On May 23, 2019 a cold front associated with an area of low pressure in Quebec Canada, sank down into Upstate New York. Mild instability with high westerly mid level winds resulted in a rather low topped, but intense thunderstorm squall line. Winds likely gusted to near 50 mph as the storm downdraft moved through from the west. Also of note was rather impressive southerly warm inflow being ingested by the storms prior to their passage at the beginning of the video. It was quite fascinating to see the wind shift from southerly to westerly within 30 seconds as the squall line passed over.

Thanks! For nighttime chases, I usually try to seek out an area with really good lighting. I was happy with my choice here. Filming toward street lights is an excellent way to video wind driven rain.

I grew up in Schenectady. Your good video rimended me so much of the intense storms we had when I was a kid. Loved thunderstorms until our house got hit. We were very lucky, there was no fire. I was a little wary of storms for a while after that. Thanks for sharing this.

Was there any hail in those storms?
@storm12weather
@storm12weather Ай бұрын
I didn't see any hail in this area. It's possible some of them produced small hail but for the most part these storms were exclusively wind producers.

How long did the storm last?
@storm12weather
@storm12weather 2 жыл бұрын
They were organized into a bit of a squall line so not too long. The high winds only lasted about 3 minutes. It rained heavily for about 15 minutes and tapered off during the next 15 minutes after that.

This was a squall line that was severe warned at the time. As far as winds at the location I filmed, I'd estimate they gusted to around 40 mph. For a NY storm it was a pretty good intensity. I suppose it comes down to what you consider "high winds". I used that label in this video because, despite the severe warning, I didn't observe severe criteria (58 mph winds or greater) but I felt it was intense enough to include that in the title. There were also several wind damage reports (downed trees) across the area. I do have other videos where I actually observed severe level winds though.

@@storm12weather does qlcs mean bow echo? Mini bows are called lewp( seriel bow echo)
@storm12weather
@storm12weather 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattjenssen7518 qlcs stands for Quasi Linear Convective System. Basically an organized squall line of thunderstorms. A "bow echo" is just a term used to identify sections of a squall line on radar that advance faster than the rest of the line. Areas of a qlcs or squall line that "bow" out tend to hint at stronger downdrafts in that area forcing the convection to grow forward more rapidly. Thus the strongest winds tend to be located along those bowed out segments.

@@storm12weather how strong arecwinds usually in the bows?
@storm12weather
@storm12weather 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattjenssen7518 That can vary drastically. The wind speed a storm can produce is dependent on several variables. The strength of the downdraft and how heavy the precip is, the mid level wind fields the storm is interacting with, the amount of instability available, etc. In this case the winds were probably gusting between 40 and 50 mph in my footage. But its hard to estimate wind speeds just by looking at them.
