We stayed at the Shades of Green Military Resort at Walt Disney World! Join us as we give you a room tour, try most of the food locations and explore the grounds where we see tons of wildlife! My husband is retired military. I love this place! The price point for the size of room compared to the other Disney resorts can’t be beat! You can spend that extra money in the parks etc.

It’s funny hearing Jen talk about the bath products. Just for reference the highest rate at Shades right now is $209 I think. It might have gone up since July when it was last there. That’s a year round price not seasonal, that’s way less than a deluxe resort and you do get extra magic hours so to me I’ll be fine with my own bath products.

I’m not active or retired military, but wow is this hotel my vibe! I prefer staying off property most times because I like the relaxed atmosphere of a rental house. If I could stay here, I absolutely would! It seems so peaceful and calm!

My Grandparents took me there back in the 70s when it was a Disney Golf Resort, hasn't changed that much since the 70s. I believe the government bought the resort in the late 80s, but before that it was a normal high-level Disney Resort.

Correct, AFRC bought it and added it to the list of Properties in the mid 1980s or 1990s. AFRC properties are not quite as nice as staying commercially, but when you are on a tight budget in between assignments, it is nice to have a place to go and completely relax. Shout out to the late great Hotel General Walker and her staff.

Back in 1990 that resort was called "The Disney Inn" we stayed there for our honeymoon. Its a beautiful property . Its so wonderful that disney is providing this for our military and first responders!

It originally opened as The Golf Resort, later becoming The Disney Inn. It was later sold/given to the US Military as a goodwill gesture.

The Disney ears are real Disney ears. They are just not the high Disney prices since it is not a Disney owned resort. My fiancé is an army veteran who has stayed there. We are both locals. Thank you for the great video! 😊

As an Aussie army brat, I have to say that that Shades of Green reminded much of the army base at Puckapunyal in Victoria. Animals everywhere, especially kangaroos and so green.

My family and I stayed there back in September. Awesome place! I think it spoiled us since we usually stay at the value resorts. I think it was about the same price for us, or maybe a little more than staying at a value resort. Was so much quieter and barely any waits for bus transportation! Was also great having the PX/Shoppette right down the hall from our room! Hope to stay there again someday!

I stayed here back in 1974 when it was Walt Disney Golf Resort. My first trip to WDW. I remember they would put small rolls of peppermint lifesavers on the pillow and prop my raggedy Ann doll next to a towel they folded into fun shapes. When we would walk past the housekeeping cart my mom would help herself to extra lifesavers. Lol.

I will tell them to Pull up your Vlog on KZfaq, at "shades of Green" and get a real tour!!! It is really nice!! the Pools, Playground, 🦌Love the Deer, and Turkeys; and the Restaurant "Manginos" has good Prices, the breakfast buffet!! Big selection!!! Enjoy! Loved it!! I’m glad you were able to stay at SOG. We stayed there for our first 2 trips to WDW in 2010 and 2013. We loved it. Their food game has really stepped up based upon your vlog. It wasn’t hitting on much back when we were there. The rooms were said to be the largest standard resort rooms on Disney property. One of the reasons people enjoyed staying there was the walk across the street to get to the poly for the monorail, but that’s no longer allowed due to the road widening project out front. According to SOG, that option won’t be returning after the construction is over either. Thank you again for the great vlog!

I have stayed at Shades so many times right up until my Grandpa passed. Miss that guy, but I have so many fantastic memories of it! My favorite memory was when we had a room overlooking the driving range and a guy got chased by a turkey

We've stayed there at least 10 times since 1998 and will be back in Nov 2024. My husband is a retired O-6. We've sponsored friends and family a couple of times. I love the feel of the resort. It's pretty quiet and very tropical.

Disney did originally own & operate it until: “The resort was so successful and popular that MWR decided to purchase the resort in 1996. The resort was purchased outright from Disney. However, Disney still owns the more than 30 acres of underlying property on which the resort sits. Shades of Green is a self-sustaining resort, no outside/taxpayer funds are used in its operation or upkeep.”

My first time at Disney my family and I stayed there! All I remember was a magical time and just so much fun! I had a great time and my family was able to go to Disney and stay with my dad when we may not have been able to go to Disney! I highly reccomend! I also had a cast member grant a special wish for my family that trip that got us to the front of the line and a special tour! Disney does truly take care of service members in terms of the shades of green people!

Brought back memories. I stayed there once years ago as a child when it was the golf resort. My only strong memory were the ANTS! All over the room.(by the way looked very similar to the room now) looks like they fixed the ant problem. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

We are a military family and I remember one time we stayed at a different resort, but ended up taking a bus (I do remember walking there though.....) and we bought our actual park tickets there. Now we buy them on post here back home before heading to Disney, but I do remember going to Shades of Green once.

We used to buy tickets at Shades when I was a Kid. We bought tickets to Universal, Sea world and Busch Gardens. Mainly cause my parents BASE didn't have a Travel office

👍 interesting to see a tour. We have stayed here often. I like that we can just walk to Polynesian. Being active now retired military there are resorts in great areas we can visit like Germany & Hawaii. Thought everyone had to have a military ID to shop in Exchange… you are correct on everyone staying at SOG feels like family. Some of the kids have lived in military housing all over the world.

We love SOG!!!!! We stayed at SOG during Hurricane Ian last year. They were fabulous! Second stay next month and I can't wait! They are over-the-top amazing! The splash pad is my grandkid's favorite! AF mom here!

This is our resort. We always stay on the palm side. The rooms must be set up differently because the rooms I've been in have been a bit bigger. Glad you got to see it. And on the breakfast buffet they make mickey shaped pancakes... they are yummy

I think they were actually in the Magnolia wing. The video of them walking to and from their room, as well as the view, suggest this. I've always stayed in the Palm wing and agree it's a bit different.

I think that my sister and I stayed at Shades of Green soon after it was transferred over to the military in the mid 90’s. She was stationed at the a Pentagon and was able to reserve a week’s stay for us. It was the one and only time I have been to WDW.

It’s lovely that the military in the USA have this facility! In the uk ,when I was in the military we had the Union Jack club in London which was very cheap , I stayed there a few times ! I’m not aware of anywhere else! The shades of green looks really good 👍

I've been researching Shades of Green recently for a future trip so thanks for this timely vlog. One thing I was suprised to find out is that Veterans who qualify for Disney Armed Forces Salute discounts can probably stay cheaper at a Disney hotel like Port Orleans due to the 30-40% discount with the Disney Armed Forces Salute program.

@jimsinkorea, indeed and absolutely! 🥳🎉 You may be better off staying at a WDW resort hotel with the military discount. My go to is Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge (Deluxe Hotels) with our Salute to the Armed Forces discounted hotel pricing. I also purchase the 5-day Park hopper ticket from either Shades of Green or at my MWR on Post/Installation at a great price. 😉 Thank you for your service Jim!🫡

The discounts at the Disney hotels are on a limited basis and the discounts decreases when demand increases. It used to be a set amount, but changed a few years ago. Also, the rooms at SOG are much larger than a Disney room, of comparable cost.

Also take into account taxes and resort fees. We stayed at POR when we flew in a day early to avoid a storm. Two very different vibes. With the size of our family the extra space made a difference for us.

I think the location, room size for the price beats that. I walked to Disney from SOG. I also took the monorail on my last trip. I know that’s more difficult now. I paid 1/3 price compared to a deluxe and I was next to Grand Floridan and Polynesian. You can’t beat the prices in the shoppette. I think I paid $1.50 for ice cream. Love Shades!!

Here are a lot of differences between Shades and cheaper Disney rooms. Shades rooms are larger and are on par with deluxe Disney resorts. SOG has room service and interior hallways. It was originally the Disney Inn.

My daughter is active duty AF and we stayed at SOG last summer! It is beautiful! We had the best time there and saved quite a bit of money. And the transportation to/from SOG was amazing!! No waiting at all!

This is really good information, and to see. We are military, and I had heard of this place. Heard "meh" about it, but let's be honest, we'd really just need a decent place to sleep. Prices looked good, and they are an authorized seller for the military passes. Glad you guys got to do a video on this one. Good to know!! When my family and I finally get to go down there, I think we know where to go!

Shades of Green was originally the Disney Golf Resort and opened in 1973. It became the Disney Inn in 1986. It usually wasn’t at capacity and was first rented out to the Dept of Defense in 1994 and sold to them in 1996, though Disney owns the land it’s on.

Shades of Green was a way our family was able to go to DisneyWorld on a civil servant’s budget. My family considers it our “home”. My kids grew up getting photos with the Mickey on the lobby and this year we took our 3 year old granddaughter and she got her photo with a Mickey. They also have great wedding packages. Our daughter had her wedding there and we were able to have a block of rooms for about 55 guests who came to the wedding. Shades is not provided by Disney nor funded by taxpayers $$. It’s is a DoD owned hotel. It DOES qualify for extra magic hours which we love.

my bestie's hubby is in the navy and her dad was in the army so every time we went to Disney together we stayed at Shades! With the Ac in the room- its motion activated. We had issues when we stayed and the maintenance guy showed us how to override that and it helped us so much! such a great resort!

i will point out that the liquor and beer section in the exchange is identical to a traditional Class Six section (the alcohol) shop at most military bases, i grew up a military brat and later was military myself and it took me a while to realize that wasn’t normal at non-military stores in many states 😂

I'm glad you were able to finally stay at SoG. You do a far better job describing everything that you cover than I do. My wife and I are both retired Army and the DoG has been our "WDW home" for years (I have now moved to Windermere, and am in hopes of working for the Mouse for my fun money. Hope to finally meet you both at the parks someday. BTW, SoG has the best breakfast on Disney property. I'm also glad that you noticed the "family feel", we are one big dysfunctional family.

My favorite place!!! We love the rice bowls too! We rush back to make dinner before they close. It feels very safe also. Very family oriented. Also I think you stayed on the magnolia side? The ceilings seem lower. Rooms do vary as they update. Upper rooms do have balconies. Guests do have the option of choosing ADA rooms if needed. Hope you had some ice cream before leaving! It’s so good!

Thank you for the tour! Been on active duty for a decade now and have never stayed at Shades of Green (despite our many WDW trips). What is your opinion of the amenities for this resort versus the Bonnett Creek area? We typically stay at either the Hilton or the Waldorf. I think since we are always using points to stay on the Hilton properties it will never make sense from a price point of view to stay there, but I do want to plan one trip at a Magic Kingdom resort area hotel and Shades of Green is technically that. Second question, would you stay here over any of the Disney MK resorts? Yes, I recognize the price difference, but it would be for a bucket list type stay.

I would stay at Shades of Green versus any of the value or moderate Disney resorts. With Shades of Green, you get the extra park hours at night that are usually only offered to guests that stay at the deluxe resorts. This makes it worth it to our family to stay here. One of the downsides to SOG is that you don’t have late-night food options and you have to ride the bus from SOG to the TTC and then take the ferry or Monorail to the Magic Kingdom. For us, the extra park hours and access to the Exchange are reasons to choose this over other resorts.

There are other armed forces recreation centers around the world as well. There is one in Hawaii, Germany, and South Korea.

Honorably Discharged military can stay in Sept. and Jan. We go every year in Jan and sometimes in Sept. too. I have to say we always see deer on the golf course but have never seen them around the resort.

Local central Florida playground company I can recommend is Playlofts out of brevard. Ours in our backyard is 9 years old and solid as heck! Very affordable too!

We stayed there back in the early 80s before it was military. We enjoyed it and even back then it was less than Poly or the CR.

I’ve stayed there four times, and have five days booked for mid Dec. Looking forward to it. Way cheaper than the deluxe I’ve stayed at.

I stayed at Shades of Green multiple times as a kid. Guess that is Advantage of being kid of 2 Army VETS. When i was a kid, there wasn't a Garage. I haven't stayed there since The REMODEL. This resort would b Perfect for a Cousins trip. Since my Cousin is RETIRED NAVY

We have been there at least 10 times. We normally stay there when we go. We will be there the 2nd week of January 2024. This cost $200 a day where across the street at the Poly this room is $800+. You also do not have to pay taxes on this room. This allows us to splurge on food at EPCOT. I served 27 years, from 1971-1998,

I stayed there curtesy of a cousin way back in 95 & 97. There was only 1 building, the original Disney Inn. Rooms were huge! The only restaurant was all buffet and was only around $9 a person. Also, not sure if it has changed but only service members could buy alcohol & cigarettes in the PX. Guests could buy anything else but had to prove they were staying on property.

I loved Shades of Green when we stayed. It might be older but it’s clean and well kept. Tip: Their spa had much cheaper than Disney princess makeovers for little girls!
