Sewing An 1890s Meets 1980s Victorian Shirtwaist Dress (and studying true Edwardian sewing methods)

In which I use Rosenbleet's Perfect System of Ladies Garment Cutting to draft a stylistically 1980s shirtwaist dress (sort of based on a Laura Ashley pattern), and investigate true Victorian sewing methods used on extent garments from my archive.

I made that Laura Ashley pattern in the 1980s. It was dark teal corduroy and it was such a warm, cozy winter dress.

I’ve been enjoying so much of your content, but I have to say that this one particularly tickled my fancy. As a teen in the 80’s I was a fan of the sweet Laura Ashley aesthetic but I reveled in the rebellious 90’s. Your design and styling hit a magical sweet spot.

Can't really say how happy seeing your industry machine made me. 🙂 It's the same model as my Nanna and mum used in the factories. I've not seen one since I was about 6. But yer they're always set to have your fingers off speeds. Hope the servo works.

It is really interesting to watch you create. Your sewing machine is a workhorse without a computer and useless settings. Give me a workhorse any day. I don’t want to have to figure out numbers and letter combos to sew a button hole with a computer.

That was really nice to watch. Thank you for sharing this with us. Laura Ashley put me in a time warp to the eighties. I actually have a very similar pattern to yours. Seeing what others do often gets me out of creative ruts or inspires me to take a big leap on the next project.
