It's entirely possible some Japanese Smith or merchant brought a longsword with him from travels from afar, and then tried to incorporate aspects of it into a katana, but it just never caught on with the highly traditional samurai.Samurai. What would be more likely is if a Chinese merchant or Smith tried to modify a Katana and it just never went anywhere.

When I originally watched the build video it made me imagine a scenario in which a Japanese sword smith got his hands on say, a European or middle eastern sword and thought, 「まあ、これオモロいやつやなぁ。なんとか作ってみようかなぁ。」 It’s hardly unprecedented. I recently learned of Ming dynasty Chinese sailors witnessing the combat effectiveness of ootou and uchigatana in the hands of Japanese pirates and basically imitated the design. There were notable design differences, but they remained popular in China well into the early 20th century, so pretty good weapons.
@Scuzzlebutt142

@@stgibbs86 So what? This thing they created has a standard cross guard and pommel, just like the construction of a Swiss Saber. And using an imported blade is a very european thing, as they imported blades from all over and put them in their own furniture, didn't make them not an example of the sword just cause the blade was imported. If I came across this thing in the wild, and didn't have the backstory, I would classify it as a Swiss saber by its form. What components you used to form it really don't matter. The same way if you fit a Messer blade onto a haft, my first thought would be Naginata, not trying to make up a term for it.

I wish we could work with you guys on these! Would be a lot of fun and Chris has actually done this exercise before. Just to add, heavier overall swords do not necessarily hit harder, it really does depend on distribution of that mass and how it's used (ie balance point, and how it's swung). An easy way to see this is a variety of feders and sparring swords. If the POB is pulled way back to the guard compared to farther out POBs, they tend to hit a lot lighter, no matter the overall weight. OH! and if you want to do a larger O katana with a euro grip, I think a 1060 blade would be much better than a 1040 blade. Only because those makers tend to really nail the heat treat with 1060 more consistently.

as a physics student, E=.5mv^2. You have slightly more mass in motion, and the mass that's there is moving faster, therefore you will apply more energy in the strike, increasing the force applied and the cutting capacity. The weight distribution thing works because, by putting the mass further from the point of rotation, you increase the moment arm and the speed of that mass, allowing it to store more energy in it's motion, but adding the counterbalance doesn't decrease the moment arm of the existing mass, it only adds more mass.

I may be completely wrong but here is my take: When you cut something it means you have surpassed its maximum strain resistance. Strain, like pressure, is the force-to-area ratio and force is mass multiplied with acceleration. In order to increase the acceleration you would need a bigger lever. Now in a two-handed sword the lever has more to do with your two hands and less to do with the center of mass. As a result the change of center of mass is way less impactful than the change in mass.

Regarding the balance and how it affects cutting force I agree with Shad. What comes to my mind is horsepower. HP is calculated with both torque and speed. You can increase an engines HP by increasing the size of the pistons, and therefore increasing their torque. Or you can move them faster. Both will increase the overall HP of the engine, the difference is how you transfer that energy to the wheels, and the same is true here. Yes, you can use conservation of force to keep that mass moving, but a more balanced sword will be easier to accelerate which will make it more responsive and maneuverable. There’s a reason the Formula 1 cars have smaller pistons and shorter stroke which allows them to run at a higher RPM. That allows the engines to rev up and down quicker which makes them more responsive to the constantly changing RPM they need for maneuvering through corners and then accelerating. Vs NASCAR, where more time is spent in straightaways, and even corners are usually not as tight, so larger bore pistons can be used since there isn’t as much accelerating and decelerating.

Repeat this process with a nōdachi and see if Tyranth doesn't change his mind. Because the tip heavy balance is practically doubled on the nōdachi and giving it the balance of a longsword with the reach of a greatsword might make it completely broken. The Tyranthian Scimtana needs a longer blade, a slightly longer grip, and a fishtail pommel. The Katana's weakness is always reach, and since you are adding weight in pommel you can balance that against length, and the fishtail gives you the most capacity to choke down the grip to stretch out the reach further. You would be getting the benefits of a Miao Dao without having the overlong grip due to the pommel weight - getting it more into the longsword family. There is a reason why short swords are so often stabbers - because stabbing loses no energy with shorter length (just reach). Slashing does lose energy the shorter the blade.

I'm three months late on this, but on the cutting force thing: I think we need to look at two cases: Strikes from the wrist and strikes from the shoulder. (or however it works in detail, I'm an engineer not a sports trainer) If you strike from the shoulder, you strike with the whole blade, and the improved balance will not help much. In a downwards strike the blade will be heavier, which means it will be more gravity assisted, which will improve it's force. In an upwards strike this effect reverses itself and you will lose force. In short, if you overswing, a heavier hilt will make the entire thing heavier. Shock horror. If you strike from the wrist, on the other hand, then the added balance comes into play. Bringing the center of gravity closer to the lever point (your forehand) will decrease the moment of inertia, allowing for swifter strikes. Since you are not striking with the hilt, it does not come into play, so the added weight will have a negligible impact but you will be able to deliver strikes at higher speed. A more balanced blade will be more manueverable and in those manuevers will be more force. This is true in upwards as well as downwards context.

The longer distance from the tip to the center of mass means that it will be slightly faster on impact. combine that with the additional weight and it means that it should have more angular momentum. It should also give you more point control. It becomes more of a slashing weapon than a chopping blde, though, because the extra mass is now in the handle. On another side note, by adding that heavy pommel, you add in the possibility of a pommel strike to a weapon that never really had one before. Options are good.

Folks be complaining about lowering the center of rotation. When it actually means there is more blade above that point actively helping you cut. And the shorter lever arm makes it easier to move. The only weakness is a lowered resistance to binding blades applying more force back to the user, which we helped fix with a competent cross guard. The argument is like saying a longsword is worse than a broadsword because the blade is longer!

If you lower the point of balance toward the hilt then you are adding mass to the working side of the lever and mass x speed = force. So it should have more force with the new hilt assuming that speed is constant.

If weight is an issue with the current sword but balance is fine (this would also work to shift balance as well), then grinding in a fuller and changing out/modifying the pommel and maybe reshaping and/or thinning the crossguard will all reduce weight. I don't know if it will be by enough to properly offset the added weight to get back the starting weight but it would help. Sounds like a pain though, also might need to either re-temper the blade if the grind/cut is to aggressive. Might be best to cool the blade while working in the fuller to avoid that. This would save money but really finding a lighter blade would probably be better.

Swords are useful and fun. Though I personally prefer Clubs, Maces, and Warhammers. However, for a Sword I'd prefer a Scimatana over a regular Katana. But my absolute favorite Sword would be a slightly longer Double-Edged Sword with a Gladius type shape. The best middle-ground weapon is an Axe though.

@G2Bryce
@G2Bryce Жыл бұрын
10:21 Technically Shad is correct. By adding mass to the handle, you are increasing the moment the handle is making. The handle and the blade are fixed together and both of their moments are adding together. Meaning, by increasing the moment (Fxr) of the handle, you are increasing the total moment able the axis of rotation. This only works if the axis of rotations is NOT your wrist, but if you allow the blade to rotate in your grip. If the rotation is in the wrist, which is standard, then increasing the mass increases the Force of the total moment arm, in this case ranging the entire length of the sword, both needed to swing the blade as well as how much the blade is impacting with.

It's true that "katana" just literally means "sword" but even in Japanese lexicon it's become fairly common to refer to the same style of sword as what the West calls a "katana." The Japanese have tended to adopt "剣" (tsurugi/ken) as the general word for "sword" and "刀" (katana) more often for Japanese-style swords and are more than willing to let it just be shorthand for "uchigatana" (the standard two-hander).

Untrue. the word used to mean 'sword' in general is 剣, SPECIFICALLY when it's read as 'ken'. when read as 'tsurugi', it refers specifically to double-edged, straight swords. 'katana' on the other hand, refers to single-edged, most probably curved swords. the origin & the process are mostly irrelevant when it comes to defining what's a katana in the broadest sense of the term.

To fix the problem of the single edge, what about adding a false edge for back hand cutting techniques like you have on a Bowie? That way it's still a single edge, you don't loose that much weight, and you can still do 90% of the back cuts. It would probably work better with a shorter fuller, like on the two-handed falchion, but I haven't looked close enough at the blades to see if it's doable. Plus once you start grinding you'll probably have to re-harden/temper the blade too...
