I'm not someone who has an out of the mainstream style of dress but my husband certainly does. He grew up as a working cowboy on a cattle ranch in Utah so he wore Western clothes everyday because that's what was practical. When we bought a good suit for our wedding, we went with a Western cut suit. But...he also likes to embrace his Scottish heritage and wear, you guessed it, kilts! Apparently there can be ridiculous gatekeeping with that too. But he's a cowboy in a kilt...and he just doesn't care what anyone else thinks. And I'm glad of it because he can really rock that tartan!

This dress is GORGEOUS! I also agree about the gatekeeping-it's the worst thing about any sort of community. As for the bead organising, I would love to watch that! You could even do a Q&A voiceover or something id you're worried about it being "too boring" otherwise?? Though organisation videos makes my little virgo heart happy regardless haha

I just want to say that you create incredible clothes and I love your narration style, when I have migraines and I need to stop screen time, I always go to your Chanel because I can visualize everything your are doing without seeing, your explain very well each step, I can't count how many times I took a migraine medicine put your vídeos on the cellphone and closed my eyes, your calming voice made me sleep to in insomnia nights

I love helping her rack up view counts by rewatching her videos has I'm falling a sleep for the same reason. Plus she doesn't add loud music in-between when she is talking so the volume doesn't jump dramatically throughout the video. 🤗🥰🤣

I absolutely love this fabric! It's so rare to see unicorns that are not just cutesy drawings (although there's nothing wrong with them!). Also, I happily watched you talk for an hour about your nailpolishes and unicorno figurines, I'll gladly watch you organize your beads!

I trick I was taught by my aunt years ago for threading elastic with a safety pin: if you turn it around with the “latch” towards yourself and the “hinge” pointing away, it’s much less likely for the pin to open, since your hand is holding it closed. And if it does pop open, the point isn’t going into the fabric, so you can close it just fine!

I'm always amazed at how patient and detail oriented you are. It really shows in all of your garments that you have a ton of knowledge, patience and discipline. It's a joy to watch you work and even though we have quite different tastes I always love seeing what you make. Also I really appreciate how much you explain what you're doing, it really helps me follow along and it's so interesting to hear the reasons why you're doing certain things as a beginner seamstress. I'd love a calm bead organizing video! Maybe with a voice over talking about how you organize your sewing supplies in general or how you got into sewing and what your goals are etc. would be nice :)

I can't remember for certain, but I feel like it's been a while since you've done a Q and A, if you're up for it, maybe you could do a voice over answering questions while we watch you organize?

The thing about lolita fashion gatekeeping most often comes down to people new into fashion often buy cheap "replicas" of Japanese brand pieces, and support art-theft which is (for good reasons) looked down upon. In the past handmade things and indie brands were viewed as less-than, but nowadays the attitudes have definitely shifted and good materials and construction get loads of praise 😊

Absolutely gorgeous dress! I also love the colour and the fact that it has unicorns makes it even better. Also I would totally watch a sequin sorting video! I also agree that having a label like cottage core or historocal inspired can limit someones creativity. Maybe it's me but over the last video's I noticed you've been choosing more vibrant, less "period appropriate" fabrics (hello hot pink robe a la Française). I really love that! Edit: spelling

The dress looks like an early style of Hollywood's interpretation of a mid evil dress. So all in all it would make a great Hollywood themed Halloween costume. You did an awesome job even with the zipper debacle. Always love watching your tutorials Angela, always!!

At Joanns I got a metal bodkin with a tiny metal knob at the tip and I thread the elastic through the hole in the bottom and stitch it down in a loop. Love my bodkin it gently goes through anything. Also have two plastic bodkins with soft plastic points that work very well. They might be better for fabric like this because they are more flexiable.

It is a very cool fabric but personally the trim is what fascinated me. I dont know why but trim intimidates the heck out of me but seeing your work for this project makes it seem a bit less mythical, a bit more in reach. YES to everything you said about aesthetics! I personally do like cottagecore and dark academia just as inspiration, but it makes me sad to think that there are still people who think that you have to 'conform' to the aesthetic like no! It's about finding things you like! I watched some videos about Lolita fashion a few years ago because I liked the look of it and the amount of rules just made me absolutely sick (the amount of drama as well btw). So glad I found the historical costuming side of KZfaq instead!

Also the plus side of aesthetic 'names' is that you can find things you like easier on sites like Pinterest, and discover things you didn't even know you liked. For me I never thought as many people would be obsessed with old libraries and old books as I am!

Just popping in to say locate a vintage bodkin. All rounded edges and seriously the best little tool made. I found one at a antique shop and it my "new" favorite. Nothing comes undone like the sliding clip things. Metal and does not bend or warp. No points or anything to get caught or snag. Very much worth finding and getting. Will last forever too.

I love this fabric! It's nice to see a "serious" and "adult" unicorn fabric! About the velvet: you don't say how you pressed it, but I always iron it face down on top of a bath towel or piece of scrap velvet or a professional needle board. If I'm using a hot iron, I make sure I have lots of steam so I hopefully won't melt the fabric. I'm very happy that you are pleased with the appearance of your velvet, but you might need these tips next time. I love the way your dress came out; it's so cute!

ITS Beautiful , Angela it wouldn't be an A. Clayton Design without the glitz and sparkle , thats the main reason we love your channel you make the more sparkliest creations and they make us happy. So no the leaves aren't too sparkly they're your trade mark . Its like my glass designs or my wooden boxes it wouldn't be my design without every mm of the box covered in glitter and trimmed in crystals it just wouldn't be we are the sparkle designers . Thats why brides love the glass ware i make ... the sparkle they all dream of that sparkly moment i wish i could sew like you , id make the shiniest gown the world ever saw lol

Yay. I know I’m “supposed” to use brown pattern paper developing new patterns … but i’ve never found that it works with my creative process. I am 100% on team tracing paper. So happy to see it being important part of the process for this dress. :) If the off chance that anyone is curious as to why, one big reason is that I’ve never been a huge fan of slashing techniques, as in SBA/FBA, adding gathers and the like. Instead, maybe because I’m weird or something, I prefer to do a lot of those things either mathematically or by repositioning previous generations of the same design underneath the current tracing. Among other things, this message maintains good fluidity and makes truing up the edges and darts extra simple and generally a pretty minor part of the whole process. I know my instructors would shriek in horror at hearing this, but many times it’s not even necessary to remove, and then re-add the seam allowances. Sshh - don’t tell.

I'm right with you. I learned how to slide and pivot from the Sew/Fit method back in the 80s and it's great. Using paper I can see through is vital to this process so I've never used brown or white paper, even though it's cheaper.

I think too many people get trapped in the idea of doing things the "proper" way. But think of it this way: if no one deviated from what's proper, there would be no innovation! Do what works for you, take bits of inspiration from wherever you find it, and don't worry too much about what your instructors would say. 😁💜

For the bead video i’d love to hear your wildest dreams and wishes for all those beads. What are you imagining them onto? And where will they realistically end up on? You make loads of creative decisions and I love hearing your thought process. I don’t ever use beads and/or sequins so I can’t imagine them on anything if that makes sense? The value of the video for me would increase a lot knowing what you are imagining for these beads! Lots of love to you and all the beautiful things you make (and of course the doggos)

The print and the cut of the dress really remind me of an old animated movie called The Last Unicorn I used to watch on repeat as a kid (to the point I broke the cassette and we had to transfer it to a DVD). I loved the movie BECAUSE it wasn't about cutesy unicorns, it instead had dark elements that weren't hidden to "protect the kids." I could totally see young Molly in this dress, waiting for days to see a unicorn as a young maiden.

I really loved your spech. Luckily for me i am naturally greedy and curious so i always loved multiple styles and wore them all depending on my mood. I would always think “how do people stick to one style like that?” I would see women with their whole homes/closets designed around one thing. There isnt anything wrong with that if you like it but I could never do it and never even tried, lol. I have too many facets that I want to express and shamelessly display them as I see fit. All it does is show your creativity, I think. Its a good thing.

This is such a fun dress! And very much the intersection of girly, vintage and whimsical that you capture so well. I'd love to see a bead organising video! I love organising and re-organising even my own button stash so it would be fun. But if you wanted to add a 'concept' to a voiceover, maybe you could do a video telling a story you really enjoy over the top- perhaps from a vintage book you life that is in the public domain (pride and prejudice etc) or a the life of a historical figure you find interesting? either for their life or as style inspiration. There are so many little known stories of historical fashion icons, and especially women - that it could be cool to share them- if you know any. (can also justify a wikipedia/research rabbit hole too if you wanted?)

Love hearing your rant about labels and I totally agree. Gatekeeping doesn't really help anyone. Being accurate helps, sure, and I agree that using terms help when you're trying to look for something. All that said, wear what you want and look fierce doing it! "glittery bunny slippers go with everything" wish I had known that when I was young.( I'm 58). I grew up in a traditional family in a traditional area. If you dressed differently, people made fun of you. I'm glad things have changed so much that people keep their mouths shut if they don't like the outfit. "You be you" is a wonderful thing. The dress reminds me of early Hollywood's take on period clothing. The color and print are very you and totally lovely. I always find that putting a disappointing project away for awhile makes me like it better. All the flaws aren't so in your face.

Very late to the party, but I do feel like if anyone wanted to do an Esmeralda or Mirabel inspired outfit, your explanation of how you did the tiered ruffles and the gold leaf trim together could be very helpful!!! (And by anyone, I mean me, I want to make my niece a Mirabel inspired skirt and I feel much more confident about it now having watched this video!!!

I genuinely love the dress on you .. the "leather" look waistband, the trim .. everything. It's flattering too. Hmm .. the zipper .. bummer. OK, so I don't know if this is allowed in the vintage world but, personally, I really like invisible zips. They disappear into the design, look less chunky, and are much EASIER to install. You do not need the special foot to install. When you unpick the old zip, I think that strips of very light weight fusible interfacing would stabilize the fabric edges and any holes from working with the fragility of the fabric.

Joannes has fairly inexpensive needle boards for ironing velvet. They are kind of small but work great if you don’t want to damage your fabric.

The dress is super cute!!! I had a similar problem once with a very thin fabric and a zipper that ruined the whole thing 😪. In the end I had to completely remove it and turn it into a skirt with an elastic waist band instead. I used that skirt for years, until it literaly fell apart...so if everything else fails you could maybe try that. The fabric is absolutely wonderful, so best of luck with salvaging this project.

I agree with you totally on the 'rules' bit... the labeling. I am an older person and when I was young we wore what is called Cottage core now. We were vampire goth before such things had labels. We wore things that would be considered bounding now back then too. For me, now it feels odd to wear my 'style' because the impression is that I am someone who it 'trying to be young' when it is just being what I have always been. It sucks, honestly. As to your dress, it is gorgeous. I would have loved seeing more about the bodice structure.

The color of the fabric is gorgeous something between purple beets and fuchsia flowers, really gorgeous and it draped beautifully. But you could see has slinky it was, slidding all over the place! but I love how you solve problems and you just persevere and the hat was brilliant . You looked beautiful in it. Alway entertained here. How are the dogs? Would live to see your beads video. You could talk about anything. Just pleasant to visit here. Thank you.

I love the colors! I especially like the serious unicorns, they are so hard to find. I may have just been sent down a rabbit hole with those colors . . . I have some fabric like the darker one, but don't I have any that vibrant of hot pink --oh, and then what shall I make? the possibilities - - - - - But first, I need to match the pink. Yes, wear what you want, mix it up!

I completely agree with not limiting oneself based on style labels! Also that gatekeeping sucks! I wear what brings me joy, which happens to range somewhere from historically inspired high waisted styles to a full length Totoro hoodie dress that I made! Also, Irregular Choice is my FAVOURITE shoe brand, but alas, I have a manky foot that just cannot get into them! 😭 One day, hopefully! The dress is gorgeous, but the way, I'm certain my 7 year old daughter will lose her mind over it! Edit: oh and yes to the bead organising!

As i understand it the best pressing cloth for velvet is more velvet or a terrycloth , so the piles support eachother and dont get crushed. Haven't actually had call to try it though!

I was skeptical about the ironed velvet (cue childhood memories of meltedold furniture) but then it was perfect. The dress is so cute but damn that zip!!

I love how many sewers on youtube are just casually mentioning that body shape and sizes are going to change over the years, so you can't just assume that a measurement you took a year ago is the same measurement today. A lot of people grow up thinking that once you get to a certain age that this is the body you're supposed to have till you suddenly get old and bent over in the last couple of years of life. Fortunately we'll always be changing and thus always getting to try new styles of clothing as time marches on. I'm excited to be able to dress like a Golden Girl!

Idea: A beautiful girl with green hair wakes up every day in a different "core". Each core is dominated by gate-keeper-Trolls! She realizes that this is like ground hog day, and she must find a way to break the spell so she can choose her own aesthetic for every day! (If the Trolls are represented by large paper dolls hung on a line they can burst into flame to signal the breaking of the spell.) The only way to break the spell is to sort out a massive pot of beads/sequins into craft organizers! With the spell broken, she can now walk into her closet and make her own decisions about wardrobe!
