Roy attempts to forge weld by hand on an anvil made of ice in order to address the anvil pre-heating myth. If you are interested in learning forge welding basics, we have lots of forge welding tutorials on our channel.
Stay tuned on our channel for more ice anvil videos! We will have more videos of forging on an ice anvil coming out shortly after this video.
This ice sculpture was made by Ice Creations (not a sponsor), located in Napoleon, Ohio: www.icecreations.net/.

Outstanding demo! As far as I know, the only benefit from pre-heating is extended working time when forging, not for forge welding. As a formerPhysics instructor, I would suspect that the only way to gain advantage in forge welding through heating an anvil would be to heat the anvil to near forge welding temperature itself, which would possibly help the weld but would ruin the heat treatment on the anvil.

I'd like to see you heat up 3 bars of steel that are 1 inch x 0.25 inch and set them down one on top of the ice anvil one on top of a room temp anvil and the last on anvil thats 150ish or more degrees like it would be if you had been forging on it for the last 2 or 3 hours and see which bar loses its heat the fastest. I forge outside and i know in the winter time the amount of time i get out of a single heat is much shorter than a heat in the summer time.

While preheating the anvil may give slightly more work time, the reason you preheat the anvil isn't that. I have amongst my anvils one that used to be about 175 pounds, it is a lot less now. The heal was broken off before the hardy and this isn't the only anvil I have come across with similar damage due to not being warmed up before heavy use. YES AMVILS NEED TO BE BROUGHT UP TO WORKING TEMP BEFORE HEAVY USE. if someone lives in mild temperatures then it isn't as important but if it gets COLD, preheat the anvil.

@@ChristCenteredIronworks but if you're working the metal it will obviously stay hot longer and impact the results. I'm sure there would be a difference even if it's a few seconds, you would need an IR thermometer to truly test it.
@putteslaintxtbks5166
@putteslaintxtbks5166 3 ай бұрын
This may prove it isn't needed, but just physics, the greater the temp difference, the quicker heat will transfer and be absorbed out of any worked metal, but with more mass, it will take longer. I've never preheated an anvil, but you could work on it longer befor reheating work (or just work real fast!). I have never preheat an anvil, but have thought about it when working some lite items because you could only get a couple swings in befor they needed to be reheat and often in the winter, in an unheated garage, the anvil was about the temp of ice, it would have taken way longer heating up the anvil then just reheating the work.
@blkacid
@blkacid 3 ай бұрын

So it tuns out I have no more excuse not to forge on my outside anvil in our very moderate winter. So my subjective impression of my flat carbon steel stock cooling too fast is wrong. Makes sense as there is only max 30°C difference between seasons. It's just me that the anvil feels cold to.
