Join me as I finish sewing my housewife (or huswif or hoswijf or, well, you get the picture) sewing kit from @sewstine and recite poetry in Middle English and Old English as I think about the origins of this interesting word and where it turns up in older versions of English.
You can support Sewstine's amazing embroidery work by purchasing items or embroidery files from her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/SewStine

Great job Missy ❤ Could you please make a video on the old English word for a female cat apart from Molly, Queen or Dam which has been lost now?

I wrote my thesis on history of translation and learnt a lot about the things you mentioned in this video, so this was really a pleasure to listen as well as to watch! You are awesome! 👏🤩💕

I recently got some donated fabric that I want to turn into a huswif too. But I want to make it pretty with some cross stitch adornments, so it might still take a while until I get to it. Fun fact: German (my native tongue) has used the word "wîp" or later "Weib" until the 16th century as the term for a woman. Weib is pronounced like "vibe" and shares a root with the English "wife". While a "wîp" or "Weib" was a common woman, a "frouwe" was a noble one. Over time, those words went through the euphemism treadmill and "Frau", the modern variant of "frouwe", became the standard polite adress for any woman, while "Weib" became derogatory. (Although it can be used in an appreciative way in certain contexts.) That means that a new term for a noble woman had to be found, and this became the French loanword "Dame" in the 17th century. It's pronounced "DAH-meh". Nowadays, "Frau" is the German equivalent to "Mrs." and "Miss" and a general term for "woman". Well, and the German word for "house" is "Haus" which is pronounced basically the same. So, the housewife as in "a woman who is a homemaker" is the "Hausfrau".

I loved watching this video- it was like the next best thing to hanging out with you and I've been missing that a lot! I am here for overlapping circles of nerdery! Do you ever listen to John McWhorter's Lexicon Valley podcast? It's about linguistics in general, not historical linguistics, but I think you'd love it.
