There’s some important philosophy in this video that I’ve always tried to live by. There’s this idea of a “first kind of cool” and a “second kind of cool” which I gleaned from another youtuber many years ago. First kind of cool - the thing needs to be useful, practical, and well-built Second kind of cool - the thing needs to make you feel a certain way when you use it. Maybe you feel proud, maybe the thing has its own inherent sexiness or manliness or something about it that just makes you feel good. Oftentimes this means you like to hold it, touch it, feel it, and that puts a smile on our face. These tampers seem like they were designed with both kinds of cool in mind. They don’t have any extra tools or moving parts they don’t need (just the tamper on one end, and the ash remover on the other end), this is part of the minimalist mindset. On the other hand, they’re dripping with “second kind of cool”- they are substantial feeling- More than other tampers on the market, and when you use it, you are proud to use it because you made it and that makes you feel a certain way, which is good for the heart and soul, and even good for mental health. That’s what makes these handmade all-wood tampers so good, I think.

Wow, this video was a long time ago but perhaps you are still seeing the comments regularly. I love everything about this. The little shed is a perfect spot for solitude and thinking and smoking a pipe and making those beautiful tampers. And those tampers, they are really exquisite. I already had this thought of making tampers, it’s the easiest piper’s accessory to craft. I must say, Mark, you do it so very well. I love the style of these tempers you’ve made. It’s a great inspiration and I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of copycats out there. Perhaps, I will see you again.

I just got 10 various wood pen blanks to try making tampers for fun. I’ve got some briar and morta too but figured I’d start with some basic stuff like walnut and olive first. Morta is smart because any morta tamper will match a Morta pipe for the most part since its black and grains are so similar across the board.

Mark, I've been a pipe smoker for a very short time. I very much appreciate your videos. I've learned a lot from you. In the past, I had some very nice pieces of Mesquite and Ironwood from Arizona. I think that they would make very nice tampers. If I ever find more of this wood during my hiking in the desert, I'll try making my own. I do like your design. Thank you for the inspiration. For me....A "functional" hand made item is always something nice. Time, effort, work went into making the item and that gives me a feeling of good home roots to think and ponder over. A hand item such as your tamper is even better, because I can fidget with it in my hands and feel the work a man has done. A great video...especially in today's society where everything is mass produced.

Hello Mark! Thx a million for taking the time to make that video... To take the time and explain the different type of woods, the results and everything... I actually had my jaw wide open seeing all those beautiful woods, the grain, the color and especially the result of your handywork!! I understand completely what you mean when you mentioned that woodworking is relaxing. I am not a very manual person... I can manage to make some stuff, but I really need to concentrate on what I am doing, and the fact that I only concentrate on one thing, I find it to be relaxing (instead of having to think about several things at the same time like I do at work, in nursing). In a near future, I would like to increase the size of my shack so that I can have a little place of my own, to smoke my pipe and do some woodworking). Well... again thx a lot for that awesome video, very informative and interesting! Also, thx for your friendship!! Take care and Be well my friend!

Hi Mark: I was watching your tamper-making video again here tonight. I want to try and make some tampers myself. I borrowed a Dremel tool from my son. What size are the blanks that you bought? Are they 2cm X 2cm. (3/4 inch X 3/4 inch) , or larger? Thanks. Hope all is well. Ed
@bremenpipesmoker65718 жыл бұрын
+GrandpaCavendish Hello Ed, my friend! My standard size is 15cm in length and 1,5x1,5....but I order the woods in different sizes and cut the blanks myself with a jigsaw...and thats often the difficult part...at least, when you use woods with a higher hardness than 3.2 Janka hardness. You should take a look at the wood database (www.wood-database.com/) before you get started, because there can be serious health issues...even from wood, where you never expected any harm... So...have fun, Ed! And take care!!! Mark

+artsandclouds Thanks for that - and for watching! ...unfortunately my "normal" job keeps me just too occupied to have a "real production"... I always have one or two at Ronny`s store...but as said...I normally don`t sell them... Take care - and be well!

Great video. I do have a question that maybe has already been asked. Have you thought about making a video of how you make a tamper? I would not know where to start but I plan to give it a try.
