I have watched this video a few times. I finally remade my bodice block patterns and sleeve for woven fabrics, I used your information to fix my sleeve fit issues and bodice changes. I understood what you were saying after the first time I watched a few years ago. It helped me so much for my knit blocks. You have really helped me understand that I could design and create my own block patterns, that will fit me. And you gave me the courage to work at it until I am satisfied. Your videos are timeless and motivating. They are a great extension of you. Thank you so much. Designing and making my own patterns is doable because of you, your great videos and patterns. Your teaching skills are excellent. And your content is spot on. I am always enthralled with your design and sewing skills.

Thank you so much Peggy for making all of your years of training and knowledge available for free. I have learned so much from your videos that it's given me confidence to feel that I can experiment with pattern changes and customizing for myself and end up with a well fitting garment that I really like. My friends comment constantly on what I wear. Your videos are excellent training for helping home sewers have fun with sewing. Thanks again!!!

Peggy...I have spent years sewing and avoiding armholes at every opportunity. Yesterday I watched your video and at last...you so clearly demonstrated and explained the different (4) kinds of armholes. I finally feel I have the knowledge and courage to tackle armholes. Thank you so much for sharing all your fantastic knowledge and sewing experiences. Trudie DeSanto

Thank you so much Peggy, for explaining this to all of us. I used to sew for my children when they were young. By the time my daughter started 1st grade, she had turned into a tomboy, since she had an older and younger brothers. I tried sewing for myself, but could never get the neck, armholes or sleeves to fit. Everything was way too large, so I quit. Now with all these KZfaq videos out, I've found you. You explain everything in a way that we can all understand. I'm having to relearn a lot, but am hoping by the time I recover from my surgery I will have watched all your videos and and understand it enough to make one outfit for myself! That's my goal 🥅!

Thank you Peggy, great tutorial. I was wondering how to adjust and you have answered my questions. Love watching your tutorials so appreciative of all your hard work. I had a wonderful mother who encouraged us to sew and I made my first garment (skirt shorts and a holter top) when I was 7 (about 46 years ago) with zipper and buttonholes. Unfortunately I as I got older I could never work out how to fit a pattern to my body shape....that is until now :-). A huge thank you

Hi Paggy, thank you very much for this wonderful video. I have a question and I hope you will help me to understand. How can I draw a sleeve, if I don't have any sleeve. I made my own sloper, the armhole was a big problem. Throug your explanation, I copied an armhole, which I like from my old cloth. But the cloth don't have any sleeve.

@katejones9046
@katejones9046 6 ай бұрын
The distance between the underarm seam, front and back notches, and shoulder point (the dot) all need to be the same for the armhole and its matching sleeve. An adjustment that affects one will need to be reflected on the other.

Hi, I set in sleeves to an armhole that is good. I hand basted along the seam allowance to make sure it was good and also comfortable, and they were perfect, but once I actually sewed them, they were tight. Will trimming or notching fix that, or why is there a difference between basted sewn and machine sewn? I don't want to trim in case I need to re-do...any advice?

It is the amount of loose fabric beyond your body measurements. For example, a leotard has no ease and a caftan has a lot of ease. It is an element of style and personal preference.

You should be using the sleeve pattern that came with the armhole that you are using. You should not be trying to draft your own. This is not what this is about. Hope that helps. Peggy

but if you lower the armhole, because it is too tight, it must mean you have to alter the top of the sleeve??

@katejones9046 6 ай бұрын
Measure on your bodice the distance from the underarm seam to both the front notch and the back notch. Make sure your sleeve pattern is the same. Make sure you take into account the seam allowances. You may need a different sized sleeve or need to alter your current sleeve to match.

I like the idea of the favourite sleeve template, but how do I make a sleeve that fits it? I thought that would also be covered in the video but it isn't. So am still confused about the sleeve.
@katejones9046
@katejones9046 6 ай бұрын
You're better off finding an armhole from a specific pattern and use the sleeve that goes with it. If you alter the pattern's armhole a bit to be perfect for you, then you make the corresponding change to the sleeve. Then you have a set that goes together. She is saying you need a perfect armhole for wovens, knits, and jackets. (And the corresponding sleeve for each.)

Love your approach to patterns. Watched this video, but found it rather confusing when it came to the demo. I get how to trace the arm hole to create the template. However, when you were demonstrating how to use it on another pattern, you did so in a woven blouse pattern. This gave the impression that you could interchange the arm holes from knit to woven. Shouldn't it just be knit to knit? We would need to go through the same process with a woven garment, producing a template that could be used on other woven garments. Woven to woven. We would then have two separate templates, unless I'm missing something.

What do you use to make copies of your patterns? Or just patterns. I go to a hobby, craft or sewing store and say I saw this video online. On TV they ask? No, KZfaq. You never heard of KZfaq? They have the material they use to make copies. They say, um no we dont have any fabric or paper like that. Well, it exists somewhere so. Right now I am using poly mill I find in the hardware section of Walmart.
@nancy9478

Go to the crafts section at Walmart and look where they have the bolts of interfacing. They sell a woven mayerial for pattern tracing that I use all the time. It looks and feels like heavy interfacing and is easier to use than paper, as it is see thru and flexible but very durable.
@katejones9046

You can use any kind of tracing paper or even parchment paper from the grocery store. Card stock, cardboard, anything would work. There is special pattern paper that some fabric stores carry, but it isn't necessary.

Silhouette Patterns I got that but if I'm adjusting the armhole of any other pattern how can I adjust the sleeve...
@karikech
@karikech 7 жыл бұрын
You don't need to adjust the sleeve, because you use the sleeve that went with the armhole template you made. For example you take the sleeve and armhole from #195 the sweater set, then trace that armhole onto another pattern (for example #600 the classic blouse). You ignore the sleeve from 600 and use the sleeve from 195. 195 is my goto sleeve for all knit patterns - I actually keep it out constantly and don't even cut out the sleeve of any new knit pattern I buy. Hope that helps.

EVERY TIME I sew set in sleeves they feel like they are sewed in backwards and never work for me. I don't know what the problem is. It's usually feels like it's pulling and sewed in backwards. STRANGE, because RTW never feels this way. Any thoughts????
@katejones9046
@katejones9046 6 ай бұрын
You could be sewing the left on the right side, etc. You have to cut a specific right sleeve and a different left sleeve. You have to be sure to match the notches and dots. If the bodice width is too wide (and to a lesser degree too narrow), it can cause the sleeves to pull. The armhole depth can be off too. Measure a top in similar fabric and compare the measurements to what you are sewing. Hope that helps.
