The Raccoon Case is a clever, super quick and fun to make little case, started out as a sunglasses case, but works for everything from pencils to makeup brushes. It's a great scrap buster and you can use layer cake leftovers. It is a FREE pattern available for download on my website: www.pinkponydesign.com/produc...
0:00 Start
0:04 Materials and preparation
4:15 Baste the layers and quilt (I often use a fusible web instead of glue or pin basting as I like the stability I get from the fusible web, it's been excluded in this video to lower the amounts of materials needed, however, it does give a lovely, crisp result with a light fusible web when using cotton fabric for the exterior, such as Heat n Bond Lite).
7:57 Preparing and installing the zipper
17:23 Turning and topstitching
24:27 Determine size and sewing closed
I hope you will enjoy this easy and quick to make (less than an hour to make) little case as much as I do, it's a perfect, quickly whipped up gift. If you want to make a raccoon case using #5 zippers, I have a video with tips for that here: • Sewing the Raccoon Cas...
You are most welcome to sell items made from my patterns, this is a great cheap item for craft fairs and similar. Many people will love to buy a matching sunglasses case with their new handcrafted bag too. I hope you'll like my video, please let me know what you think in the comments!

@@PinkPonyDesign I made my first one. My dad wants one that straps on his belt with Velcro. It didn't turn out the way I was hoping though. I cut up a microfiber cloth that frays very easily to use as the liner, so I used an overcast stitch to sew the liner on which gave the case a funny shape lol. I shouldve just serged the edges of the microfiber cloth beforehand.

Looks lovely. It would be nice with binding so you have no raw edges too.
@PinkPonyDesign
@PinkPonyDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for bringing this up, I should have mentioned in the video. I don't do a binding as it makes the bottom bulky when you turn the case, however, one can choose to make a french seam for example or by all means a binding if one isn't bothered by the added bulk =)

Thank you for the pattern and video. Is there only one straight stitch at the bottom of the zipper? Have there been any issues with the stitching releasing the zipper at the bottom? I imagine one could serge the bottom seam… but it might skew the zipper.
@PinkPonyDesign
@PinkPonyDesign Ай бұрын
I've not had any issues with the zipper coming loose, and I use my Raccoon Cases often and with sometimes heavy use (in the stables as cases for scissors etc.). But if you feel uncertain, you can always add an extra line of stitches? 😊 I've never tried serging this, so I don't know how that would go, nor have I owned my serger long enough to say if it would approve of an attempt or not 😄

Love this pattern. I have a small piece of leather I was thinking of trying. Would you suggest still using something like soft and stable or will this make it too thick?
@PinkPonyDesign
@PinkPonyDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Awww, thank you, so glad you like it! That's so difficult to say as there's so many kinds of thickness of leather... Maybe cut out your piece and fold it over a piece of foam to see how it feels? If it feels too heavy/thick, maybe try some batting or something like a fusible fleece instead?

I'm so sorry for missing your comment! You're absolutely right, that's a great habit to have. As I sew over every seam in this pattern with at least two other seams, I felt ok skipping it (I'm such a lazy sewist, I know!). But I'll absolutely try to make it a habit of doing so! Thank you for reminding me!
