Sewing Minis: Tips for Sewing Sequin Fabric

In this episode, we show you some of the basic tips for sewing sequin fabric. This video is geared towards fabric that has sequin sew on to it, not glued on to it. If your fabric has sequin glued on, you sew it like any other fabric, but you'll want to use a good quality needle and a walking foot.
Sewing sequin fabric takes a ton of time, but there are some simple tricks to save you time, like only removing sequin within the path of the seam line.
If you're sewing a sequin garment, expect to sew some kind of lining, as sequin fabric will irritate the wearer's skin.

I made a sequin jacket for a DJ. I used my industrial machine and I didn’t have to remove any sequins! Clean up was still a mess!

I just bought the most beautiful victorian silver/ grey sequinned fabric. I hate to sew but it was something I couldn't pass up. I'm thinking hand sewing will be best after watching your video. Thanks for the tips!!

Thanks for this! I’m making a cape for a costume and one of the fabrics I’m using is a sparkly purple one with large sequins. Pretty different from the one in the video, but the tips are still very helpful.

I have sequin fabric that has tiny sequins all over and is a stretch fabric! Do I still have to remove along the seam lines? I am planning a full length dress! Thanks

Hi, I'm looking to use a sequin fabric as table runners and table covers (for wedding reception). Since it's tulle-based, can I cut the fabric and use them without hemming the edges? Would it fray like other normal fabric?

What is the best way to sew in a zip on sequin material??

I bought a sequin skirt, but I would like to take it in a little from the sides and shorten it a few inches. Can I just take it in normally, like put it on the wrong way, pinch the extra, put in needles, sew it and cut the excess off? Do you have any tips for me? I'd really appreciate it:)

Can you use heat bond tape to hem a sequin dress?

Hi! Honestly, I have never tried. I would think the heat would damage the sequins, but I'm not entirely sure. Let us know if it works!

It can definitely be tricky to work with. Unfortunately, really the only option is to use your seam ripper and carefully pick out the stitches. If you lost some sequins, it will either have a small area missing sequins or, depending on the type of sequins on the fabric, you can individually sew sequins pieces back on your project-filling any gaps.
