As experiment I've run duplex hives as two colonies. They're side by side 4 over 4. 8 deep frames can support a colony. They make honey too. They share supers and dont fight. Might have to do all my hives that way because it works. At first it was nucs that got too big too quickly but after the success I've been trying it more. It makes a lot of things easier for an old beek.

did they make more honey than two 8frames set apart? did they overwinter or they killed one queen?

I was wondering 6 frame as well until i saw 2 10 frame excluders fit just right on his standard pallets.The less odd sized stuff, the more efficient your operation.

One question do the nucs ever swarm even though they have room for nectar up top?
@apiniventures28206 жыл бұрын
The yellow field is Canola. In the prairies, can have thousands of acres of it across entire districts. A very significant honey crop producing flower. Question on the multi-queens. Have you ever double queened the main colonies? Results? Difficult to do and manage at the colony numbers you are running now. Just wondering if you experimented with it in the early years when the operation was smaller and what your general experience and thoughts are on such.
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog6 жыл бұрын
Apini Ventures Earlier this year I ran double colonies to boost small and take a split. Simply put, if I were to leave them stacked as a double queen unit, I’d need to stack them sky high

Do you have trouble with the bees picking the stronger Queen and killing other or even others very often? I tried it over each other couple times and they always kill top Queen ,this is way better their working together better but does this happen still alot ?

Three different colonies. How do you prevent zqrqr from giving each other zqrqr when you put the main grill and place the honeycombs. Do you use perfume, fragrance, etc. beforehand

Neat little system of maximizing the use of nucs. I wonder, do you ever notice any “drifting”? I mean, does it appear that the bees will always go back down into the nuc they started in or do they move to another colony?
@CrossroadToCountry4 жыл бұрын
Decatur Ridge Bees they will share with no problems. All they care about is that there is a laying queen. As long as any of the 3 nucs below have a laying queen, they consider it home.

Oh boy, am I glad you made this video. I was interested when you were combining hives over a queen excluder to equalise your hives earlier this season. I have been considering combining my 2 hives with a queen excluder in an attempt to save a struggling hive and give my strong hive more room because they are getting crowded as they continue to expand through our mild Western Australian winter. Is it a bad idea to combine a strong and a weak (but queen right) hive in the winter time? Will they fight, or will they live harmoniously together for the next few months? I've asked a few local beekeepers, but nobody I know seems to have tried this.
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog6 жыл бұрын
Michael Robinson I only know my winter, No, combine them only when they can actively brood, Forage and grow
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog6 жыл бұрын
Michael Robinson If done during the winter, they will all move up to and abandon the bottom regardless the situation
@michaelrobinson13416 жыл бұрын
a Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog thanks for replying. One hive is maintaining a modest brood nest, foraging and growing at a modest rate (our winter is rather mild). The other seems to have shut down. It seems like that's not a solid "No", but a bit of a risk for my one good hive. Thanks again.
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog6 жыл бұрын
Michael Robinson Oh, your winter sounds different than mine. 2 trains of thought for you to consider. I’ll put the weak over the strong to promote the upward growth of the colony to boost the weak. I’ll do this during spring. The other way to think of it is to protect the strong by placing it over the weak which will only allow extra resource down from the strong if warranted
@michaelrobinson13416 жыл бұрын
a Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog OK thanks. You've given lots to think about. I'll make a decision next inspection.

Do you have any tips on handling and processing this canola honey? A lot of our canola honey crystallizes in the comb. Even if we havest before 50% capped It normally smells like stink socks and most is sold as baking honey. Very low prices. I would suspect we are doing something wrong James
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog6 жыл бұрын
Cape Bee That doesn’t sound at all like canola honey, It will granulate quickly but I process a 1/4 million lbs every year and it hits top grades, it’s fine honey
@capebee48396 жыл бұрын
a Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog It might be our cultivars or the way we process. We actually try to avoid producing the honey and rather overstock to build up hives and draw new comb and split before pollination season begins.
@mikeries85496 жыл бұрын
That "smelly socks" smell is goldenrod. Don't let people talk you down on that honey it's very good. I have a list of people who want it but we don't always get a fall crop. (goldenrod/aster)

Do they requeen? If a queen in one nuc dies the pheromone of the queen next to them will be strong enough to make them believe the queen is still there.
