Manual machinery has always interested me. I’ve used the Precision Matthews PM-949TV Precision Mill, PM-1440GT, and TL-1660 on a variety of projects and they’ve served me well. While I still use these lathes, I needed something more-enter the PM-1440HVT-2. Check out how I set it up in this video!

Nice! Gave me flashbacks from my teens and my Dad showing me the Gisholt turret lathe he operated to put my brother and I through college. Long hours and overtime working for GTE/Noth American Philips. God Bless his German Work Ethic!

I just bought and set up a 13x36 lathe in the back of my garage. But it is 80+ years old, so the set up procedure involved scraping years of accumulated sludge off, but not cosmoline! It was 3 phase, so I added a VFD. I've done a basic leveling, but the machinists level will have to wait for a future paycheck....

VERY NICE!!! I have plans in 2024 to add a baby brother, the 1340GT, to my shop. That’s in all likelihood as big as I’ll go or need…or not. 😅

Do not wear gloves around a rotating lathe. That goes for those thin latex ones as well. Its great to see someone talk about setting up a lathe. We just had 9 cnc's leveled and set up 2-3 weeks ago in our shop 👍

Need to get you a 5C collet quick change for the spindle. I think I would have went ahead and gotten with some CNC capability. I get it. Pretty useless for most gunsmithing but it sure is handy to have some ProtoTrak type conversational capabilities.

I’ve been looking at Grizzly. I want a lathe that can ream, thread 30ish inch barrels. 1.25”. If you can’t tell I’m new to this, I’d like to do maybe 10 barrels a year, nothing to crazy. I want to learn how to do it, but for myself. Any suggestions ??

Gavin, a question. What about cutting chamber inside a separate, removable piece of metal. This way I could chamber and shoot either British 303 or 7.62x54. They have identical projectiles and almost identical powder charge.
@jeffreyhallam5517
@jeffreyhallam5517 8 ай бұрын
That’s a very interesting question. Considering that a 7.62x54r brass can be resized for .303 british by simply running it through a .303 form die I kinda get it. I’m not familiar with removable chamber inserts. I’m fairly certain that would be tricky. Laminated steal is not as strong as a homogeneous block of steel and I would fear the detonation of the round to compact the insert inside of the receiver the same way brass thins itself out with repeated firings. Sorta hammering itself out and making it harder and harder to extract the insert. Or maybe you were thinking about separate chamber blocks that thread in as a separate round between the receiver and the barrel?
@odiegator
@odiegator 8 ай бұрын
@@jeffreyhallam5517 Separate Chamber block, removable. With another just like it, chambered in another cartridge. With copper washer inside a recess to provide gas seal between the barrel and the Chamber part. One of the blocks would have a slightly longer throat because 762x54R is that much shorter. Bolt face would have to be wide enough for 762x54 to fit. Headspace can remain true on both, because these blocks would have equal length.

Recommendations for a 700 clone action? Also, anybody in the east side of WA have a recommendation for a gunsmith that's trustworthy enough to build a custom gun? Not that far from Gavin, but im sure there's not a chance of being able to have him build one, much less afford it😂

Level doesn’t matter on a lathe as mush as the alignment. I mean they have lathes on ships that aren’t ever level.

@@bigboreracing356 🙄🙄 Why do you think this? Because of the Name? Sorry but if you a little bit involved in machine tools, you know, that a lot of companies let manufacture their machines in China. All with the their own brand tags. This Lathe you can get here in Europe under different brand names, always exactly the same machine. And i bet, its exactly the same thing at the North American continent! This companies are resellers, not producers!
