Shachung monastery is a stunning monastery perched high atop a cliff face looking over the Yellow River in Qinghai Province. This was the monastic home to Tsongkapa who went on to found the yellow hat, or Gelugpa Sect, of Tibetan Buddhism. In this video we explore Tsongkapa's life and influence on Buddhism as we explore the bright colors of Shachung monastery.
Tsongkhapa, meaning: "the man from Tsongkha" or "the Man from Onion Valley" (1357-1419) studied at Shachung Monastery from ages 4 to 17 and was an influential Tibetan Buddhist monk, philosopher and tantric yogi, whose activities led to the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. He is also known by his ordained name Losang Drakpa or simply as "Je Rinpoche". He is also known by Chinese as Zongkapa Lobsang Zhaba or just Zōngkàbā (宗喀巴).
Tsongkhapa was born in Amdo, the son of a Tibetan Longben Tribal leader who also once served as an official of the Yuan Dynasty. It is said that Tsongkhapa's father was probably a Mongolian because he was the head of a Tibetan tribe during the Yuan Dynasty (Mongol Empire). It is possible that a Tibetan philosopher was born from the family of a Mongolian leader. As a monk, Tsongkhapa studied under numerous teachers of the various Tibetan Buddhist traditions which flourished in central Tibet, including Sakya, Jonang, Kagyu and Kadam. Tsongkapa went on to reform these philosophies founding the current ruling sect of Buddhism across the plateau .

The inscriptions I'm guessing is Tibetan? It's a wonderful and peaceful place as usual. Only thing that scares me are those building built until the edge of the cliff. I don't think I could sleep if I were to live in some place similar to that. What kind of food do they eat? I'm guessing vegetarian only? Amazing landscape though.

The inscriptions are Tibetan, Dave. And, yeah, those buildings are placed in some precipitous areas. Not sure how they hold them up against constant pressure of erosion. Some monks are vegetarian and some eat a lot of yak meat because there are not too many other protein sources growing at high altitude :)
