For months it was the talk of St. John’s, ultra-bright security lights that a property owner put up and refused to take down. Neighbours rallied, petitioned, and protested, but the city was powerless to turn the lights off. Zach Goudie shows us the view from a neighbour’s window and looks at the big picture of light pollution.

I have a different theory. The guy easily has 100k worth of copper distilling equipment in that little shed, not to mention the actual liquor. Maybe a proper door would be a better investment than an outrageously strong light. Unless of course, he has really good fire/vandalism insurance, then obstinately enraging your entire community might be a good idea....but that's none of my business......

Vancouver may have regulations, but Surrey definitely doesn't. New "houses" built in older neighbourhoods have perimeter lights that outshine anything, including the street lights. Some have high lumen lights on the building, the fencing around the entire property such that inside adjacent hoses lighting isn't needed. Light pollution in cities, especially urban areas, is hazardous to human and wildlife.

I find it interesting that they refer to cities doing well with light pollution regulation. I think most of the lights that are used are not really needed at night. The population that operates at night is way smaller, they do not really move around much, and operate in a much smaller area of cities in general. When I worked most of my life at night, I always preferred areas with less light. Mostly because people can you know use lights as they are needed and frankly I really liked gazing at the stars. I think a lot of the newer lighting could be dimmed or even turned off with smart technologies to maintain lighting where people need it, instead of keeping them on everywhere all night, every night. Places like highways might be an exception for speed of travel, but neighbourhood lights are not really that necessary. It would save power consumption, and maybe even reduce demand. Besides the stars are way nicer to look at than the yellow or orange haze created by that lighting.
@cdhewko

Actually I wonder how much energy we could save if we were smarter with that stuff in general. Would it help us reach energy consumption targets if we were you know smarter with how we use our energy. What do you think?

Property management companies where the power bills are all under one sheet, not broken down to a building or floor, so that tenants are billed for it, instead all get averaged for it. Till somebody actually complains about the light pollution to the company social media nothing will be done.

Probably being an annoying ahole is all. But if there is no light ordinance I would have gone, gotten a 5W green laser, put it on a tripod, and methodically burnt each LED out in those fixtures, because "it is just light, no limit on it" as defense.

@@Ynalaw Yes, but that then is you interfering with the property, the laser is not, as you are merely "shining light" onto the property, and if he is legally allowed so are you. Though if not laser then a call to rent a 20kW Xenon short arc searchlight, aimed at the fixture till it catches fire, will also work, as after all they did not have a max light amplitude, and those lights are often rented out, though with a caveat not to aim them at property within 100m as they might burn it from the intensity of the light beam. Does need to have it's own 50kVA generator with it, and a good amount of cooling water as well to keep it running.

As above he wants to buy the neighbouring lots, bulldoze down and build a set of condos to flip them. But not enough land, so the bright lights to make the neighbours move out and sell cheap. Wonder if anybody has reported him to the IRS for tax fraud anon yet, as those sort of investigations can go back decades, and they will want payment now, argue later on.

there is a very simple solution its called put up some curtains and close them. they are called shades for a reason as they block out the light and if you get a good set it will not be a problem. if this is what people have to complain about then they should get a life. I live on a street where the city light post is right outside the house and it shines in my bedroom window and i put up a thin blanket to block out the light from outside so i do not have that problem anymore. so learn from my solution as you have a similar problem and stop complaining about what happens on someone else's property as those lights are a security feature that people use so they can see who is coming on their property and to deter criminals who would rob their home.

Those lights he was using were extremely excessively bright . If they were just lighting up his property and not other people's property and into other peoples home it wouldnt be an issue . Intensely bright lights pointed directly at your neighbours, with no history of such intense lighting having been installed ... and, if your neighbours are bothered by the lights, why not be courteous and turn them off? Why are there no curtains on the windows inside that house? Do exhibitionists live there or something? That said, there isn't a reason for lights like that to be on 24/7 ... Did you not watch the beginning? There ARE blinds. Additionally, the lights were on 24 hours a day. If the blinds have to be used all day and all night, the people would be living in constant darkness and no ventilation in warmer weather. It also means that entering and leaving your house you're blinded and could have retina damage. Maybe you could live your whole life like that, most people can't.
