This is a super talking heavy video, so strap in it's a long ride. I made one successful mockup and one... kind of ugly mockup. But it's progress either way! I'm using the Henrician Kirtle pattern from the Tudor Tailor and McCall's 7763 pattern designed by Angela Clayton and splicing them together to make something that resembles Frau's gown.

it's so interesting to see how you go from a pattern to a mockup and then trying it on and decide what's wrong and then just know how to fix that (which has to be some kind of magical skill, because how.)!

Such an improvement between both mock-ups! The second sleeves looks waaaay better (I find that puffy sleeves of any kind are so freakin hard to accurately picture before trying them out, there's always a first disastrous version ^^' )

Yesss the first mock-up was a HOT MESS haha puff sleeves are definitely always a gamble I need to just make a bunch of patterns and take pictures of the mock-ups so I have an actual archive of them rather than guessing every time

I like the new backdrop. I think it would be hard to see a project in a darker fabric, but that is easy enough to sort out by having a lighter backdrop to use for those projects. Your hair does blend into it a bit, but I didn't notice it until you asked how we liked the backdrop. I don't really think it is a negative, and I think it might be impossible to find one color for a backdrop that worked 100% of the time. I love seeing the mock-up process! I think it is so much easier to see where the fit issues are, and to see how you go about making changes to address them. I like it when you give possible reasons for problems, then explain why you think a specific possibility is the correct thing for you based on your past experience fitting garments for your own body. Fitting is so individual, and it is easy to think that one solution works for every situation, and that just isn't true. The second mock-up looks much better, especially the shoulders. I really love the overall shape of the sleeves. I'm so excited to see the finished dress!

I love your designs! Thank you for taking the time to share your journey and letting us learn with you. An idea for helping balance the weight on your hoops is to make a structure that acts like a bum roll but supports the weight of the hoops against your hips/around your bottom. That way the cage can't rock forward. A good visual of what I'm trying to explain is in the movie "Mirror, Mirror", when the queen is getting ready for her wedding to the prince, you can clearly see the under structure of her hoops. Sorry I can't explain it better. Keep up the great work!

I'm a new subscriber happily binging all of your videos, and I just wanted to let you know I really appreciate how much detail you go into when working on the mockup fittings. Your videos are very well composed and relaxing to watch, and I feel like I learn something new with each one. I've also been working on a sakizou costume (not nearly as detailed as this one) but ran into a block a couple of years ago because my skills were not quite good enough. Now thanks to your videos, I feel much more inspired to practice historical/fantasy costuming and get back to working on it eventually. This Frau costume already looks sooo impressive, I'm sure the final gown will be stunning, but of course, take your time in posting videos. Take care!

Gosh, were those deer? I suspect you're secretly a Disney princess. The second mockup shows SO much improvement! I'd probably leave the neckline just a little bit arched, not as high as it was, just not straight. Your boyfriend seems seriously well trained! Unlike kitties.😅 I'm a bit surprised by the shape of the lower sleeves, for some reason I thought they were fitted in the illustration, it's the cuffs that were massive. You're probably aiming for a historical shape. Studio tour would be great! Give yourself breathing space and don't push yourself too hard. It's already amazing how consistently you post!
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
yes! we have lots of deer near our house, they're so cute! The neckline is going to get tons of lace so even if I cut it a little low in the fabric it'll get raised a little bit by the lace 😊 haha boyfriend tries very hard, he's definitely super helpful! the lower sleeves have a little triangular white piece that gets kind of lost against her hair, I missed it the first time I was looking at it but it's there! the cuffs are also massive on top of it tho haha

Most women have a dipped waist at the centre back. If your garment is throwing the volume to the side of the skirt try transferring the waist dip to your paþern, this should lift the skirt a 1/2 inch and bring the gather back to its correct place. For the sleev, draw two lines from the bicep seam to the wrist. Place the pattern on another piece of cardboard and cut from wrist to top leaving the top of sleve attached by a little. Spread the pieces to 1/3 the gather of the garment and sticky tap dow on both cuts. Leavel 1/3 of gather on the under arm seam, this is now your new sleeve pattern that throws the gather to the front of the sleeve rather having it at the back of the sleeve.

The mock up is beautiful! I can't wait to see what it looks like in the fashion fabric! Also, instead of weights on the hoops, you could add a tape (or ribbon) on the inside of the hoops so that it goes from side to side, crossing behind your legs (thigh-ish area b/c behind the knees will be uncomfortable and shins might trip you) will help pull the entire crinoline back so it doesn't kick out in the front.

I think the second mock-up definately looks better! And the whole process might be a bit less exciting than the fancy fabrics and embroidery and stuff, but it is super educational! I also think the background looks good, but it might be a bit dark. It is fine when you're wearing something light like the muslin, but the dark blue velvet might be hard to distinguish from the background. I would love a sewingroom tour, I'm always super curious about other people's spaces :). ah yeah definitely if I'm fitting something darker I'll switch to a lighter backdrop! I think I also want to just add more generally to the backdrop so it's more like a set than just fabric hanging back there, but anything is better than my skin tone matching the walls haha. My table is made from two ikea book shelves with wheels attached for a base, the table top is two sliding doors bolted together with a layer of homasote on top so I can pin into it, then covered in paper and a fabric backdrop! I just filmed a studio tour too so that'll go up next week 😊

I really like seeing all of your mockups and all the processes that go into the final product. It's also really nice to see what causes certain issues in a garment and how to fix them, because tailoring is hard. 😭😅 Definitely agree that poofy sleeves #2 are the superior choice. They look more balanced and less like they're trying to take over. lol

Okay first of all I love your like bullet journal style pages for Frau at the beginning. That is so cute~ I do a like costume bible/scrapbook for my costumes when I finish but the way you do it is so pretty. The way your skirt is concentrated toward the back looks good I think! I will say walking around with the train, it pools out behind you and helps with some of the weight. If I understood, you took the skirt pieces from the gown kirtle rather than the actual gown pattern? But in the actual gown pattern the skirt is literally -enormous- and they have you basically do the worlds largest cartridge pleats to deal with the fabric. So I think you're on the right track! Also! I just wanted to say, I had SUCH a hard time with the sleeve/strap placement on my gown I made from the tudor tailor too. I went through so many mockups and they still want to pull down a bit when I wear it haha. I truly don't know how the kirtle and gown are supposed to fit together ngl. I found that scooping the strap in and making the arm scye bigger did help with that though since it gave the arm more room and stopped it from pulling down as bad. (Sorry for such a long comment!!)
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
ah thank you and no worries about the long comment, I really appreciate that you took the time to say so much!! Yes I expanded the kirtle pattern to be extra big and totally forgot that the gown pattern existed but it seems to have worked out well. I never really know how to transition cartridge pleats into knife or box pleats so it's probably better this way. aah I'm glad it's not just me haha, I like their patterns a lot but they're kind of confusing how they all go together. thank you for the strap suggestion, I'll try that next time!
@akaanika

@@moth.faerie Those are my feelings exactly. The patterns are really useful but sometimes its bizarre how they go together and don't seem like theyre made for a real human being LOL I wish we could compare hem lengths on the final gown skirts, I'd be interested to see who ended up with the bigger skirt haha Either way though it looks amaaaaaazing and I can't wait to see it all done. @@spacec0w733 aw thank you thats so sweet! hm depending on the type of skirt you might need a petticoat to prevent that, or your hem might not be stiff enough. if you add horsehair braid to your hem that'll keep it standing farther away from your body. if you have a petticoat that's the right length that will also hold it out from your legs

I'm always of the opinion that you should focus more on your sewing, than creating content for us to watch. If a video needs to be pushed back, push it back. I know it messes with the algorithm, but satisfaction with a project and piece of mind of not meeting deadlines for posting is more important IMO.
