Learn to shade a comic in Krita the way I shaded Episode 34 of my webcomic Pepper&Carrot ( www.peppercarrot.com/en/artic... ). The video is detailed and goes step-by-step to explain in details what I'm selecting; and more importantly maybe, why. It might sounds like this setup is long to do, but if I'm not explaining it; adding the hardlight, the mid-grey and the selection by color label can be done within a minute. It then allows to shade quickly the panels. This video follows a series of two videos: a timelapse about inking a page of this episode, and a detailed video about the flatting of the page with the colorize-mask feature of Krita.

Thanks. What I didn't understand is why you used the 50 % grey when you actually shade the character with color? What is the advantage of using a grey?
@jeckos150
@jeckos150 3 жыл бұрын
David will probably answer but I can already tell you what he explained on a previous video : the mid-gray used with hard light blending mode allows to color pick a shading in respect of the opacity, whereas if you color pick the same shading without the mid-gray, you will obtain a 100% opacity color even though it was not applied at full opacity. Sorry if this explanation is not clear... :-)

@@catchyou29 Sorry if I wasn't clear about it; Yes, it is related to solve opacity issues and color-picking (and also later using filter; like Color balance). A black brush stroke at 25% opacity on hard light will render the same than a solid 100% opacity 25% gray. But one will be picked all the time as black color; other one will be all the time at 25% gray color. When I started to experiment with Hard-Light; I quickly saw it was a pain to get transparency on it for shading. So, I build the habit to start it with a Mid-Gray to solve this issues.

Thanks! Yes, this technic (as many on my channel) are homemade research and dev. Good luck trying it; it might be unconfortable at first; but it offers a real economy of 'layer switching' and items on layer stack to manage shading+light+ambiant+effects in a single pass.

What happens when erasing? Does it erase the grey too? So do I have to fill it again with grey?
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, so when Erasing, it will just erase and the area go back to transparent at this place. If you don't plan to color-pick this area later; it should be fine. But if you paint on it with black color and a brush managing opacity (eg, a 20% opacity stroke of black); if you pick color at this area, it will pick 100% black. That's not a big risk :)

I simply use Krita for my work since 10 years now (almost daily) and I was the first professional user to switch to it fulltime back in the day when it was still available on Linux only and part of an office suit: Calligra. I followed Krita development since this time and gave a lot of feedback and bug reports, I went at Krita sprint(IRL events). I made many workshops. I participated to paper (the origin of Colorize mask, a couple of Gmic filters)... I feel now a big part of this software was adapted/customised for my specific need between 2012 to 2014 when there wasn't a lot of user around; a bit like a second skin. I keep following development daily (on IRC channels; I read some of the code commit description too). That's how I keep knowing what is happening in Krita. But since Krita 4; many things are evolving quickly; and I'm no longer a 'now-it-all' of Krita; areas like Animation and specific brush settings are new lands to discover for me.

I've learned that the best way to learn Krita, all the weirdest tools and shortcuts, is to help other users. If someone has a question about a tool, you usually need to check the tool yourself and explore to see if what they are asking about is possible or not, or for example when you remember it is possible, then to tell them exactly how to do it. That way you learn quite fast. At least I learned a lot.

@@DavidRevoy When I joined Krita team, I was able to be engaged in everything, test stuff that was interesting to me, help others and keep an eye on everything. Now, only two years later, it's just too much ;) I'm learning to let go of even things I am interested in but they can be handled by other people, like the Height mode for textures... And just keep track of those that need me most (or those I like most... :P ). // tiar

QUESTION: how do you force your cat to always sleep at the same spot right at a time when you shooting your videos? Is there a secret technique for this?
@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 3 жыл бұрын
It's really easy: I have three cat and a little house (my workstation is a corner of the living room) ; and this spot is one of their favorite place to watch everything in the room, so there is competition for it (but the red tabby often win it). If you look to previous video; my other one younger brown tabby appears also. The third one female likes this spot only by night when the two other are hunting outside. They usually like to be around, and they sleep a lot of hours during day. So, it would be harder for me to shoot when they are not around (I usually record that on wednesday afternoon). My light setting for shooting the video is very intense (to get web camera to catch many frame per second without noise) and they probably also very like it. I hope it will stay this way, but if one day I record a video and there is no cat; it will be ok too :-3

All in all, it's a bug; please report to the developpers with references of your device and system.

@DavidRevoy
@DavidRevoy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, to erase the shadows on this type of special layer: you have three options in Krita: 1. the E key to erase , 2. A selection then the 'Del' (delete) key, 3. paint with Mid-Gray color because of the blending mode on the layer. If you check this three methods, and none of them works, try to isolate your layer and see what's going on. (eg. Move it on the top of your layer stack ) . A rare case might exist where the Layer Group has trouble to refresh. But it's rare and I saw that only on very unstable Krita development version. But if it happens on your computer, please report! Thanks and good luck.
