On Thursday September 7th, 2023, the SPC placed most of eastern NY under a Slight Risk of Severe Weather. As a cold front approached at the surface, dewpoints near 70 degrees and diurnal surface heating resulted in moderate levels of instability. Additionally, a tightening horizontal temperature gradient occurred as a weak upper-level trough interacted with a blocking ridge off the east coast. This produced a modest 30 to 35 kt southwesterly mid-level jet.
While these conditions are sufficient to produce severe weather, the evening squall line that impacted much of the mid and upper Hudson valley was far more intense than I expected. While multiple variables were undoubted at play, it appears that mid-level dry air and steep low-level lapse rates helped to produce greater downdraft accelerations. This dry air helped to increase the negative buoyancy of rain-cooled downdrafts within the line and funneled intense winds to the surface. The line even developed a substantial rear inflow jet as it moved through the region, allowing it to enhance the mid-level wind field before pulling it down to the surface. The result was several minutes of damaging winds exceeding 60 mph in gusts.
Several Mesonet stations recorded wind gusts of 60 mph or slightly higher within 20 miles of my filming location. The town of Chatham where I intercepted this line, received widespread tree damage with power outages across the region. I returned prior to a storm chase the following afternoon to document some of the damage. The power company had already restored many areas and much of the downed trees had been cleared from the roadways.

05:36 very very close lightning strike..
@storm12weather
@storm12weather 8 ай бұрын
Definitely within a thousand feet. The interesting thing about that strike though is the thunder was not nearly as loud as most really close strikes I've experienced. I wonder if it was a leader that failed to connect and was branching off of the main bolt. Usually strikes less than 1000 feet away are extremely loud.

We had a very bad storm a couple of months ago and we had a lot of close lighning strikes and it was very scary and my mom was very worried that our house would get stuck by lighning. The lighning in the video was almost like the same lighning we had a couple of months ago sticking very close to our house and crashing very loudly.

here in Chester NY it was a brief 40-50 gust with 60+ in many spots near and just to the NE and by your filming location as well but in Goshen there was a cell on radar about 3 miles in front of squall and it didn't look impressive on radar but you could see a lot of rotation on the time laps I took in the midlevel's of the storm but given the fact it didn't look all that good on radar I stayed put (mistake) we drove through Goshen the next day and it looked like a warzone with countless trees down being massive in size roofs and siding peeled it looked like 90-100 mph winds moved though there it was insane likely a microburst/ downburst... but anyway fantastic footage keep it up!!!

Appreciate that! I've gotten better at containing my excitement while filming. 😁. And yes, the thunder from that strike is strange. It was very close but much quieter than usual for that distance. It almost makes me think it was an incomplete leader or branch of the main strike while the main strike may have been farther away.

my home town! I’ve never seen storms like this around here. I live closer towards Albany now and we didn’t see anything like this. the damage was so bad the next morning the chatham school district had to close on the second day of classes.

This day was interesting. The large scale setup favored some severe storms, but it was much worse than I expected. The downdrafts in this line of storms were able to tap into a lot of downward potential energy. Basically dry air getting entrained into the downdrafts allowed them to accelerate downward faster than usual and produce very strong winds. I go into a bit more detail in the video description. As far as Chatham, Yes, that night the damage was extensive. But with it being dark with no power and with emergency responders already arriving I didn't want to get stuck or get in the way, so I came back the next afternoon. I have to say I was impressed by how much clean up had been done in just those 12 hours. The roads were already mostly cleared by then.

@@storm12weather It was a crazy storm, I know people who didn't have power for a few days because they had soo many trees down in certain spots. On July 4th we had a severe storm come through the Schodack Landing and Stuyvesant area and there was swaths of trees just taken down by 100 mph straight winds. It took them over a week to clean up that area and put up all new power poles and lines.

That's actually a power flash from lines going down. You can see more at 4:45, 4:54, and 4:58. It can be hard to differentiate them from lightning but after a while you get an eye for it. They usually have a dimmer, longer lasting glow. Another giveaway is the fact that they light the clouds from below and you sometimes see oranges mixed in.
