This works great, I actually use my already existing Australian mobile (cell for the yanks) and added that to my Skype account, the only downside to it is I have to maintain the account with the Australian mobile provider which costs me about $9AUD/3 months. I didn't now about creating a new number so I'll sort that out and drop the Aussie phone provider charge. Thanks Gio!

Great information and very useful for those of us planning on making the move. I was considering going the MagicJack route, and porting my current number over. The Skype option looks like it may be a more viable means, as MJ has been known to have some banking institutions identify those numbers as VPN based, and shut down account activities, as SMS traffic may not work. I am curious if there are some recommended phones for either a secondary Philippine phone, or perhaps the dual-SIM/e-SIM options? I have seen some content providers mention a few phones aren't recommended, or don't do well over there. Stay safe and take care. I have an Arizona number. When dialed by friends of mine living in Az, it forwards to me here in Japan. The app I use is (now--text). Reverse those two words, and make two words as one .......... Note: The reason I must "encrypt" the name is that KZfaq will delete the post if I post the name of the app. Personally, I love the app. It's free. However I pay an extra $5 a year to allow codes to be sent on the app. I love these free apps that allow free calls.

I just set up a US number in Skype from Poland where I relocated to. My US bank will not text verification codes to that number. It says that the # may not be registered to my name or it is a VOIP number. Skype (Apple Store) charge me in Polish currency for that number from my Polish credit card. No idea if that has anything to do with it. Is this what currently happened and Skype numbers don't work any more for verifications, or I have messed something up?

The 2-factor-authentication codes from banks are sent using the sort-code format. The reason Google Fi and most other free voice and texting devices do not work for bank 2FA is because they use VOIP (voice over internet protocol) instead of the the telephone network - and VOIP does not support the short-code format.

I used Google voice when I was in the Philippines. It worked great for all personal calls but not for banking at all. I think I will combine it with Skype next time. Good advice tks.

I tried both Skype and Magicjack....Charles Schwab does not work with them. It is reasons like this that I kept my American number with Google Fi, which does work with CS. My cost for that is around $25 USD/month.

Im using skype to receive calls and call othere local mobile/landline numbers here in Australia, I've been using Skype for the last 3 year's with no issues but recently calling other people with my local skype number, my caller id displays as Florida US on others, which results in not taking the call as they might think it could be scam. Also I'm getting alot of calls accusing of calling them which I've never called. Tried to get help though skype but unsuccessful. I think my skype number has been hacked. I have been using Google Voice in th US for many years to get codes for many banks, credit unions, brokerages, credit card companies, etc. Works for me. However, when first setting up an account at a new institution, sometimes they will want to verify your identity with a mobile # by contacting your mobile carrier. That will not work with a VOIP #. So then, I'm usually allowed to verify my identity by using another method (maybe uploading some document). But then, even institutions that I had to do this with, once I had the account opened and verified, I was still able to use my Google Voice # to receive 2FA codes.

Gio, my concern is transferring money from my US credit union to Philippines. Got the Schwab Debit Card. Got the Wise account. All good. Next step, can you review step by step process of transferring cash from my US credit Union to a Philippines bank. Which banks are best. I do direct ACH transfer from my bank to pay my CC bills. I assume it's the same to transfer funds from my US to a Philippines bank. My greatest nightmare is having tens of thousands of dollars in the US but not a piso in RP due to some SNAFU. I like these nuts and bolts type of stuff. Also, again, recommend you try that app I said before. It begins with *text* and ends with *now* in the name -- just an amazing free app. I use it for my iPhone all the time. Had a Skype number a few years ago. It cost me $20, but this was before M$ took over Skype and ruined it.
