Excellent video demonstration of how a stitch is made by a sewing machine. You simplified a very complicated process as much as possible, so most people should be able to understand the process. Less well made videos still made the process seem too causing to grasp. I had to practically meditate about the mechanics of the process to finally get it with earlier video explanations. However with your video and explanation, you explanation is the best I’ve seen anywhere. Thank you for making this tool for others to grasp.

@callalilyquilts4605

The bobbin case (on some machines called an inner rotary hook) floats (rides in a rotary hook without being attached, held so it doesn't spin) and the top thread actually passes around it to loop around the bobbin thread, which forms the stitch. The take-up lever pulls the slack out, pulling the top thread tight, and as the feed dogs move the fabric forward, it pulls the thread out for the next loop. On most newer machines, the rotary hook actually goes around twice to every one time the needle comes down. I'm trying to create a video that will show exactly how all this works, hopefully a little more detailed than this video, but this is still a very good basic explanation of what's taking place.

I still don’t understand either. If the bobbin thread is a loop and the upper thread tension is loosened to make a loop for the bobbin hook to grab, how do two loops of thread become straight and not tangled? The video needs to show slowly how the race hook mechanism uses the upper thread loop to create a stitch. Slow motion and more magnification is required to explain how this works to make the stitch.
@user-bj1dq7zh4o
@user-bj1dq7zh4o 3 жыл бұрын
The bobbin thread actually stays straight and the upper thread makes a loop around it. Needle has a groove on its backside. The tip of the hook runs past it and gets a hold of the thread. Rotation swirls the thread around the bobbin case and the bobbin thread. The video doesn’t mention tension spring between tension plates and the take up lever. In all sewing (lock stitch) machines the upper thread has to run through the tension plates, the spring and the take up lever in this order to create decent stitching.

I used to think there is a little man inside the machine who twists the threads to form a stitch, and he had to be fed with oil. Well at least that is how my mum tried to explain to me when I asked her how the eff does the machine stitches so beautifully unlike hand stitch is all over. Mr singer is the little man inside. But now I know the two threads one from top and one from bottom have to be twisted against one another and then passed back out from the same hole and then the next one and twisted and back out and then the next hole in and twisted and back out again, the bobbin is a device that kind of makes that twist. In other words the thread on the bobbin gets passed through the top loop, so every turn the bobbin makes that twist through the loop of the top thread, the loop is formed by a fact that when the needle goes through the cloth, it drags the top thread with it, and when it is drawn out the thread remains behind and forms a loop because the thread cannot come back out again due to friction stopping it from coming out but the needle comes out as it is smoother and has no friction and is driven out as it is solid unlike the thread is soft and bends, the bend creates a loop which is then grabbed by the hook on the bobbin rotor, which by rotating through the loop causes the twist and stitch

This otherwise nice diagram shows the needle thread loop passing all the way around the bobbin shuttle. In the real world, the shuttle is mounted somehow, not magically suspended in air, so how does the thread passing behind the shuttle not get hung up on the mounting? Please, somebody, post another diagram. Meanwhile, I may be have to take the shuttle out of my machine and take a look at the housing.

+Edith Agoff I got it. The bobbin actually is floating freely. It is inside a casing, which is also the bobbin hook, The thread goes inside the casing, around the bobbin. Whats the brown thing? And how does it magically attach to the spinning thing each time?
@clieding
@clieding 5 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, the “brown” thing is thread from the bobbin that gets stitched together with the thread from the needle. Most of us are familiar with seeing a spool of thread on top of a sewing machine but unless one sews or was shown by ones mother as I was as a little boy, one wouldn’t know there is another spool of thread under the sewing platform. [It gets loaded before one begins to sew. It looks like a funny little metal wheel]. I have watched this video several times and even though I have a good notion of how it works, I sure can’t make sense of it from this animation. Don’t feel bad for not understanding- it is very poorly shown.

How I wish that the world still existed with such analog technology, so that common people could spend their time inventing. I think that the brain power which went into creating many of the 19th and 20th century inventions was superior to today’s in many ways. Also, and this is a big also, such analog devices allow common people to repair and reproduce them. Today’s average joe can’t repair or recreate the modern creations, such as smartphones or KZfaq. Back then, with a few bobbins and levers, some know-how and enough time to spare, such involved processes were available to all. I think what I’m saying is, I long for the more romantic age where seemingly magical constructions like the sewing machine were being invented. Maybe one day we will return to that age of mechanical curiosity and innovation.
