www.eyesonthesky.com Light trespass is something we occasionally must deal with if we do not observe at a dark sky site. In this video, Dave explains how to set up a simple light-block using a heavy-duty tarp, a few stakes, some cord and two poles. This can enhance astronomy observing, and is a quick and eay set up / tear down too. See what's up in the night sky every week with "Eyes on the Sky" videos, astronomy made easy.

Brilliant! I’m a too old female to actually make this happen so I would no longer assaulted by the constant nightly blast of the asshat neighbor’s bright party lights (Christmas tree type) strung up over their ratty metal gazebo accompanied by an LED bright circular light that sends unwanted light into my kitchen and outdoor space. I have grown to despise them for ruining the peace of dark night sky. If only...

That's true Chris - logic, facts and even several simple polite requests just don't get anywhere when easily-scared people think they will get robbed ( and I live in a town with virtually zero crime, no less). Ah well... here's my solution to that at least - I hope it helps others with a similar issue.

Even though we have ordinance laws to prevent light trespass, it seems that you can't call the cops to fine the people who do this, you have to go through a court process, costing you even more misery, time and money. I have thought about installing mirrors (like the bathroom mirrors you can put on the back of a door) at the top of my fence to reflect the light back at them!

I read about someone using Mylar, a shiny reflective fabric to build a kind of mirrored wall ( like a billboard). I live in a neighborhood where older folks are afraid of property crime ( or just fearful), so I’m a bit empathetic, but my front yard is lit up like a prison yard :(

Yup I feel you pain I had one spot that I could hide from the light in my yard and I knew that as soon as the house across the street finished it's foreclosure it would be gone. Just didn't want it to end well after 4 years of nobody home people moved in last year and installed the brightest sensor lights that go off if I move in my own yard. I have said things multiple times but but they are simple and keep telling me they can't adjust them. Crappy

I feel you bud. I've been dealing with 3 light nuisance neighbors. now my neighbor's motion sensor keeps triggering all the way up to my sidewalk. he said he would tilt light downward to stop the spillage off my property and out of my eyes. it doesn't take rocket science to focus lighting at night. he pretend he focused in broad daylight. still no progress going to day 3 now. I will send him one more email and offer to focus the light myself at night which will take only seconds. then I will revert to a green tarp hopefully it blocks my motion. last week his porch lights were bombarding my windows and property. sent him pictures too. a hard core light nuisance has no conscious.

This can absolutely be scaled down - I just happened to have the large tarp, but a smaller one can be used. Just cut shorter lengths of the conduit pipe and shorter paracord lengths.

I have a dusk to dawn neighborhood light across the street. It causes even more midges than usual by reflecting onto white siding. My ideas: BB gun?, throw stones? Attach light on it to trick it? Shine light on it to trick it. It’s 20’ tall. Now your idea. I may rig something to throw over it just at night. Thanks for idea!

Neighbor's won't turn off lights, hindering your observing? No problem... a simple tarp, some poles and a bit of paracord can create a temporary and easily stored light block to make for more productive observing sessions. Setting up a tarp as a light block for light trespass

Glad that worked out for you; the neighbor behind my house is very accommodating in that respect as well. All I have to do is ask and they'll turn theirs off. But the view from my backyard is quite limited, unfortunately. So I'm stuck with having to put up the tarp in the front due to the "always on" light.

Some townships have light trespass laws, you may want to look into it, or ask your town council to enact light trespass regulations, more people are annoyed by those afraid of the Boogie man then people realize. Years ago people weren't obsessed with "security lights" esp since lights really do not do anything to make one secure, they only light the way for would-be home invaders, though it should be noted that MOST home burglaries and invasions take place during the day. Its lightbulb manufacturers and motion detector manufacturers who have brainwashed some people into believing bright lights at night will keep them safe. Nope if anything a burglar is more afraid of a darkened property then a well lit one.

If it were as simple as making sure the bulb didn't work, I don't need a rifle for that. I could walk over, pop the top and take the bulb out. But long-term, those aren't positive/good solutions. So this is a workable interim solution until I can either convince them (amicably) otherwise. I do still live next door to them.

Eyes on the Sky I like your videos David, thanks. I just wanted to say that I too have neighbors with annoying lights and the only thing that lets me get away from them are a deck privacy fence and positioning between house and garage. Which means I never get to look at the southeast. :(

modbnet Thank you, and I feel your pain. Look into your local lighting ordinances. I'm still working on how I can get my neighbor to change their lights; I'm having our village administrator come out sometime soon to look at the issue. I don't need them to change their whole fixture; just the bulb to a "silver crown" style version. I even offered to buy them FOR them, and replace them at MY expense when they burn out. They used it for

The nursing home next door just added even more LED lights that are blinding us. Our backyard is unusable and the wood blinds that we installed in our sunroom create bright stripes on the walls. We were told, “too bad” And so, we are going to buy several of those shiny tarps and run them down the property line. Not sure how this will end.

Hi Tom - I do plan to try to add some more telescope reviews. In fact, I bought one around Christmas specifically with the intention of reviewing it, but it's really only cleared up here in the past few weeks, and I haven't had many opportunities to do any observing with it yet. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more of those recorded and posted.

I have flood lights shining across the road into my living room and bedroom. They are intrusive. I want to be able to look outside without being blinded. A tarp also keeps me from looking out on my property. Now I’m looking at a tarp. Nope. Won’t work for me.

Sounds more like an issue to being up to a local government to see if someone can help you. There may be an existing ordinance that might be on your side, though it can often take a lot of time to fix things that way. Have you tried talking to whomever owns the lights to ask if they might aim them down instead of at your house?

Most counties and towns have ordinances for "light trespass". If you can prove and document that their light is infringing on your personal space, the county should be responsible for making them do something about it. A cone over their light to just illuminate their property might be an option. Then there's the drive-by with a shotgun..... to the light of course.
@Eyesonthesky
@Eyesonthesky 3 жыл бұрын
I advised the town, multiple times. They did absolutely nothing, and furthermore, said there was nothing they could do. Fortunately I have moved since I made this video, to an area with much darker skies and much more forward thinking residents.

My county has ordinances regarding nuisance lighting but refuses to enforce them. A local deputy sheriff wrote a ticket to my neighbors lights, it was sent to the county attorney for review and he denied it. I was told by the County attorney they were too busy to deal with such petty complaints. So…. The moral of my story is don’t always count on local authorities to enforce the ordinances and deal with the problem by yourself.

David, It’s kind of funny in a way because I really enjoy your videos and tell other people about them. But when I look at your videos I get a little sad because I live in a condo complex and the “orange” light pollution is terrible. When I view your videos, I look back and say “Look Hun. Why can't it be this easy for me to look at the sky?” But………You too? :-P We are human beings and all we want to do is simply look up at the infinite cosmos :-) Strange!
@Eyesonthesky
@Eyesonthesky 10 жыл бұрын
Christopher, yes, I deal with light pollution and light trespass too. The graphics I use seem to make it simple, and I always try to focus on objects that most people can see, even from badly light polluted areas. But even using a tarp (or a few) or perhaps a long hooded sweatshirt - heck, even a dark towel over your head - can help reduce stray light and allow your eyes to become better adjusted for seeing fainter objects. It's all about managing the conditions we are presented as best we can - I just shared one way to do that here. Hopefully it will help others be able to see a bit more of the infinite cosmos over our heads. :-)

Indeed it's a little frustrating. I'm not asking them to turn off their lights entirely, just use a bulb that doesn't shine up into my daughter's bedroom or across my yard - and I'll even provide the bulb to them. Oh well... some people don't think about the impact of their actions on others - even when you tell them about that impact.

As satisfying as it may be to think those kinds of thoughts, I do want to work towards more productive solutions to the problem. So this is a temporary fix, and I'll keep working with them and my local political officials to find a more sensible long-term solution. They already said there was no point for them changing their bulb since the streetlight further away was so terrible and bright. But I got that changed... now it's their turn. It will take time though. That's okay. I still have to live next to them, so patience, persistence and politeness are all required.

Your neighbors probably think you're devaluating their property since that ugly tarp is a eyesore.. Lucky you don't live here..The cops would have been called..You see the only thing allowed in your front yard here is lawn furniture. NIMBYs at their very best. As far as observation go outside the city limits where its much darker..Might be even safer since some of your fine neighbors might think you're a peeking tom..
@Eyesonthesky
@Eyesonthesky 10 жыл бұрын
If they did call the cops? I'd just point out that their light is the nuisance under the existing light code, and the tarp is only a temporary structure in the yard. Besides, I'd let the cop know what I'm doing with it, and they'd let me go about my observing. Helps to have a pretty good rapport with the police in town....
