I never really played the game myself, I can see why people would consider it as the greatest game of all times. While I am a fan of games with exploration and combat, Shadow of the Colossus seems to be too complex for my taste. But the funny thing is that after some research, I found out that this game on the PS2 came out a year after the release of another popular PS2 game. And that was the first Monster Hunter game by Capcom. To those who don’t know, Monster Hunter is a game that mostly revolves around hunting monsters. And despite the game being a fantasy, the monsters and world are still grounded to reality. Which means that there is no magic in game. I brought this up because while the game was still in development, the creators of Capcom originally had planned to make Monster Hunter a seamless open world game. But due to technical limitations, the idea was scrapped in the developers created multiple locals with each of them being separated into multiple zones that you can only travel to through loading screens. Shadow of the Colossus on the other hand came out a year later and developers who made the game were able to make it into what no other PS2 game was able to have. And that is a seamless open world game. After learning that information, I’m surprised that Capcom didn’t take any note from Shadow of the Colossus. They originally wanted Monster Hunter to be a seamless open world game but couldn’t due to limitations. Capcom also could’ve asked the developers of Team Ico for the technology they used for Shadow of the Colossus and create the Monster Hunter game they always wanted to create. I would have imagined how the past Monster Hunter games would have been if Capcom done that.
