I just use basting glue around the tricky parts. Works like a charm.

From my many years of experience I have found that it is better and faster to do the staystitching and clipping method. But I use a different technique when pinning from what this video shows. I put the convex piece down, face up, with the seam edge farther from me. Then I place the concave piece onto it, right sides together, pinning the areas above and below the notches first. Then between the notches, just curve the clipped portion to fit the bottom piece, pinning in place. You're not manipulating the fuller convex piece at all, just curving the other concave piece to fit it. This does work much better, in my opinion. I trim the seams after stitching, and use pinking shears so there's no need to cut notches.

Lucy, at the 6:13 mark you mention putting fullness down. The way to make it work is to lift both pieces as you sew and the feed dogs take up the slack. Give it a try.

Nice method, but so much easier to clip the front piece between the notches so it curves easily around the curve of the side front piece. Sew from the front and let the feed dogs help with any additional fullness.

I made this same blouse using a light weight linen and it turned out lovely! I always finish the seams of my garments with either serging, flat fell or French seams and was sort of stuck as to how to neaten up the finished princess seams. I chose a French seam and honestly it wasn't the best idea. I thought about serfinf it but thought it would not work, but after seeing your tutorial here I see how and why it will work for all future garments I make which will have princess seams. I truly appreciate your tutorial!!

Thanks. I've struggled matching the fabric in a princess seam with my larger bust. I eventually managed but your idea to stay stitch and then to overlock the seam after sewing is brilliant! I will try that next time and see if the larger curve makes it difficult.

They say the devil is in the details and I really find that true when it comes to sewing princess seams, especially with a full bust such as mine. I love your method for pinning around the area between the notches first to make easing the curved part easier! I will absolutely give that a try. Also-stay stitching that curve seems like another great step. I wonder if it can be done whether the pattern calls for it or not 🤔 Anyway thanks for another great video!

In my experience patterns don't say to stay stitch the seam on a princess seam. There is no reason why anyone shouldn't. Just make sure (I apologise if I am teaching Granny to suck eggs here!) the stay stitching is inside the seam allowance so it won't show on the outside. I wonder where that saying about granny and eggs came from. It is a strange one isn't it? When I was a girl I had difficulty with the little bits of fabric sticking out at the end of the seam when I open the seam I thought I must have done something wrong!

Wouldn't it be easier to baste two lines right and left of the seamline of the bulkier part, then pull the upper threads so that the fabric gathers a little bit. Afterwards you can stitch both parts together and pull the basted threads out again. But your princess seam is really nicely done.
@lunasmum6869
@lunasmum6869 3 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between gathering and easing. Gathering is just what it says but easing is making the two sides fit as though the are the same length. If you gather the fabric you run a high risk of tucks and pleats in the seam. Easing avoids this.

wonderful tutorial. Question on the overlocking: do you still clip and press prior prior to overlocking or do you go straight to overlocking (no clip) and then press?

On a lot of new machines, you can set it so that when you stop sewing the needle will always be in the down position. Have a look in your sewing machine instruction booklet to see if it's possible for your machine.

If you stop when the needle is down when you want to turn the fabric for instance it will not slip when you lift the presser foot as the needle is holding it. When you have finished the seam or whatever you are sewing you want the needle up in order to pull your work from the machine. If your machine doesn't have this, no worries. Simply turn the fly wheel until the needle is down before lifting the presser foot.

Not really because we wouldn't be able to see the effect of the easing. I agree about seeing it as we do when working ourselves but, at that angle, we wouldn't be able to see the effect. She did show us once pinned though.
