In this video I will show you how to adjust the timing. This included adjusting the hook and the needle height. This video ended up being a lot longer than I had anticipated. However, I wanted to show the complete steps I go through when setting the timing, which includes greasing and oiling and cleaning out the bobbin area.

For those that can't get the 3 set screws off the gear, or the gear wont rotate because the set screws deformed the shaft too much: you can still fix the timing yourself. Take all the screws off the bottom of the machine, remove the base cover. Slide the belt off its gear, set the timing as described in this video. Try not to rotate the shaft and slide the belt back onto the gear. Way easier than bending allen wrenches

Thanks for mentioning all the spots that need oil. I have always oiled the metal to metal in the past, but, the recent video I saw said to oil the felt and did not mention the grease or other parts to oil. You have made my day. Now I have to take it apart and oil the rest, and grease it when I receive the grease. Your video has made me happy now that I do not have to spend $$$$$ on having it serviced. May God bless you for taking your time to bless others.

You cover the top timing as well while others don't. That helped me salvage my 4411 that a repair man said needed parts and was a write off. Now it's working on a 4 width zig zag which is all I need - I dont have your patience to get it not to skip the odd stitch on 6 but greased and oiled like you showed, it' sounds great and is running sweet as a nut again. Thank you so very much indeed Mr Kevin the machine saver.

Your video helped me get a 4452 going that I just purchased at Goodwill for $19.99. The upper thread kept getting caught in the bobbin area. Those two screws were loose so I followed your instructions and held that piece up and out when I tightened the screws and now it works perfectly. Probably was the reason the old owner got rid of it. Thank you Kevin.

Thank you so much for making this video, my singer 4423 had jammed, I followed all the steps and I have finally managed to fix it. I had to stop every step to get all the tools. I have learned a lot, it took me a month to fix it but I finally did it. When I was stitching checking if it timed, I wasn't closing the bottom cover, the thread was getting wrapped around the gears, and it was making a very loud sound. I couldn't see it because it going right under the felt between the gears. So now I understood why Kevin was closing the bottom cover and opening it up to adjust it. So follow every step in this video and you will go no wrong.

Sewed some canvas for corn bags for a corn hole game...machine nested up under bobbin plate a few times..still sewed. I put it away. Hello Kevin, Thanks very much for this very helpful video! I have a Singer heavy duty 4423 and it has never had a problem in it's 8 year life. I love it! However, it went dead head on me (hand wheel wouldn't turn, everything was locked up). In all those 8 years I never had it serviced so that was why I'm sure! I watched this and lots of your other videos and did everything you showed in them: i opened up the whole machine, got out all the lint, oiled and greased every moving part, and also loosened some of the screws to unlock the place were it had seized. I don't actually know where that was, but it got to working again, and when I put everything back together, everything retightened, it turned and worked except there was no stitch! That was when I watched this video again and adjusted the timing with the hook and needle, just like you said. I also watched your other post on adjusting the tensions on top and bottom, and did that too. Now I have the machine stitching ALMOST perfectly, but only straight stitch and only in the middle or far left position of the needle. Problems are, even as good as it gets there will be one or two missed stitches every 10-20 inches or so. Also it is cranky about the needles I use (it doesn't like a brand new one identical to the one it does like), and it refuses to do a zigzag stitch no matter what, eitehr doing a terrible straight stitch in place of it, or skipping so many stitches that it looks like a dying heartbeat! It will not stitch at all in the far right position. I don't see any problems inside (opened it up and looked thoroughly at it again). I have worked and worked at it (desperate to use it again!) but maybe this is just a problem with a diy-er tinkering so much with such a delicate machine! Can you give me any ideas? I'm pretty stuck and have now invested a lot of time into it! I could replace the entire bobbin case to see if the bobbin case is ruined in some way that I can't see. Anyway, I'd take a video of it or pics if that helped. Thanks for your consideration!
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 2 жыл бұрын
All I do is place the machine in the widest zigzag and rotate the hook to see that it catches the thread on both the right and left. You may need to adjust the needle height at this point. These adjustments are almost always very slight. A tiny movement at this point cab make all the difference.
@rachelbeeman
@rachelbeeman 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinsews Ok. I'll keep trying. I did set it on the widest zigzag the last time I adjusted the timing: and the hook was coming right above the needle's eye, just like it seems like it should. I guess I could buy a gauge and try to do it the way the repair manual specifies? If I were to adjust the needle height, what would I be looking for? I did loosen it but I didn't quite understand what height exactly it should be, if the needle eye is already going below the hook when they meet.
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 2 жыл бұрын
@@rachelbeeman You will notice the needle height issue when the needle swings to the left side. That is when you may need to make a very slight adjustment to the needle height to allow the hook to catch the thread. It is a balancing issue for sure because it has to be almost perfect to allow both sides to catch the thread with every size needle the machine supports. And yes, buying a gauge would be very helpful.

Lol I saw the Dritz stuff in the background ...was a tool and die maker there, job ran out when they ran-off to Malaysia with the manufacturing, they only package the stuff here in the USA now. LOL when I go into walmart I make it a point to not buy any of their stuff now. It would be nice if Singer would re-polish their name and get their butts out of china... I would gladly pay another 150 bucks more above the current price for a heavy model series, knowing that Americans were keep their jobs. Great tutorial on that Singer!

I really learned a lot on how to fix the Timing on a Singer Classic. The important thing is that after the major areas are adjusted, there likely will be more mini adjustments. So, it was perfect to have the mini adjustments and to checking with a zig-zag, and a straight stitch at the end.

Good & confounding grief! My Janome built (90’s) Kenmore [which I’m onlyONLYonly-just learning to use] likely has multipleMULTIPLEmultiple shenanigans. The ‘hook’ is capturing but not releasing the thread. Additionally, it was the looping/bird’s nesting bobbin threads + hopping & bopping in concert, rocking the casing. I’ve adjusted tension here to yon and I just don’t yet know what the complete hey I’ve yet to well learn! Aaaaarrrrrgh. I’m going to look into ‘timing’. While ThisTHISThis wonderful offering is today a bit over my head I’m learning MoreMOREMore each day. I’ll be studying so thank you SO much Kevin! ~ Shannan

Thank you for this video! After loosening the 3 Allen screws on the bottom my bobbin will only move freely about 45 degrees back and forth, any idea what could be jamming it? All 3 screws are lose, there is plenty of play within the 45 degrees...

Great video, really detailed and helpful. We have a problem with the button for the drop feed dogs, after using it the feed dogs would no longer come up to regular sewing position. My husband was able to toggle the switch under the machine to make the feed dogs return to regular sewing position, but something is broken, any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

Hi Kevin. Thank you for your video. I have done all the adjustments for sorting the timing and when I look at it the hook catches the thread easily on both sides of the needle adjustment. But when I put everything back together and sew a zigzag it sews straight stitches but misses loads. Same with straight stitch it still misses most of the stitches, but looks ok when I take it all apart. Please help
@kevinsews
@kevinsews 2 жыл бұрын
You have to be careful when you tighten the bolts. If this isn't the issue then your timing may still be a bit off because the needle thread will be coming down straight off the needle once you've everything back together. You will just have to try it again until you get it down.

Thank you so much for this video. I have 3 Singer HD machines, the classic and 2 HD 6800 C's ( I was sent 2 machines when I ordered only 1). My bottom stitches on my HD Classic (Mechanical) were off. I cleaned, changed the needle and thread, but it was still off. I watched your video adjusted my tension and set my bobbin holder back in place and tightened the screws on the needle plate. I think using the walking foot and putting my machine down lower (adjustable table) "shook" things up too much. Stitches good now.

Sometimes it takes loosing the gear and rotating the bobbin one tooth over if they don't allow for completely free movement.

@China Muff hello i managed to get them out! You have to use a stronger stainless allen key then lean towards the left and downward so it sounds like it snaps a bit (not really) but its easy to take out from there

Thank you Could you by chance show the needle bar clap you adjust? In the manual there’s an upper one that my machine doesn’t seem to have. I’ve gotten it working though more or less, but have noticed since correcting the timing, my tension wheel has to be substantially higher. Before I’d regularly use it around 5, and. Im having to use it almost fully maxed out around 7/8. Is there a way to internally adjust the tensioning?

Hey Kevin!this is such a well explained video! I just changed the timing and it loops when I turn the wheel and catches both stitches for the zig zag but when I sew it only catches the straight stitch... and not the other right stitch! I'm assuming it's still a timing issue?
