Normally a fascia board alone is not strong enough to support a shade sail. This attachment at the fascia board goes through the fascia using a rafter bracket that ties in to the rafter. The corner of a house is one of the strongest places to use for a shade sail attachment as there are several 2x4s to attach to. Both of these brackets are designed to be used with normal construction. With posts you should bury 1/3 of the total length of your post in your footing leaving 2/3 above ground.

The easiest way to calculate this is to add a foot to each corner of your sail. If your sail is a 12 x 12 square then put your attachment points at 14 x 14. An 18 x18 x18 triangle sail fits attachment points set at 20 x 20 x 20. It is not enough to extend the turnbuckles all the way, you need a little bit more distance between the sail and the attachment point. I hope this helps. Thanks.

The triangle sail does have a cable. Shade sails need perimeter tensioning from a cable or webbing. I recommend cable sails for your first sail project as they are more flexible than a webbing sail. You can adjust the cable independently from the sail which can help remove wrinkles and get the sail to fit better. The webbing style generally looks better on small sails because it doesn't have corner reinforcements which can look bulky. Webbing sails are less forgiving of measurement errors.

Short answer yes. The weakest link is always the footing. Never skimp on the footing. The post is the next weakest link. You can sometimes use a smaller post and although it may not break, it may bend causing the project to look bad. You can lean your posts out away from the sail to compensate for some bending but you are better off using a bigger post.

I notice that you are installing to fascia boards and the corners of the house. Is there anything special about either location to strengthen the fascia / corners or is normal construction sufficient to support the stress? How are the poles seated also? Is there a rule of thumb for footers for the poles?

Can a 3inch galvinized pipe be used?

How do you calculate how wide apart to set the anchoring points so that you end up with that much tension? I would have thought to just set them as far apart as to accommodate the sail with the turnbuckles fully extended. And afterward tensioning the turnbuckles only without any tensioning device. What am I missing?

For the triangle shade sail you didn't run a cable correct? I have done some up to 24' x 30' with 5 connection points with no cable system. Do you tend to always go with a cable? Or is it situational?
