Thanks! Feels good to be working on the rink again. Last year I tore my ACL playing adult city league hockey and had to take a year off, but this year we are back in full force! --- I will be doing an overall video that comes out in February of the build from start to finish. But I'm adding these additional videos to show in more detail the board setup, netting install, and under ice LED lighting. Cheers!

My own ambitions are on pause for one more year due to the fact that the pond 30 yards from my house wasn't drained this year and free ice is free ice so the old 2"x4" lumber rink is out there and will have to do this year as well but I would love to get some of the neighbors together and build something even close this awesome thing you've got going! Hey Jeff! I had the tallboys for the rink I did 2 years ago, it was the first set shipped out ( I transitioned to the 18 inch boards on each long side after the corners . - but they held up great and I only had a couple stakes in them. ( they went up just a couple days before i filled the rink. This year I staked the heck out of them just since I put them up in october and didn't want them to go flying. I will say they held up in a 63 mph gust we had in November. Cheers!
@jeffiscool5
@jeffiscool5 5 ай бұрын
Oh yes! I was thinking this was the first trial run for the tall boys. Should be all set if they can stand up to some + 60 mph gusts. I have a 28 x 56 NiceRink setup I was able to buy used a few years ago. Worth the work once you see the kids out skating on it.
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Hey Jeff! That is awesome you have a 28x56 setup! Yep, I agree. A labor of love but worth it once the kids are out there! -- I would say the only time i'm worried about the boards is before the water goes in. Once the water goes in and covers the feet and freezes against the boards it is rock solid. It's just if you put them up super early like we did that I worry about the high winds blowing them. which happened once when I didn't do every stake! But I also think we have a lot higher winds than most folks will see, especially for those who live in town with homes and fences protecting them. Cheers and I hope the weather gets cold so you can get the rink up soon!!

Very legit backyard rink! Have you ever considered lining the perimeter of the rink with pavers so you don't have to do the layout each year? Also if you feel like saving your arm pounding rebar, get yourself a SDS plus ground rod driver!
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! So I just ordered an SDS plus ground rod driver when I saw your comment a couple days ago and should be in later this week. GENIUS idea! Thanks so much, I can't wait to try it on my Dewalt rotary hammer demo tool! that will save my arms and wrists next year. THANK YOU! -- haven't thought of pavers, would they go outside the rink? I keep the corner stakes in and just do a quick stringline and paint which is easy, but always love to hear ideas!
@alexcheney6692
@alexcheney6692 5 ай бұрын

Great video Pete! I know you said a video is coming for how you did your netting, but those of us who need to put up netting asap (this weekend!) are curious if you can quickly describe it? What kind of stakes are those that you used and how tall? How did you attach the netting? What kind of netting and where did you get it from? Thanks Pete!
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks, you are in luck. I have a video that will go up within the next 48 hours on how we do the stakes ( maybe sooner ). Anyhow, I use 10 foot t posts and attach the netting to it with zip ties. Pound posts in with a post hole pounder ( can get at a hardware store ). If you want to pro up the look of the t posts you can use black foam pipe insulation. Pretty simple, cost efficient, and effective! Check back though in the next few days to see the video. Cheers!

Are you concerned with cutting the led lights again since you're likely going to get snowfall you'll need to blow out before putting the liner on?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Hey! Great question. This was a concern of mine as well. I flagged the lines so I know exactly where they are in case we get snow, and adjusted the skids below the auger so it stays a couple inches off the ground. The LED lights are pulled tighter and have plenty of yard staples this year. So I feel pretty good about it and may even use a shovel to be safe around those areas if the need arises. But last year we put them in when it was really cold and it was hard to get the staples in and the LED coils were so cold it was tough to get them to lay flat. So I do think this will work out better this year and if I were to accidentally cut one I have patch kits. But I will share how it goes in the final video of the rink for sure! Great question and I will know by trial and error this year haha :) Cheers

how do you like the tall boys? I have the nice rink 18 inch boards mine is 32 by 72
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Hey Josh! I like the tall boys. Especially on the ends to keep the puck in when shooting. A net obviously works too, but the boards are definitely nice for that. This is the first year doing the side with tall boys all the way on the one side. So that will be interesting to see what we think of clearing the snow that's made from skating since we will have to shovel it up and over the 4 foot boards instead of an easy toss over the 18 inch boards. Will also be interesting to see how the drifts pile in since we are out in the open and get lots of wind. I will report back after using them this season, but did really like using them on the corners / ends for the last time we did the rink!

I love your rink and your videos but when I look at your lawn and that particular area it doesn’t seem very usable for much in the summer, so why don’t you just leave up a permanent board solution and make 4+ days of your life per year that much easier?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! We just use it in the summer to throw a football around and baseball. We've tried planting grass and it comes in a little thicker each year, but is still very sparse with lots of weeds and thus doesn't make the best field to play around in. But it is lit and it works! It takes about 5 hours to set up the board portion of the project with a couple helpers so isn't too bad. The lights stay up year round. Trimming / mowing around it would be a descent amount of work but probably not too terrible. The boards have done well in the wind, but I'd love to use a U style stake or rebar with a knob on the end to better lock down the board as really high winds can pull it up a bit ( I'm talking 60+ miles per hour ). since the angled rebar isn't 100% efficient in locking it down. Definitely something to experiment with though as it would be nice to save some work! --- Cheers!
