Halfway through the video I realized just HOW MANY characters are recruitable in this game. I hope we get some interesting units later that really shine in interesting ways.

As a big fan of the "Is Lyn good in different game?" series, I am extremely excited for this, it really gives off the same vibes. Also hoping Mekkah gives Forde a second (and third, and fourth...) chance, surely he can't be bad and one short forever, and even if he is I trust the Patrons to have added an unit worse than him. 48:00 It is Gaiden Alm, because interestingly Alm is one of only 3 or 4 characters that got their bases changed from Gaiden to Echoes (of course, everyone had their growths changed). The only change there is that in Echoes he has 1 less defense, so the extra point of defense is definitely welcome. Alm probably won't do that well, but it will be interesting to see how he performs without his broken Gaiden/Echoes promotion and with this growths that were pretty average for Gaiden but awful for pretty much every other game. This is gonna be quite the playthrough to watch, with this being in the top 3 of my favorite entries, and as such I plan to go through on this journey as well on H5. While I may not be the most accurate entirely, I will give my thoughts on each of the given units, and rate them on a scale of 1-10 in order of recruitment, based on my own personal knowledge of Shadow Dragon as a whole Marth: Marth combat wise may not be a good unit, but his utility is borderline unparalleled, since villages can only be visited by him, this means he's the only one capable of recruiting units in later chapters, and that alone is an important feat that sets him apart from the cast, not to mention the pace of the game is very much set at his 7 movement, since Marth has to seize in all but one chapter, which while not a point for him, it's still something valid for the lord. Next up is his thief utility as of chapter 6 onward, making him situationally useful, as without prior knowledge on if thieves will be available before then, Marth could be the only unit able to claim those rewards. Now in all fairness, Marth is roughly about a 4-5/10 unit for everything else, but with him being the main recruitment method, it's only fair to give the starting character the top ranking, even if it's not at all because of his rough bases and sword locked state, though he does get bonus points for being the only current unit able to use effective weaponry in the form of his rapier. In light of all this, I give him a 10/10, a great utility character for the game Oscar: Being a cavalier in a non-reclass permitted run is rather nice, and just like the cavalier he replaced, he's an overall solid unit, and with the prologue to build lance rank closer to ridersbane potential is another quite great step, base speed is also quite nice as in the earliest chapters he won't get doubled, and with a bit of investment, he definitely can be valid for the duration of the run, just keep him away from any effective weapons along the ride. I rate Oscar an 8.5/10, though in my run, he is left to be sacrificed so I could use the other cavalier Forde: Clearly the worst unit. 0/10. Nah, in all seriousness, most of what's applied to Oscar goes here, except Forde has built in Ridersbane potential at base rank thanks to C lances, this makes him by and away the better Cavalier, and coupled with that better 8 base speed, he's got the potential to run the whole game as a long term unit. With all his abilities in mind, he's for sure a 10/10 unit, and even if he gets screwed by levels, he's a valid target for giving stat boosters later in the game minus one for a more fitting unit. While we won't get to see this happen in this playthrough, he's still not the best unit of the cast, at least in my opinion Harr: A way better Jagen than the real deal, and while reclassing means that Archers will always threaten to chunk into his hp, he's still a vital crutch especially for the brutal nature of H5, as such, he's easily a 10/10 unit who can easily pull you into the point in the game where you can let your growth units take the lead, but even then his base weapon ranks makes him usable at any point needed, so don't sleep on the new and improved Jagen Rosado: By Nagi this is the biggest growth unit I've seen thus far, and Rosado doesn't disappoint, except for the lackluster hp, luckily, not only are those growth rates and solid bases really reliable, he's the easiest target for the Seraph Robe of chapter 6, meaning that as long as you provide a reasonable amount of levels, he'll be better than the entire squad without any question. With the added bonus of a huge axe rank boost on promotion, this is the only unit so far who breaks my scales. No question in my mind, Rosado clocks in as an 11/10, even despite the terrifying 10 hp start. Keep the flier alive by all means Alm: This is the last known character of the prologues, and this is truly the most mixed bag one of the crew. Pulling from his Gaiden growths will unfortunately stunt Alm from being a good unit, but there is one good thing if you decide to use the farmboy, in the form of promoting to Hero. Currently, he is the only unit known who can become this class, and Axes means he can do something in the long term, but even then, his stunted speed growth really adds salt to the wound, but eventual promise of having effective weaponry is a small glimmer for him. Sadly, he's definitely the worst unit so far, and I can't put him any higher than at 5/10, if he gets speed blessed, you might be able to use him, but otherwise, you may as well use Marth for swords, and find use for this deployment slot elsewhere, though there is definitely worse you can do, at least compared to the base Shadow Dragon cast. I'm excited to see how the rest of the journey pans out, and here I'll leave a few closing thoughts and any bugs I find. The starting group is without a doubt much stronger than the original cast, and while I'd love to see Alm get some tweaks to be more valid (my personal thoughts is to give him axe rank upon promotion, and maybe buff his growths by no more than 5% to at least make it more feasible that he can turn out good, and make him more of an investment unit so you have to choose between him and Rosado). I have nothing else to add to the units, so let's talk about bugs I caught in my run-through Only one bug to note here, and that is that for Prologue IV, my Emulator got softlocked on the cutscene after sending off the decoy, though it does seem to work out fine when toggling the "use separate thread" video setting for MelonDS, my emulator of choice, it does seem that skipping the mentioned cutscene also bugs, and I'll have to test it more to see if there's anything that consistently causes it Either way, I love the content Mekkah, and OriginalRaisins is a treat of a guest for the show. Hope this content will spark more love for the game, as I feel it's underrated, but I've rambled on long enough, hope you have a great day/night/morning, and can't wait to see how this all progresses

Idea for marth: give him his fire emblem fates growth for the lols

I love this idea so much! It could also pave the way for trying to beat the whole game with all the casts of the series (including remakes) in order of game releases, just to see which cast with which growths and such would be easiest and hardest to do... It doesn't have to be full playthroughs or anything, but more an abridged series like most challengeruns, where you just do post commentary about the ups, downs and assorted highlights of the playthrough.

This is a fun concept. One thing worth pointing out is that the game is balanced around the assumption of units having low magic and low resistance. Now that you're using physical units with more than 2% RES growth you'll have a team that very likely will have a half dozen more bulk vs magic in the late game than normal which will potentially be very relevant.

Holy shit, that Haar is broken. Jeigan is already extremely good for most of the game, even on H5, and his growths are terrible. Those bases and growths on a unit that can fly before you unlock class changing make for an insane unit. Unless there are other, better axe users later, he's going to have more or less exclusive access to hammers and poleaxes to hit for effective damage, and his growths mean he might actually be able to fight without them later on. Not that I'm complaining, obviously. Haar deserves it. I'm just saying, if a unit like this existed in actual Shadow Dragon, he would be an easy top-tier.

SMH, replacing the Peakanea cast with other units and daring to call it better. (Half-joking, but this'll still be interesting. Sincerely hoping someone replaced Navarre with Samto.)

I’ve recently watched the Lyn in binding blade series and quickly became a fan of those types of unit performance in other games. I’m quite excited to watch all of these custom characters perform in Shadow Dragon, but better because we get the complete package of content to play (all gaiden chapters and prologue). So far, Rosado and Haar look very promising. Alm is a bit iffy, but I’m sure he’ll get things done eventually. Forde was just existing.

Wooooo it's Shadow Dragon! Honestly I'm glad it was my first game in the series all those years back, it might not be the best and far from my personal favorite but I'd still rather replay the DS games than any of the post Awakening ones. So, apparently most people don't love neither the animations nor the portraits, and I admit, portraits do look a bit rough, but call me crazy I've always liked the overall aesthetic of the DS remakes, like the actual map graphics and map sprites, the UI, and the animations as well. As for the hack itself, I guess this is the REAL Fire Emblem Engage hehehe. Props to the creator.

I don't know if something like this is possible since I'm not familiar with fe hacking, but this would be great for some kind of randomizer. Programming in a bunch of characters from across the series with their classes and growths and letting you get a different team for every playthrough

I think you can make alm more enticing to train up if you gave him the promo gains from fighter to hero class. His gains on promotion would be +12 hp, +6 str, +7 skl, +6 spd, +4 def, +3 luk, and +0 res.

It's really all about taste, but I strongly agree that the graphic design of DS Emblem is super overhated. They were unpopular games back in their day, and that probably amplified people's distaste for the style. SD was my first FE, and I really liked the relatively gritty pseudo-3D style it had going on. I also still think the crit animations are super smooth, and the artstyle in the chapter introduction cg:s is rad as hell. The only big misses in-game are Marth's portrait, which is admittedly a bad place to scuff, and the larp-prop ass axe models. Out-of-game too, Masamune Shirow wasn't at his best with the official art, but Daisuke Izuka is still one of the goats of FE art.

The enemies in the first chapter of the prologue are so absurd. Axe Fighters with way lower than usual bases. It's like they sent small children to capture Marth. (Who I suppose is still a child.) I found myself not enjoying the mod that makes prologue accessible on H5 all as much as I thought I would, I'd rather just skip the prologue. It's good to show it off for people who haven't seen though.
