After looking through SO MANY different tutorials (some free, some not) I have picked my FAVORITE grocery tote bag! This is super fast to sew together, extremely beginner friendly, incredibly durable and SO PRETTY.
The tutorial is by Purl Soho. They provide great step-by-step instructions and photos to make this wonderful bag.
I tweaked it just a little, changing the measurements to allow for a 2-toned bag, and combining bits of each of their 3 methods to make a lined, boxed bottom bag.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial! Make yourself and everyone you know one of these to replace their boring plastic grocery bags.

Dimensions to create exterior panel:

This is truly the best reversible shopping bag pattern available. The method that Jess presents is genius for several reasons: the clever way of adding the lining, enclosing the seams, and attaching the woven straps are simple to sew yet makes the bag very sturdy. I make more than a hundred each summer to donate to a local breast cancer clinic to give the patients, so I verify what a huge time savings Jess's method makes. It was an 'ah ha!' moment for me- I instantly sewed a bag Jess's way and was thrilled to be able to complete the bag in less than 15 minutes. Game changer!! For those that are new to sewing, don't worry if it takes you much longer to complete, that's normal. Even as a veteran sewer, the first time I use a new clothing pattern, it takes me a couple of days because I really have to think about the sequence etc. What is revolutionary about Jess's sequence is sewing the straps as the same time as the finished edge- previously I would finish the edge and then sew the straps on top of that. In addition, I sewed 2 separate bags and attached them together for lining- big time waster. Lastly, using the French/flat seam method for the raw edges is so quick and very durable. Previously I was serging the raw edges of both lining and outer bag before combining, so yeah, it was a day's work to complete one lined shopping bag. I am so excited because I now sew lined shopping bags the Jess way, I whipped up my hundred bags in 6 days! Thank you, thank you Jess for sharing this!

You don't know what a comfort it was for me to 'hear' that even veteran sewers take time to adjust to making a new project. I thought there was something wrong with me because my project is a messenger bag and it was taking me forever to figure it out. I've never made a bag before and I would say I am a mid-experienced sewer. And of course, everything looks easier on online tutorials. :) This bag will be my next project!

When you need to press 1/2” in for example, here is an easier way to measure for the fold: instead of marking at 1/2” and trying to fold on that line, make a mark at DOUBLE what you want (1” here) and fold the raw edge to your marked line.

I watched this then made 3 of these yesterday morning. I did my grocery shopping today and just love them. Got compliments from the person next to me at the self checkout. I folded them in thirds then rolled them up from the bottom and put an elastic around each one. I have a little fabric basket that will hold four of them. I will store them in my vehicle like that. Maybe this will help me remember to take them in the store with me. I do just love them. Here in Maine we will have to use something like this starting on Earth Day. Thanks so much for this great tutorial. I teach a sewing class and this is definitely on my list of projects to do. Thank you so much. Love your channel.

These are terrific. I get canvas upholstery remnants from the sale bin, prewash them, and combine them with quilt-weight leftovers. The size is just right, any bigger and they’d probably be too heavy when filled. Like another viewer, I add a loop so I can put them on the bag frame at the store- so helpful. And I agree, 30” is perfect for the strap length. Thanks so much, Jess!

I love this! I always heat bonded my lining to my canvas because I’m lazy, but I’m gonna give your lining a try! Your boxed corners are easier, too. What size do you cut for the bottom of the bag please?
@friedpicklechips
@friedpicklechips Жыл бұрын
@@dianehanson2678 Easy peasy! Measure the width and length of the bottom of the bag and cut your plastic mat accordingly. For your width you’ll measure 4” - remember, that is the width of the boxed corner. For the length, just measure the inside length of the finished bag. Cut the plastic mat to those measurements, and slip the cut piece of plastic mat into the bag. Push it down until it wedges into place giving your bag a flat surface on the bottom. Note, I like to very slightly round the corners of the plastic mat when cutting it so I don’t end up with sharp edges that could possibly poke through my bag in the future! Enjoy!

I really loved your tutorial. The way you explain everything made it super easy to understand. Thank you so much. I have made 6 bags in the last 2 days and have material cut for 6 more. For a slightly bigger bag with no wasted material I bought 2 - 7' lengths of material which will make 4 bags when done. I first cut them lengthwise along the fold they had on the bolt. Then I folded each in half and cut along that line. This made each piece of material approximately 22" wide x 42" long. After placing one of each piece of material together (bad sides together) I marked, folded and ironed each side so I would have two inches of the inner lining fabric to decorate the top edge of the bag where the handles would go. *** For those who prefer the look of a 4" band along the top (which I found that I prefer) buy 2 - 7' 8" lengths of material. After cutting each piece of fabric into 4 pieces, they should be approximately 22" w x 46" long. *** I followed your directions on everything else except when boxing the bottom of the bag. I preferred a bigger boxed area so I made my initial mark as 5" on each side. Thanks again and keep the videos coming!

For me, it is easier to double the ‘turn down’ amount, so if you want a 1/2 inch turned down; mark your fabric at 1 inch and align the raw edge to there & the amount of hem will be 1/2 inch. No peeking, the line can clearly seen.

Your right that’s an awesome fast & easy bag to make 👍🏼 the only thing I would do is use a dark or printed fabric for the bottom because that would bug me to make such a cute bag and have stains on it that way a printed or dark fabric will hide the stain 😱 but your’s came out very cute loved the colors 😍 I will for sure make some of these bags it would also be a great bag to but a gift 🎁 in it that your giving someone instead of those paper gift bags at least the person could use the bag after it could be part of their gift 🎁 awesome 👍🏼 Thank you for the idea ♥️

I am working on making bags for resale. I am not new to a sewing machine but am new to bag making. Yesterday I did the lining just as you did. I didn't know what I was doing but it worked. Thank you for validating my thought process. You explain so well and you have a pleasant voice that doesn't make me change the channel. You aren't too slow and show the steps at the right speed. I love these bags - simple but look good and are strong. I live in Oregon and on Jan 1, 2020 the “no plastic bags for groceries” law goes into effect so I will be making a few of these. I’m going to try the Pul lined later because I will have to order some, but I made one with oil-cloth lining which turned out great. I agree with Maryann Beck - your video is easy to follow and your voice is easy to listen to. I subscribed to your channel so I look forward to more projects.

I notice when I have a darker or busy lining, it's much harder to see what's inside. So I would vote for the light color inside, the busy stuff outside. It wouldn't' show the dirt as much. Maybe keeping it cheap, you could use denim outside and lighter cotton inside. And may I suggest, if the hubs goes shopping you gotta step back from the florals lol! I find your lining method great!, easiest I have seen! Thank you!
