Do you struggle to get good results with green screen? You're not alone! In this video I give you seven tips on how to improve your green screen results, specifically for stop motion animation. There are lots of things you need to bear in mind from the quality of your screen to the way you light it and the distance your characters are from the screen itself.
Getting better at green screen takes a little practice and some trial and error.... but you can achieve great results really inexpensively if you follow the best practices I've outlined in this video.
I'm Tortor, a stop motion animator with many years experience. I've worked on a feature film, in television development and set up my own independent production company too. On this channel I teach you how to make stop motion videos on your smartphone, or using Dragonframe. I make videos on everything from tutorials to short films to top tips and advice - there is something here for everyone, at every level. We have claymation, paper cutout, Lego and more. Please do subscribe for new content every week.

Thank you again 👍❤️👍 I made a green, blue and white screen picture boxes / studio's out of dollar store poster board and zip ties for $6 each and they work great for my personal need. I now need better lighting and it's a go. 👍👍 Thank you for your help, time and efforts. I'm very new to all this. 🙏

Thanks for the video. I used to try to do green screen with my pipe cleaner animals, and I got frustrated with it and stopped. But your video helped me figure out what some of my problems were. I think my characters were too close to the green. I also was using a fuzxy green blanket and my critters are fuzy so I think that was the proble. I should use a smooth. Ot fluffy fabric if I green screen again😊
@Animatortor
@Animatortor 3 жыл бұрын
I think both the things you have pointed out will help improve your result if you change them. Lighting and keying out green screen is hard to do completely cleanly... even for the professionals. I am animating on glass with green beneath and even following all my own advice and everything I have ever been taught the results still haven't been completely perfect. Another thing to remember is that the green screen (whatever you are using) needs to be well lit too and that clean edges are going to key out better than fluffy edges for sure 😎
@pipecleaneruniverse5749
@pipecleaneruniverse5749 3 жыл бұрын
@@Animatortor i hope you can get you green screet to work. The glass sounds like a good idea unless the light bounces off it and gets confused. When I did my three green screen videos I was just using natural light I think. The characters came out really blurry in them and look flat. So ZI could improve a lot with what you said.

Thank you so much :) Awesome, being ambitious is great!! Also, as an ambitious person myself, if things don't go perfect the first time... that's natural, so don't beat yourself up, just keep learning and having fun and things will get better with time :) Yes, that was Premiere Pro - I realise now looking back at the video that I didn't make that very clear, sorry about that. All the best of luck with your animations and getting the green sheet

If you want to use fabric and you can't be bothered to iron it I've found that alligator clips work well to stretch the fabric and hold it so that it's flat.

Hey thank you for this video! You advise in the video not to place your puppets on the green screen but I was wondering what your suggestion would be if I want to green screen the floor out from under a characters feet? Should I rig them to hover over it? Or is there some clever lighting I could do to help with the shadows?
@Animatortor
@Animatortor 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. Often in this situation an animator might raise up the character and animate on top of glass (if that's possible) it depends if you are using tie-downs or magnets in feet... then obviously that kind of thing wouldn't be possible. You could try rigging your character to hover... maybe place your character in the scene and do a test still... take your image into the edit and try keying out and see how much spill affects your character. You may find things are okay. I'm afraid in these situations it is often trial and error. Hope that you manage to figure it out. If I come up with anything genius I'll let you know :)

A great video. I'm having trouble with lighting. I simply can't get the background even to use chroma key with good results. I'm using 2 home depot fan lights with wax paper to diffuse. I'm getting the bleeding into my characters and other set props. Any suggestions?
@Animatortor
@Animatortor 5 жыл бұрын
How much distance have you got between your subject/character and the screen? Also only use as much green as you need for your shot... if your green screen is much larger than you need then try and reduce it... see here for explanation ezgreenscreen.com/reducing-green-spill/ - hope that helps... will let you know if I think of anything else

I have researched green screen lighting off and on for over a year now with much frustration. No one would give specifics. Your suggestions were amazing! That link to the video made everything click. I have way too much green screen on my table and backdrop. I have about 18 inches from the back of my table to the green screen on my wall. I thought, out of ignorance, the bigger the table with green, the better. Sheesh, was I wrong. The smaller, the better. Keep your videos coming. They are a huge help!

Oh no, I can see the issue, such a shame. Can you ask for something better as a present? Some smooth card or a bit of green fabric maybe. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to resolve this other than putting more light on it maybe but I think you will still have problems. Nice animation though, really great work :)

My problem is when I get my toys and try the colors like one had a color yellow and some parts of the green screen got on the bits of the hair
@Animatortor
@Animatortor 3 жыл бұрын
That can be a problem, green has yellow within it, so it will tend to key out yellow too or spill onto lighter colours in that way. Have you tried using a different colour, like blue? That might work a little better. If you have anything blue at all at home: a plain t-shirt, piece of card - give it a go and see if it's any better. If it works well then you can think about getting a big blue piece of card :) Hope that helps. Also I made another video which you may find useful here too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odBzaNdexMy4lWw.html

Red screen? How does that work in options?
@Animatortor
@Animatortor 3 жыл бұрын
If you characters/set and scene are absent of red... then that would be a good shout to try a red screen. The best thing would be to do a test... if you have any browns or skin tones you may find that red isn't a great idea as the warmth in other colours might get keyed out too. You can use the pippet colour picker tool in an editor like AE of Premiere to select any colour to key out.

Well some editors will only allow green or blue. The stop motion studio app only has those two options too... but any colour can be keyed out in the Adobe softwares.
@richardmalmberg7722
@richardmalmberg7722 2 жыл бұрын
@@Animatortor One reason green is chosen is that most modern digital sensors have about twice as many green pixels in their sensors as red and blue. Also green is farther away from skin tones. But testing is always best. I try to pick a background color that is close to what will eventually be placed in the background. Also don't forget black or white as choices. They can sometimes work great. Great tutorial!
