I love that almost all your videos have bird sounds as a background haha. Thanks for the flip through! I'm torn between Spelling Connections and 180 days of spelling, I feel like they are very similar!

My house has openings up high in the walls to let fresh air in (common in our part of the world)...and the openings let all the outdoor noise in as well...so this is the true experience of living in my house. ha! Sometimes, though never yet during a video, the birds have actually flown in through the openings and then we have to encourage them to find their way back out again. Yes, I think Spelling Connections and 180 Days of Spelling are pretty similar in approach, just slightly different sorts of exercises.

We've only been using the first one for a few weeks so far, but I've been really appreciating the approach, and I know that if my son ends up needing a little more practice with word lists in the future, it's easy to add more simple practice. One of the exercises he had this week was to write 1 sentence that had 'hen and wet', and one sentence that had "den and fed" --so 2 sentences, each with 2 of his spelling words in them. I was so impressed by his creativity in writing sentences that made sense and used the spelling words. I appreciate little assignments like that!

@@SevenInAll yes, we tried Masterbooks spelling, Sequential Spelling, Evan Moor, Spelling U See and Logic of English Essentials before landing on All About Spelling. I wish it could be done more independently but that’s the name of the game in my homeschool. My kids just require more direct instruction from me and I’m actually okay with that because I looooove teaching and seeing them learn.💕 I have learned, even with intensive teacher requirements, if we keep the lessons short (10-20 mins) it’s not so bad and A LOT of progress can be made with consistent intentional daily lessons!

Is this a fairly new curriculum? Before last week I had never heard of it. My daughter would have loved this! It seems like a similar skill as Explode the Code (which she loved and HAD to do all the levels of), but it’s SO pretty and in color! ❤😂

We love Explode the Code here, too! Zaner-Bloser has been around forever, but their brand is mostly associated with handwriting books. The Spelling Connections curriculum has been around for a bit because I've seen different copyright years on books being sold on Rainbow Resource, etc, this current edition that they're selling is copyright year 2022.

Your sister does such an amazing job with the artwork.

Thank you for the video! Can you tell how much parent involvement there is? I'm hoping not too much (for grades 3 and up).
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Ай бұрын
The way I use it, this is pretty independent other than me giving the actual spelling test at the end of a unit. We're using the 1st grade level currently and this is one of the books that my son will just pull out, complete a page or two--if he has any questions about instructions he'll ask me, and I'll check it at the end to make sure he completed the work correctly, but it can be used pretty independently. With a more struggling speller they may need more involvement and hand-holding from the parent, but this is a good fit for a more traditional/independent approach.

Not sure if you mentioned this in your video... i might have missed it... but i noticed that there is teachers manual that you can buy... do you think its beneficial?
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 4 ай бұрын
I've only seen the sample of the Teacher's Guide, but to me it didn't look like a whole lot, mostly just answers as well as suggestions on what to point out for different spelling rules or ideas for how to teach a new spelling concept. Could be beneficial for those who want some more ideas, but not required or necessary, unless you want to have the answer key in hand for easier/faster checking in the higher levels. Just using the workbook means there's no answer key. :P

Can you share why you chose this over All About Spelling? I’m currently trying to decide for my upcoming 1st grader.
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 4 ай бұрын
I think All About Spelling is a very thorough approach to teaching spelling. Not all learners need a very thorough approach. From my observation, spelling comes very easily/naturally to some learners, and for others is a much more challenging skill (for me, spelling was always very easy--any word I see, I can spell. For some of my sisters, spelling has been a lifelong challenge). With a very young student who is just beginning to spell, you can't really tell yet whether or not spelling will be challenging. Since my son has picked up on most school things pretty quickly, I decided to begin from the assumption that spelling will probably come pretty easily to him, and picked an inexpensive curriculum option that I would choose for a child who learns spelling easily. If spelling turns out to be very difficult for him to master, I can always scale up to a more thorough approach later on, but I'd rather scale up later if he needs more, than begin with an expensive, thorough curriculum for a subject that he easily flies through, if that makes sense?

I’d be worried about how much writing my child would have to do before moving on to the next set of words. I realize I wouldn’t have to make her do all activities, but if I’m skipping half the book I don’t feel like it was money well spent. 🤔
@SevenInAll

A child who learns how to spell new words without needing to write them down a few times probably wouldn't need a workbook like this. :) Meanwhile, some children will actually need even more repetitions of writing words down and spelling them aloud in order to master new words. This is probable 'middle of the road' as far as meeting the needs of kids who don't need a ton of practice with spelling words, but do need to practice them in a few different ways. I've always been one who learns by writing things down, and I've noticed that plays a big role for my son, too, so I tend to be drawn toward these types of resources. Spelling Power is an old, classic spelling book that can be used with kids who advance very quickly through spelling lists and don't need much practice.

@@SevenInAll IEW Phonetic Zoo says if you aren’t ready to start level A, you should start with Spelling You See. We are flying through that and skipping tiles and cards (which are supposed to be what add value to the program.) What I really want is Phonetic Zoo lessons starting with the rules and wordlists from Spelling You See. She’s still a beginning speller, but catches on as soon as I teach the rule. She can “take the test” as soon as I teach the rule. She doesn’t need to practice writing them multiple times first and she retains everything from lesson to lesson.
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 4 ай бұрын
I've used Spelling You See and didn't actually know that there were tiles and cards supposed to be added. Ha! I love the Spelling You See level A because kids are just writing the words they hear vs. spending time memorizing a list. It's likely that with a student who learns spelling like this, spelling will be a very short term part of the school routine, not something that continues through all of elementary. @@BearBettermentSchool

Could this also work as a writing portion of our school day? I just feel im stuck between this spelling curriculum or a writing curriculum such as handwriting without tears.. it would definitely be too much writing for my boys.. thoughts?
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 4 ай бұрын
If your children already know correct letter formation, then yes, you use a different subject, like spelling, for the writing practice they need. This won't teach letter formation, but once the skill of writing has been learned, I like to have them practice the skill in different books vs. just have a handwriting book.

If you're wanting a screen-free option, Homeschool Languages is set up for you to to teach even if you have zero knowledge of Spanish yourself. I talk about that curriculum at the beginning of this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a96fnNSTx5i6gYk.htmlsi=doOfeHa23qXx_sLm I really like what I've seen from Homeschool Languages although I haven't used them in my own homeschool. This is a common question I get so I will try to make a video in the future about Spanish when you don't speak it.
