Margo’s patterns are incredibly detailed. I love that she gives the historical method as well as more modern instructions. She makes these periods accessible to even adventurous beginners.She’s also an all around nice human. This turned out lovely. The pattern of the fabric is just gorgeous. I don’t even want to think about how much something like that would cost in silk.

I think this is lovely, you look so pretty and ethereal, and I think the fullness looks amazing since it is going to be worn alone. That layered support gives me some serious ideas as I've walked away from underwire bras. I am so impressed with this whole project and what I learned watching it. That gingham trick! Brilliant.

A beautiful gown and a beautiful job. I love the sleeves and how they tie instead of being sewn into the shoulder. Just lovely. I believe I'd love it on me in a very thin thin fabric; thick fabric gives me the feelings of crowded... but this is gorgeous.

Oh My Gods! Gorgeous! And using the gingham to do cartridge pleating is Genius!! I had gotten some Tiger Tape after watching Dixie DIY use it for cartridge pleats, but the gingham makes more sense because you can use it for a facing, too. And considering the fabric was probably something you needed. I wish I knew why such gorgeous brocades and jacquards are now mostly made with plastic fibers instead of more natural fibers. I guess it's a cost factor. Personally I hate plastic fabrics, but I will probably need to use them at some time anyway.

I know, it's such a shame that natural fibers in these styles are pretty much out of the realm of affordability for us mere mortals! We saw some incredible silk damask fabrics in Italy that were about $900 yard!

I too bought some tiger tape (imported from a quilting place, v expensive) after watching Dixie use it. If it ever runs out I’ll be using Gingham - genius!

Another cheat for perfectly aligned cartridge pleats is to stitch on curtain ruching tape.

Oh I've never heard of that! Is that something you can buy at a regular fabric store or is it something you'd need to find at a specialty decorator shop?

@@DamesalaMode I would imagine you can buy it at a regular fabric store. I've never actually bought any, but I have seen it used in the skirt part of a 1600's dress that was used as a costume in a play.

thank you. i have admired the design for a long time & truly love this dress. but your explanations and visual clues how to do each step is truly brilliant. and very very helpful. am a visual learner and this is amazing.. (its the first time ive ever seen how to do lacing rings! and have had trouble with cartridge pleating before. again thank you. its very encouraging to actually think i might be able to make one :) also what kind of head cover would one wear with a dress like this??

Have you posted anywhere about how you came up with your original bodice pattern? I'm noticing that the cut of the bodice makes all the difference re: fit and authenticity, and I need any info I can get so I don't cut mine wrong.

No, I made up this pattern a few years ago before I was doing much KZfaq stuff, but I recommend the Margo's Pattern I link to in the description - it's very similar to the one I draped!

Your tutorials are so good! This is going to be my first historical-based costume! It’s going to be fantasy but I am using the camicia, gamurra, and giornia as inspo! I’m making a duct tape dress form but I’m not sure what to wear as we tape. Since there aren’t stays and there support is built into the garment, should I wear a modern bra so everything is in the right place as we tape?

Yay I'm so glad it helped! Yes, I would recommend wearing a modern bra for that purpose since your bustline is pretty close to natural with a little bit of boost 😊

I think either a yellow/golden tone or something closer to the teal blue of the ribbons! It would also look wonderful with a totally opposite color like a coral pink for an excellent contrast!

Did the wide seam allowance you got after matching the motifs give you any trouble with the cartridge pleating? The fabric I'm working with, once I match everything up I'll have 3-3/4" seam allowances at three different seams. It's drapery weight damask and I'm worried about keeping the pleats regular. Let me say this video has been extremely helpful. I'm basing my gamurra off Period Patterns No. 41, but I'm following your technique (and that of a couple other Costubers) for the assembly.

No, not really! I just pleated it right into the cartridge pleats. They may be a little thicker but it wasn't enough to really notice! Glad the video is helpful!

For a women with more modest bust a 30 band and 34' bust , how doth a kirtle keep up one's breast? Im new to making them and im struggling to not smash and look like I bound as the fullness in upper bust hath left me. many I see making them are the larger chested set .. and its different! Reply
