It's so reassuring to see a professional, highly skilled quilter make a mistake. I laughed so loud the dogs were startled. Thank you Leah for another fantastic video. Off to order the templates now.

You know what is nice too Leah? When you turn the blade around and make a nice end as well. You then don't need the middle bit and can do some lovely patterns

What an amazing tutorial this was! I just love Dresden Plate blocks and have wanted to try it but wasn't sure how to address some of the issues you did here. My two favorite parts were: you included the "error" of ironing the sticky material on the incorrect side, which is the best way for us to learn from that mistake (which we have all made); and, showing us what all the various combinations look like at the end. I know that took you a lot of time and I really appreciate it. Thank you, Leah! You're the best.

You're super welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video even with the mistake. Lol - that was actually kinda lucky because the fabric looked good enough on both sides. Some fabrics I wouldn't have been able to get away with it. I'm so glad you found this helpful!

Hooray! I have a 10" temp and a 10" die to make these but unwanted round tops too just didn't know how to make sure I was cutting a proper top. I'm thinking you could use a compass to draw the top on the template? I don't have anything to copy. Thanks so much for these. I made a big puff w Halloween fabric a few yrs ago and loved it so much I just keep it under my sewing table to rest my feet on.😁 Think I'll make some jumbled Dresdens on table runner this year. Just love the way you teach.

couldn't you put fusible Web on both edges so you can still alternate your cut direction? Would Web on the small end hurt anything? Hey, just like Bob Ross the painter.....it wasn't a mistake, it was a "Happy Accident". Thanks for the grrrrrrreat video!
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the more I played with these Dresden Plate quilt blocks, the more variations I came up with. With fusible web on both edges, you have a lot more possibilities with fusible edges. You can even cut the smaller edge with a curve or point to change up the inside finish as well.

What can u do with the back side? If you don't sew it down to a square.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay Жыл бұрын
You could make 2 matching Dresden plates and sew them together to make a pillow. With the straight edge templates (1, 3, and 5) you could sew them together as 8, 12, and 16 sided polygons and then figure out the shape to fill in between... that would be pretty interesting! It's honestly most common to treat these like applique and stitch them to a background of some sort.

@LeahDay
@LeahDay 7 жыл бұрын
LOL! Yep, I make a lot of mistakes, but generally edit them out of my videos. This time I was caught off guard and noticed only after cutting that I'd fused that fabric incorrectly. Oh well! As for making them into a quilt, check out this video on piecing a Pointy Petal Dresden Plate. I also cover how to stitch it down to the background fabric too: freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2017/02/how-to-piece-pointy-eight-petal-dresden.html

great video - how would you go about handling the edges of vintage dresden plates that have already been sewn together? Help I'm in over my head Beth
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the edges of the Dresden plates, or the edges of the squares they are stitched to? If it's the Dresden plates (curved or straight edges) then I would hand stitch them down or maybe blanket stitch with a sewing machine. If they are very thin or very tattered, consider reinforcing them with plain fabric behind or stabilizer.
@bethdrobka5984

Thank you for quick response. All your suggestions make a lot of sense - as it is the edges of the plates that I am working on. Your tutorial is so good that if I survive this vintage quilt finish I will work with your 'how-to' methods.
