Today I setup and configured a centralized Active Directory server for the Cybersecurity Homelab Project. To get more detail about Active Directory, all of the resources I used, and how AD relates to the homelab, read more here: cybercademy.org/setting-up-an...

Grant, love your videos. Very inspiring and informative. Could you also make a video series sorta like behind the scenes where you show the process of configuring AD on Windows server 2016? Just raw commentary with footage of the screen where you are configuring the server. You can explain your thought process and why are certain things done in that way. I know you have a lot of projects going on but this can be something unedited just posted for people who just want to supplement your HomeLab Project series with a little more info. Thank you for your time brother.

When you install Active Directory Domain Services, it is going to install DNS as part of the domain controller (by default) there's not need to configure your primary zone for your domain it is going to be there automatically, unless you want to have another zone you can then create the zone, also as best practice it is better to have your DHCP server on a separate VM. Additionally if you want your VMs to have internet connectivity without directly exposing the network, you can set up another windows server VM with RRAS role installed which you can then configure to do NAT between your private network and your public network (homework) if your hyper visor allows you to have public virtual switches.

I use virtualbox on a HP thin client connected to my cisco lab via vlans and windows server 2019. Cheap man's lab server. runs AD, DNS, Dhcp, RDP like a champ and is dual monitor.

Hey! Just a suggestion. Proxmox is a free Linux distro. It is a hypervisor. I think it would suit your needs a bit better than Ubuntu and VM Ware. Great video also
@collinsinfosec
@collinsinfosec 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Casey! Yes for sure a great recommendation. Promox is a great hypervisor. But for me it was a matter of limited RAM (I think the recommended minimum is 16GB) and as I hinted at in the video, I want to get started on the network security components.

Okay, well, how practical will be the whole setup. If I remember, 3 servers, 3 workstations and 2 firewalls will be there in the lab. What are you using, a supercomputer? 😂 I mean seriously, what is the specification of your rig. And what will be a minimum requirement if I feel like replicating it, maybe at a lower level.

These have to be the most useless cyber security videos I have ever seen. Most of the videos in these channels center around basic stuff like Linux commands or introduction to python that don't even need the "cyber security" tag in the title. Clearly this guy is milking the traction of the word but doesn't compare to other channels that actually go more technical. Infosec is also a pretty large sub domain. None of the important aspects, like blue team, red team, pen testing, web, reverse engineering, exploit development, cryptography, stenography and more are talked here. Not even bug bounties are discussed. These videos more or less give you a false impression that you actually did learn something, when you in fact didn't. Pass.
@collinsinfosec
@collinsinfosec 4 жыл бұрын
You got some really valid points here Tran! Totally see where you are coming from. Like you said. There are several domains of cyber! I think we all have our own little journey and for me I am sharing it with others! Try to help maybe someone who is just starting out with the whole idea of what "cybersecurity" is and how to get started.
