I would highly recommend the 50mm prime lens from canon. It's really affordable, and is a really sharp and detailed lens.

This is so informative! I think I have that first canon lens you mentioned and I definitely have had some times that I accidentally bump the image or something. I might consider getting an older lens at some point in the future though. I’m sure I can find one in my city.

I've been using a Rokinon 35mm T1.5 cinema-style lens, which is definitely on the budget end of cinema lenses. It's fully manual, so no flicker issues. Minimum focus distance is 12 inches (0.30m), but what I really like is the approx. 170 degress of barrel turn to focus from 12" to infinity. Much easier to get precise focus. It has a fair amount of focus breathing, but I haven't had to pull focus much.

Thanks for the video! I'd highly recommend the Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm f2.4. It has a minimum focus distance of 18cm and it can be found for quite good prices!

You make excellent educational videos for stop motion, and kudos for taking the time to share them. This leads to a question, as lens focal lenght is causing a personal headache. My kit is a Nikon D5300 with 18-55 VR kit lens, and running DragonFrame 4. I came accross the following two lenses Nikon 35mm 1.8G DX / Nikon 50mm 1.8G DX/FX. My kit lens seems to cover mid range, but was wondering if one of those lenses would cover mid to close as the kit lens is not flexable enough.

Thanks for making a video pertaining to stop motion lens choices. I appreciate the variety of perspective. I've been using a Sony camera with one of the older nikkor 28mm lenses most of the time. With the adapter as an extension tube, It's astonishing how close you are able focus. Additionally, I thought I would ask if it would be common for you to use a single focal length for short films. I'm asking because I want to use my Voigtlander 50mm lens for stop motion. This is my favorite lens to use for stills. However, I have a greater focal length selection if I go with my 3 nikkor lenses. I know the color rendition would be different between the different manufacturers. Can you really get away with a single focal length for short film production. Thanks for all of the videos you've created over the years. It really mean a lot to me. It's difficult to find solid stop motion information. Keep up the great work you're doing.

I was looking for one for a Canon EOS R fromm the same company and noticed the adapter was a lot deeper than the one you linked to - would that change the operation of the lens?

So far, I've used a Nikon D71oo with SIGMA lens 17-50 mm + a 18-55 mm lens with Close-up & Micro lens set: +1D - + 2D - +4D & 10D micro. It has all worked fairly ok, though the camera plus lens is quite heavy to work around with - when not mounted with tripod :-)).

I want to add my take on the subject from what I have gathered throughout time. All in all the video is doing a great job explaining everything so for the most part I will get more specific and will offer some budget options that may get you to a high end setup for the same money you would get an entry level settup. Any brands I will mention are brands that are ideal for the scenario and not brands that I had any bias towards (otherwise this comment would be just for Fujifilm and Phase One). I will start with the camera because I feel there's a lot to add on top of what the video said. First of all I would greatly not suggest working with a DSLR camera, right now they have some attractive prices but for the nature of these projects DSLRs are too bulky, heavy, clunky and limitting compared to Mirrorless. You generally don't want to have cameras that are too big and clunky bc it can cause unwanted movements even when mounted on a tripod. The main reason I would suggest a mirrorless though is the access you have to vintage glass and to Chinese thierd party manual lenses. Mirrorless naturally offer much more options for mounting lenses due to the minimal space the camera's mount has from the sensor, while in DSLRs some lenses cannot be mounted bc you will not get the right focus or you will get additional distortions. Sony is one great option all around, the cameras are pretty customisable and they are pretty well known for their low light performance, anything will do really but Sony will come back soon. Lenses, I could go on and on about lenses but the important things to mention is if you can get them declicked aparture, that's ideal. Some vintage lenses have that option that will let you work with every f value and will greatly reduce the risk of camera shake. Nikkor lenses do not offer that option but their range is simply too convinient and the pricing pretty good to not suggest them. I would suggest going for the 21mm the 28mm the 35mm and 50mm, I think 85mm is too expensive for stop motion projects but if you feel it's necessary go for it, 21 will be more of use that is what I can guarantee you. The lenses I can suggest you more than the Nikkor ones are the Chinese manual brands, TTartisan and 7Artisans, they both offer manual lenses that perform superb from f2 onwards they offer cheap options for f1.4 and wider (with lots of distortion and softness though), most of their lenses either come declicked or they can be declicked and both of them offer cine versions of lenses that are slightly sharper slightly birghter and with gear mounts of their rings (priced usually at 300-500$). The other vintage glass I can suggest is Leica R lenses, they are limitting due to their eh focus and I would suggest to only look for the focal length that you use the most, because they can get pricy and they mostly offer a unique rendering mostly in colours, they are well known to perform like cine lenses though. Sony has one option that most camera brands don't though. Really REALLY cheap auto focus vintage glass, cheaper than Nikon's D lenses (which I also do suggest greatly) and that's the Minolta AF lenses with the necessary adapter. Those lenses have really good auto focus and they fit well on the newer cameras, they all have short focusing distances, they are fast, sharp, only thing is that they do not have an apparture ring, but they offer the option to set the apparture whatever value you want. For beginners I would say whatever fast 50mm you can get your hands on is a great starting point, make sure to get it with a lens hood and make sure to get defusers for your lights, with a set of lights and a nifty fifty that goes up to f1.4 you can do everything. I would also suggest you to go with a puppet or anything that will be a good reference point to a camera store and try the different focal lengths i mentioned, see which fits best for your take and always measure it in terms of usability. 21mm for example is a pretty cinematic focal length but it comes handy in certain scenarios only.

I think the 24mm stm from canon is a potential choise. it is like a sharper 18-55 but prime. how is it? is a kind of wide angle, not too much distored so you could get a more natural looking and as it focus at 16cm, the result is just a little wider then the 18-55 at 55mm. Sure, 55mm get actually closer, but 24mm is 2.8 and prime, you can get even shallower depth of field than 55mm f5.6 if you need it or get the same or longer just stoping down and due to be fix focal, you do not loose quality or light transmition which change throughout the zoom range. It's main drawback is the focus ring and motor, it is sensitive and can't be locked, so any touch could be death.

Thank you for this really informative video. I have a Nikkor 35mm lens I'd like to use on my Canon 5dMkii. It seems to have a flange which interferes with the mirror. Am also planning on buying the Nikkor Micro 105mm and from what I can see on the photographs it may have the same problem. Is there anything I can (like cut it off with my dremel)?

I have been looking at the Canon R/RP camera bodies with RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM lens. The R and RP can get a Stop Motion firmware update that allows 1920 x 1280 live view as well as manual focus peaking, aperture lock and Funktionen Focus Position Memory. Did you try or hear about the R/RP? Any thoughts?

I have the 24-105L, the only problem I have with it is it won't hold it's zoom when used overhead. Otherwise I love it.

Why don't you make the puppets more bigger it'll be easier to work with and you won't have to zoom in so close I know in the Coraline movie they use bigger puppets I think they were like over 10 or 13 maybe 12 in tall so maybe you could work with something like that maybe a little bit smaller than 10 in I say maybe 9 in I just feel it needs to feel good in your hands so that you can work with it I mean the size is relevant and shouldn't really affect the overall Film Production so I think that's something to look into.

Great animation, but terrible choice of background music, which made me stop watching the video early on, as I got tired of hitting the mute on and off when I thought the talking parts came on. Anywayz, the point is, when designing videos we need to design for our audiences tastes and not our own, and the inappropriate rock noise track that was chosen here, would only appeal to a small fraction of the audience of this channel and generally those would be the younger 12-30 age group. A softer, more easier listening and non-offensive background tune would have grinded less viewers down, especially us older folk, and led to greater viewer satisfaction. Apologies if I left any commas out ;-)
