I put away my 'purple thang' when I got my byAnnie's stiletto. It's been a game-changer for me. It's not slick, nothing slips from under it. The stiletto is faintly 'barbed'. It grabs material and allows me to hold binding to bags while going around corners. And if I can do that, holding down some general sewing, like you're showing, would be a snap. If you don't mind buying from someone else, give it a try, Jen. I love this new way of doing cathedral windows, by the way.

I have made cathedral window quilts with denim and I can see how this would be so much easier to do. I work with a lot of first responders and military and make quilts for them. This would be awesome to add to my arsenal. This is just an FYI, for anyone who struggles with static cling in their craft room like I do. I noticed you holding your thread before you start sewing, I do that as well to keep nesting on the first few stitches but my thread always stayed on my fingers and it gets in my way. I keep a dryer sheet handy and just rub my fingers on it and to keeps that from happening.

I always used a really wide zigzag. Put my needle down between two opposite corners and did a really dense stitch for about 5 - 7 stitches. Repeat with the opposing corners. Makes a small but neat cross on the back. Fray check or something similar should definetly be used to make sure the stitches don’t unravel with washing or long use.

Practicing first is always a great idea! SInce the stitching shows on the rolled over edges- the stitch length is up to you! We think a shorter stitch length looks cute but it really is your choice :)

I’ve taught myself to make the longest running stitch where I want my fold to be. I don’t have to run to the iron for every fold over. Easy to finger press it if needed. Easier folds when “perforated”. Also when I intent to leave an opening to turn something right side out I pre-stitch just shy of the seam so that when I turn it I know right where to sew it closed also acts as a stay stitch to keep opening from stretching out.... also gives me security of closure if I decide to leave a bigger opening to turn. Do not lock or back stitch so you can pull the thread out... if it doesn’t show don’t worry about it if matching threads. I use my “stay stitching” for preliminary trials Incase I need to adjust. I’d rather go through yards of tread than get out the seam ripper.

When making a quilt, would it make it stronger and look better to put a backing on and doing the window stitching as the quilting to show on the back?
@ShabbyFabrics

It wouldn't necessarily make it stronger - however, it would be lovely to see the stitching on the back of the window shapes!

I have watched this over and over. Ive got a pack of 10” squares. I do my seams on both side as shown, but when I nest my seams to sew the other sides it bunches up and I’ve got all these puckers on it and it’s not laying flat. Do I need to trim my nesting seams or what am I doing wrong at that point?

Hi Linda! When sewing initially, your project will not lay flat. You'll want to sew parts of the seam, readjust, and keep sewing. Please let us know if you have any other questions! I have to say, this method does look easier than your other video! I want to make a blanket out of this beautiful pattern but how would I quilt it? Just stitch in the ditch or re stitch my lines to secure backing and batting? I don't want to FMQ because I feel it would ruin the the whole "window effect". Thanks and love your videos!

Brianna Castillo I thought about this too. I think stitching around the squares would work - easier that trying to stitch over the curves again. You would be stitching through the little squares so would have to coordinate. I'd love to know if you do this and how it turns out. I was thinking shabby chic florals for a baby girl quilt and the stitching would fade into the florals...

Teresa Randall I'm glad you said you commented! I think that would be so much easier, thank you! I've been searching for some fabrics recently, looking for some nice combinations, and I had my eye on some nice colorful florals as well! Have a nice day!

Because this is a small project I might hand stitch the curves instead of using the machine. If by machine, I might try using clear thread and a small hem stitch so the stitching would be less noticeable.

I just watched this fabulous video and caught that you said you usually don't use steam when quilting. Years ago I saw many times that 'steam is your friend.' Why don't you use steam when quilting? (Just curious) Thank you!
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 5 жыл бұрын
Jen found some distortion happening when she used steam while quilting which caused her blocks to become misshaped or mis-sized. We do use it. sometimes, depending on the project, but not often. It certainly can be your friend, though! - Morgan

@@ShabbyFabrics Good to know, thanks! I will definitely be aware of that possibility as I quilt. I haven't noticed it in the past, but I'm not a perfectionist like Jen seems to be. That probably means I won't win any ribbons - yet. But I will probably become better the more I watch the Shabby Fabrics videos. 👍😊
