the truth from you! My son is engaged to an Indian girl here in Canada and I have heard so many horror stories about how her tribe was treated, it breaks my heart! Please take care of yourself!!! 🥰

Fight like Hell, Charlie! From the Treaty of Eaton to the Trail of Tears to the Indian schools that lasted into the 1990's, Native tribes have been decimated, massacred, and forced into assimilation. Enough is enough. Don't just stand up, RISE up! And if you're ever in Kentucky, can ya help me out with my flutes? Still can't get the sound hole right😊! From a descendant of the very first white Scotch Irish Appalachians that choose to live with the Shawnee a hundred years before Daniel Boone rather than the Protestant, stay strong. My family owes those native families more than I can repay.

I've only recently started watching your videos Charlie. When I saw the title of this one I thought it only fair to hear what you have to say. What I hear & what I see is a man who speaks sincerely & whose words come truly from the heart . It's disappointing when some folks make a hobby out of trying to derail others at every turn. However, it's not worth letting them live rent free in your head. Your talent & your ability at making & playing fine flutes is truly a gift to the world. I don't know how spiritual you are but I feel it's a great part of your spiritual fulfilment. It's your growth that matters, not their stagnation. Incidentally, I understand that your birthday is the day before mine, although I have quite a few more years on you. So Happy Birthday to us. I feel compelled to make a PVC flute. If I make a good job I'll let you know. Ciao from the UK. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Hey, thank you so much for the birthday wishes and your great consideration of my psyche is appreciated! Happy upcoming birthday also! I will be 51 in a couple days! As far as giving these people free rent in my head, my wife says the same thing... the only thing different that I believe is... one day I will collect all of the past due rent and interest and put them in jail! And then give all the rent away to the less fortunate! 😊

Happy Belated Birthday! Love the Cherokee people. I get to work with the Eastern Band in western, NC often. My wife is a direct descendant of William Holland Thomas who was adopted by the Cherokee after his father drown. He went on to serve in the civil war with the Cherokee. He is recognized in the museum at Cherokee but her family have never wanted to try and claim anything. Lots of respect for your people.

Much Respect Charlie. I had to track down my flute making knowledge way before the Internet. I am self taught but since the Internet came along I’ve watched many videos and purchased your book and I truly enjoy watching your videos and utilizing your book. my family didn’t want anyone to know we had Indian blood because of what happened to the Cherokee and we lost our language and many traditions when I lost my grandparents. So Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and traditions

Happy Birthday!!! I really wish I knew more about my Cherokee and Blackfoot ancestry. I'm fortunate to remember my great grandmother who was full Cherokee and my grandmother being half. But I never gave it much thought back then, because I was to young. Now I wish I had. They lived in Hallie Kentucky. My great great grandparents were both born there in 1886 and 1890 and same with my great grandparents and my grandmother. My grandmother married my grandfather who was from Ohio and they moved to Indiana. But as a young child, I spent many summer vacations in Kentucky with that side of the family. Unfortunately I never knew my great grandfather. He passed away pretty young from complications of a coal mine accident and black lung.

Thank you for sharing this. It sounds very complex but is very informative. Is there anything non-native people can do to help support your efforts with the Indian Arts and Crafts Act? Up here in NY, one local tribe, the Montauketts are fighting for state recognition which I've read a bit about as I try to stay informed. About the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, I had heard of it years ago and when visiting a local gift shop at a nature preserve, they made sure to have items for sale properly labeled. May you prevail in your efforts without too many 'sams' trying to get in the way. And happy birthday wishes to you, Charlie. I'm almost a decade older, so you're young. Thank you for the beautiful flute making. I'm enjoying the googol very much and the amp works great.

I am always in support of Naive Americans rights and autonomy. That being said, I think its important to point out that its a bad look (and hypocracy) when the Cherokee Nation asks to be treated with the humanity we all deserve then commits one of the most horrendoues acts of genocidal identiy theft in the history of the U.S. To expell people form a tribe because of the color of their skin will forever be a stain on that nation. Race is a construct. That is a fact. Racists believe you can quantify a person and can judge and catagorize people based on physical measurments, head and brain size, skin and eye color. Those are merely minisculue biological markers that are present in all of us whether in dominant expression or recessive. Race exist only as a construction to distinguish our history, culture and our identities. So when the Cherokee Nation recently stripped citizenship from a majority of African-Americans who descended from slaves of wealthy Cherokee Indians before the Civil War, I was sickened to my core. "Some well-to-do Native Americans also owned slaves. In fact, the late Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller wrote in her autobiography that, quote, "The truth is that the practice of slavery will forever cast a shadow on the great Cherokee Nation," unquote. To banish a group of people who have identified as cherokee both culturally, historically, and individual, was to strip them of thier identities. Unconscionable.

A timely, poignant video, Charlie. Sadly, given the current political temperature's tenuous grasp upon reality, had you instead chosen to don a mumu, put a little rouge on your cheeks, put your hair up in ponytails, and "identified" as 16 years old, you would be bandied about as the pinnacle of human achievement, "stunning and brave", and would most likely have tampon and beer sponsorships fighting over your endorsements. As it is, by simply living a life based in reality and by being what you have always been, you are labeled a pariah. It's a sad state of affairs when the man speaking logic and truth is seen as a radical. By that logic, Charlie, please continue to be your "radical" self. Buying into their games only serves to validate and propagate their lies. Nice to see you posting again. ❤
