Great video! I am about to make some hanging window shades with a roll of the same type of fabric, and I wasn't sure how well it would fold flat for hems. And I've only had a sewing machine for 3 days, so I'm truly new at this. The pressing tool is a great idea. Thanks Lou!

Thanks this is just what I was looking for. Good idea with the reinforcing strip I'll be sure to use it. The flattener thing reminded be of a whale bone folder used in book making. Also I really enjoyed Dingo, thx for messing the mic up😂

Today I was thinking as to how to strengthen the delicate edges of the shade net to fix the grommets. Now that after seeing your video, the tape, generally used for chairs, was used as lining on the edges to fix the grommets. Thanks for proving me a solution.

What kind of thread, what kind of needle, and how many stitches per inch?

Gosh, that was a long time ago. The thread was nylon, and TPI was like 1/4" maybe..

Thank you Deinna for sharing this. What type of thread did you use? Also did it need a bigger needle for fatter thread?
@LouAdzima
@LouAdzima 4 жыл бұрын
Commercial grade nylon thread that is not that much thicker. The needle is also a little larger. Sorry, we don't have the numbers on these things.

Thanks for the video. Can you please kindly comment on the sewing machine? Is it one of the industrial ones? Thank you

Yes it is with a walking foot. Look at Sailrite for commercial machines

@@LouAdzima Thank you :) I am actually torn between a Sailrite vs. Janome HD. Beyond this one-time sewing the backyard garden shade cloth (and its subsequent maintenance / replacement), I'd probably will only be using it for hemming pants only. Their price point differences is quite a bit. It's a tough decision as I am using this shade for my lawn only (not even for myself...). Thanks again
@LouAdzima
@LouAdzima Жыл бұрын
@@leunglg Wow! That's a big price difference, as many times as I have been in Joann's I never looked at their machines. Our machine was a standard motor which we replaced. if you are going to do the netting the walking foot machine is essential. When you fold over any material. Have you looked t any repair stores for used equipment?
@leunglg
@leunglg Жыл бұрын
@@LouAdzima Yea the price point is quite different. Sailrite also recently changed their pricing and how they sell the machines with add-on so it throws all the pricing comparison I did last year out of the window... We are living in small suburb so not much choices of used machines (not a bargain). I recently stumbled across several stores = but their business models are focusing on embroidery and not as much as sail or basic sewing.

Sandy, these were triangle shapes from Costco that we had to resize to fit next to the house.

@LouAdzima

It's pretty light fabric, non industrial machine should work, as long it's not folded too many times.

It's a ConSew commercial machine. We changed the motor to a digital control so it will run very slow. With a walking foot it's a dream. Good luck with your search.

@@LouAdzima I don't see a walking foot on this machine???? and A tutorial isn't much use unless you know what materials you are using IMO.

@@orgasmictomato Yes it is a walking foot machine. The type used in auto upholstery shops. The fabric is premade shade triangles that we purchased at Costco and had to shorten to fit.

@@LouAdzima But you don't say what thread you are using for outside work for best stability and what size needle is in the machine etc. this is the info that was being researched, I have just purchased a singer heavy duty machine to make a few shade sails and truck covers etc. and I make them from scratch, not purchase and alter as that is not cost effective at all in Australia. I can save 80% of the cost of a new sail or cover by making my own. Thanks I have since found detail that bonded polyester #69 is the thread to use and with a size 110/18 needles, but not from your video...... and yes with a walking foot (attachment).🤞🙂
