Thanks for the informative video! I'm a bit more conservative in the settings after some testing. I've set up 2 warnings, a 11.2 CELLS warning, and a 3.55 CELL warning. This way I get a "land soon to have around 20%" warning from the CELLS, and a fail-safe lower threshold "badly low individual CELL" warning. I've also bumped the RSSI warning up to 50% after what I'm pretty sure was a signal loss event.

@Gerhard Laubscher I can't seem to reply to your comment directly, so I hope you see this! Yes, RSSI is built-in on most FRsky receivers. I think the only RX that doesn't support it is the L9R as it is designed for long-range. Correct, for altitude you require the variometer sensor which is much like the voltage and GPS sensors. I'm not aware of a way of interfacing the Pixhawk and X8R beyond RSSI information. However, you can send your GPS co-ords to your groundstation via APM telem link, or display them on your OSD via MinimOSD through MAVlink. The RSSI port puts out a voltage which you can connect to your MinimOSD to display RSSI. I think you can also connect this directly to the pixhawk and do pass-through to the OSD. Some googling should show how to set this up :) There's no definitive in/out of the smartport pins, they can be daisy chained together. It's a digital interface and each sensor has an ID number. It's unlikely that you'll have a conflict unless you have two of the same sensor, EG 2x voltage sensors. You CAN also change the ID number if you have a conflict. It shows how to do this in the manual. I've never had to do it. Hope this helps James

@Tan Jing jie you may have to make a balance port splitter so that you can get two balance outputs. The alternative is that you can take power from your main voltage input instead of the balance port.

Thank you for sharing. I am new to Taranis and eventhough this video is from 2014 it helped to figure out some of the main concepts about telemetry programming. My question is: how did you get the altitude and vario data? Were you using the variometer sensor or the gps data from the quad`s control card or something?

At 1.47 you show a long press of the page button to reveal the telemetry screen replete with data. I have "No telemetry screens" showing. How can I get my Smart Port connected FrSky Analogue Voltage Sensor to show up the Lipo voltage? Thank you.

Hi, I just received this FrSKY Lipo Voltage sensor, I added it in the sensors screen, but I have different options visible on my Taranis X9D plus : cels / cels + / cels - (yes, with one "L" and not two). I'm using the X8R, and plugged the Sensor on the smart port… So I can't see the minium cell voltage (of one cell)… Can you tell me what to do ? Thanks for your help !

Hi Doble, Thank you for the interesting video. Can you comment - I take it that RSSI is a telemetry option built-in for the X9D+ and X8R, so one don't need an additional SmartPort Sensor for this telem param? To get the Cell V telem one have to buy the FrSky Smart cell sensor, I understand that. eg your vid refers But how about the Alt sensor? You don't describe what you have used as the Alt Sensor, or maybe I missed it? I assume though one require eg FrSky SmartPort GPS Sensor? Your vid does not clearly identify this? Using a FC like PixHawk, can one interface the FC with X8R such to get the gps params instead of buy a FrSky SmartPort sensors such as the GPS sensor? On the X8R is a RSSI port. What is the purpose of the port? Can one interface this to Pixhawk to set it up as part of OSD In general, I observe on several videos the FrSky SmartPort sensors have two SmartPort connector - pins. Can on use either when connecting the cable, or is there a definitive SmartPort In/Out What if one wants to 'daisy-chain' more than one smartPort. eg Cell, Vario, GPS etc. As a suggestion, maybe you could make a 2nd video demonstrating these connection aspect complete. Hi, I've lost ALT, RSSI, CELLS, CELL the only value telemetry wise I have to choose is Batt & Time, I've updated to NON Eu firmware and installed non eu firmware on my X8R, X6R, X4R and yet none those above telemetry are showing for me to select. Do you know why or whats happened and even shed some light on how I can fix this please? Many thanks

I am running Opent TX 2.1. When the Cell value is played, it only give me the integer and not the decimal portion of the number. I.e. it will say " 3 Volts" when the actual displayed value is 3.65 volts. Any idea on how to fix that.

i want the radio to play the value of cels. on screen is shows the right value of 14,8. when i turn my assigned switch it only plays 14 volts. Do you know whats the problem?

Hi I´ve been having trouble with my telemetry. I broke the antenna accidentally and replaced it with an original from aloft hobbies. After this I no longer have RSSI or voltage. I also have the lipo voltage sensor. What could be wrong? Please help i´ve been searching in many places and no information found. Thanks

First of all I would like to thank you for sharing this video. I have the Taranis radio and the X8R receiver but when I plug my quadcopters battery not show up on the telemetry screen. I set up the cels and cell CS and CF but there is no readings on any of the screens! Can you help?

This may sound like a dumb question. When explaining the RSSI what does the number 45 stand for. And how to figure out what your limited range is?

Hi Dennis, not a dumb question at all! RSSI is basically an indication of the ratio of signal to noise. It's indicated on the scale of 0 to 100. In my experience 45 is a good value as I've found that below 30 the signal can begin to drop out. A warning at 45 gives you time to take action to prevent drop-outs, eg flying closer to home or gaining altitude. As for working out the range, it depends largely on terrain and antenna set-up, you'll need to experiment to find out. Here's an official explanation from FRSKY on how RSSI works: ---- The received signal strength (RSSI) is actually not an absolute value like voltage or temperature but a number that indicates the ratio of the signal to some initial "good" value. It is in dB and is the same measuring system used for audio levels. For a fixed single system like the FrSky system we can treat the RSSI as an absolute value of strength since the "good" value is already chosen and fixed. The only unusual thing is that dB is a logarithmic measure, not linear. What this means is that any increase of 6 means the signal has doubled in strength. So a change of +12 in the RSSSI means the signal has increased in power by 4 times, by +18 means the signal has increased in power by 8 times, by +24 means the signal has increased in power by 16 times. Conversely if the RSSI goes down by -18 the signal power is 1/8 what it was. For the FrSky system the RSSI should read about 110 at 1m and every time you double the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the RSSI level should drop by 6. That's why it goes down quickly at first then less and less as the model flies away since you have to double the existing distance each time to get 6 lower. Theoretically at about 100 meters you should get an RSSI value of about 70 in ideal conditions. A good way to see this effect is to use Range Test mode (since RSSI still works). In range test mode the Transmitter module operates at 1/30 full power. Note where the beeps appear for all three levels. In real flight the distance will be 30x more.

I'm using the Frsky FLVSS lipo sensor and the Frsky Precision vario. I get the "zero volts" message as you do when I switch on my tx. I also keep getting "A2 critical"! Can you tell me what values I need to enter in the range, low and critical alarm settings for both A1 and A2? When on that page on my xt I can see the rx volts but the pack volts don't show up! Thanks

How did you managed to get the quad's all cell voltage (16.1V) displayed at the Taranis home screen just after your Tx voltage display? My Taranis displays the BEC voltage there, and would be nice to have the full voltage displayed. And how did you managed to get the Telemetry screen to show as liner graphs? Mine always display in just numbers. Thanks.

How would I set up telemetry with my minimosd? Can you point me in the direction of a video? I have my minimosd all wired up but I've heard there is something I need to go with the Taranis. Is that correct?

SF PV The taranis telemetry system is separate from minimosd. Minimosd will take information from your flight controller and overlay it over your video feed. The Taranis telemetry system takes information from sensorsr you connect to your receiver and relays it to your transmitter. I haven't heard of anyone combining the two :)

You cell alarm is at 3,58V. I always thought the save discharge range was 3,7V Is it save to go below 3,7V per cell with a lipo 3 cell battery?

OK after spending most of the night working on this I finally got the voltage sensor to work show both cell and cels. I still can't figure out how to set the A1 and A2 range and alarm settings. I calculated using the multiplier and got 19.9 for A2 but can't find a setting for low alarm and critical alarm that satisfies the critical alarm message. Any ideas?

Hey - glad you got it going. The A1 and A2 settings are for if you *don't* have the FLVSS meter. They work on the voltage which the receiver is getting from the ESC. I would disable these (or just set them to a high value so they don't trigger an alert) and then follow the steps in the video to set up voltage monitoring from the FLVSS cell meter.

I am wondering if there's a video where you do go over daisy chaining FrSky SMARTport devices. That was my concern, if you could link up more than one device at a time. (building my first quad now)

Hi John Yes to get altitude you will need a variometer. You can daisy-chain the sensors together. To reset the timer, set up a switch and set the action to 'reset' and then pick the timer you wish to reset.

Excellent video, but I have questions. Voltage seems clear; FLVSS unit on multicopter reads cell voltages from LiPo and "sends" them back to Taranis. RSSI is an algorithm so I assume calculated on Taranis from "packets sent vs packets received" Altitude; how does this info get from the multicopter to the Taranis? Thanks!

Never mind, I read the rest of the posts now. FrSky FVAS-02H SMART Port BARO Altitude Variometer. Not the most easily available item in the UK! I see a "normal" and "high" precision version though - which do you recommend? I know you said you can daisy chain them, but a vid or image of how that looks would be great!

Nigel Coxon Hi Nigel, Daisy chaining simply involves connecting the sensors with a servo wire. They should 'just work' but there are instructions on how to change the channels on the sensors if they don't connect. Here is the instruction manual: open-txu.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/SmartPort-LiPO-Voltage-Sensor-Manual.pdf Also, yes you need the sensor for altitude telemetry. The high precision is accurate to 0.1m and the 'standard' is accurate to within 1m. I'd probably get the high precision as I don't think there's a large price difference.

Yes but I have never had to do that - I think it's mainly if you want to run 2x voltage sensors for example.

How did you get it to display the voltages as bar graphs at the beginning? All I get is the voltage going to the receiver. I have a Pixhawk Power Module cable V1.0 that has voltage & current output. Is it possible to use that somehow? Also you never showed how to get RSSI or altitude at all! How did you do that?

Hi Steve You'll need the relevant telemetry modules to get voltage and altitude. Specifically, you need an "FrSky FLVSS oLED SMART Port Voltage Sensor" to get battery cell voltages, and a "FrSky FVAS-02H SMART Port BARO Altitude Variometer" for altitude. Simply connect these to your FrSky receiver and the Taranis will automatically display the telemetry data. I can't help you with the Pixhawk power module I'm afraid as I don't have one.

thedoble How do I connect all those modules to the one input on the Rx? The PX4 can already send back the battery voltage by telemetry, isn't there some way to get that data to the Rx? Also, how did you get the RSSI value to display a bar on the LCD screen? Does that take a 3rd module?

steve c Hi Steve, if you follow the wiring diagram included with the sensors it shows you how to connect it to the RX. The system is called SMART Port and it allows for daisy-chaining the sensors. So basically you connect one sensor to your RX, then connect the next sensor to the first sensor, and so forth. As for RSSI, as long as you are using a Taranis with a FRSKY receiver, you'll get RSSI automatically.

I'm having issues setting a rssi alarm I have mine set to the same as you but my custom switch is always turned on regardless of what my rssi is actually on at present it's on 81 dB and I have it set to turn on at 45 dB Custom switch is set to a < x RSSI 45 any ideas ??

RCHELIBUG I use a separate sensor for this - there's an FRSky altitude sensor. It's very accurate.
