Setting up the loading ramp for the pigs. Training Pigs with Marshmallows

Today we are setting up a loading ramp from the livestock trailer to the pig pen. We are going to feed the pigs out of the trailer to get them used to it. But the pig pen is a muddy mess to work in, so we are going to get dirty. Afterwards, we are going to use marshmallows to train the pigs to get inside the trailer and find their pig feed.

“ I smell pig” - I would always feed/check on my pigs before going to school and sometimes I would need to step in the pen. I always clean off my boots if I got something on them. In my 9th grade English class I sat in the back of the room by the heater. I remember my teacher stopping her lecture and asked “where are the pig farmers in this room”. You maybe able to clean your boots but when you heat them up the smell comes back. From then on I always wore my rubber boots when checking on the pigs before catching the school bus.

Hello I'm sure you got a good deal on that trailer I like it. Your pigs they are big nice looking. Can see you take good care of them. When I was a kid we had 30 pigs and nobody had the brains back then to set up the trailer before loading day. During the storm of 77 if you know of in Ontario and New York Pennsylvania etc. we had a pig that broke out the barn the day before the storm. She was out in that storm and for 3 months never saw her. She showed up one day her hair 3" long. Have a great day.

My wife was feeding our turkeys and they became domesticated... On Freezer Camp Eve when we went to load them, the first three practically walked into the crates... by the 4th and 5th ones they were getting wise and realizing what was going down... by the 11th one, which we'll call Tom Balboa, it gave my Son who was snagging them up, a whompin like I've never seen. That turkey knew that when the human males catch ya, ya don't come back

If you end the fence at the bottom of the ramp instead of the top, there would be no gap for pigs or dogs to squeeze under the trailer - and no need to use cinder blocks. Also, with the fence ending at the bottom of the ramp, if the ramp is wide enough, you might be able to position the tee posts in front of where the ramp touches the ground, instead of to the sides of the ramp, which would pin the ramp securely in place. This would prevent the top of the ramp from slipping off the trailer if it is jiggled loose by those heavy pigs going up and down it.
@robertduffy5805
@robertduffy5805 2 жыл бұрын
Suggestion - Make a permanent opening into your pig area that is just wide enough to place the ramp in with removable wires or gate between those posts. Then you just remove the wire gate, place the ramp and back the trailer up. Don't have to worry about them or others getting in or out through the gaps .

The marshmallow treat works for pigs and dogs and that was a good idea. Rebecca just picked that tom turkey up with no problem and that is unusual. Rebecca has a special bond with the animals and you can tell they love her. The training the pigs by feeding them in the trailer worked well and worked for the cows also. Looks like every thing is working well on the farm.

Just a thought for next time….. end the electric fence at the bottom of the ramp. Then you don’t have to worry about them getting out (or critters in) underneath the trailer and it’s a smaller opening you need to make in the fence line. It might also be a great place/excuse for a future fence gate… It makes the whole process simple; back up the trailer, set up ramp, tie open gate and you’re done.
