My dear British friend, I don't think you know how or what you can do with a "Zollstock" other than measure? That you can use this measuring instrument to mark measurements without getting splinters in your fingers when you run your hand along rough edges, because you can even use the "Zollstock" as a stop with a measuring distance. The "Zollstock" - at least some people have one - can indicate angles; there is an angle scale printed between the joints. And as kitchen and BBQ tongs they are unbeatable and you can even use them to remove the crown cap from a bottle of beer (leverage with a longer arm = physics).

I am a 66yr old divorced woman. I probably own a drill, some screwdrivers and a hammer etc but I really don’t know why I can’t stop watching Shadow Foam! It’s like an addiction at this point.

The big stores in Germany are awesome, you can never have too many tools......

Used to live in Germany, the DIY shops always used to amaze me

So at 6:39 in the video you have a large T key in your hand that is made for door locks. When you install a door lock but not have a cylinder in yet or door handle to open it, this tool with the pointy end can open de door, a bit further down you see a notch that work as a cylinder to lock the door. At the top you can use these square bits also for the door handle if the square pin is in place but no handle attached yet.

I work in social housing & change 100’s of toilet seats. I never knew the universal tool existed until watching your latest video! I’ve found a version of them on eBay for £8 . Nice one,thanks !

I really miss the German hardware stores. Screwfix and Tool Station don't have the same possibility to actually browse for interesting items. It's fine if you know exactly what you want, but being able to handle the item and feel the quality, is much more useful IMO.

The silver tool you picked up and said it looks like it could go on a necklace is a lock multi tool, it's used for measuring euro cylinders and for operating multi locks on doors when there's no cylinder in the door and also has keys on the other end for gas and electricity cabinets

From USA, love unusual tools, which is why I watch. When I was young tools in the USA were high quality and inexpensive. There are still quality tools, but most are expensive . As old man I have new category I call "old man tools" . These are tools that make it easier on my limited stamina and declining strength. My 1st tool in this category is my Dewalt battery powered caulk gun. I was finding it difficult to pump out a whole caulk cartridge. The Dewalt makes it possible to apply multiple caulk cartridges without my hand hurting. A side benefit is smother dispensing . Another is my Dewalt pruning shears which I use on my roses and other plants. More recently I got a Dewalt copper pipe cutting attachment for my Dewalt impact driver. I recently used it on a project to make many cuts, each of which was perfect and fast. I was so happy with it I got the Dewalt PVC cutter attachment. One of the problems with these tools is that to keep price down I buy them bare. I already have a fleet of Dewalt Batteries but these don't come with any bag ir storage boxes. If I have the time I am going to use your foam techniques to make inserts for some kind of carrier. BTW: I have had a "D" battery powered foam cutter for over 20 years which I got to work on projects with my son.

It’s nice to see that I’m not on my own my family think I’m weird that when we holiday in Tenerife one of the places I make sure I always visit is Las Chafiras a Canarian large hardware store to see what’s new. Living in the Netherlands I'm very glad there is an Bauhaus nearby, best tool shop in my nearby area. In the Netherlands we have HBM machines it's also an nice tool shop, worth to visit once.

FUNFACT in case you ever wondered about the precision of the "Zollstock" or "Meterstab" or "Gliedermaßstab" (almost none uses the last name for them , but i wanted to add that name aswell) it is categorized in 3 classes indicated by the oval sign in the front. An accuracy class of III in the oval field provided corresponds to a measuring tolerance of a maximum of 1.4 millimeters over a measuring length of two meters. An accuracy of III is common for wooden folding rules. An accuracy class II reduces the permitted tolerance to 0.7 millimeters with a measuring length of two meters. This is a common measurement for metal rulers and tape measures. With an accuracy of I, the tolerance is just 0.3 millimeters. Hard to achieve with a painted scale, which is why it is usually lasered. Those ratcheting pipe cutters are pretty dangerous epic, i remember me using one to cut a full wooden oak broomstick shorter for my little nephew

I use the folding rule often, the Germans invented the the folding rule in the 1800s If you want to draw a few lines or measure angles the the rule is ideal.

Whats so special about the Proxxon Foamcutter is the fact that you can bend the cutting wire in almost any shape. And with the adjustable holding arm its posible to guide it without straining it. That is very handy in model crafting to cut natural forms out of syrofoam, link rocksurfaces and treebarks.

if you like quirky and unique tools, I can highly recommend tool stores in Japan. I popped into a few of them when I spent some time over there a few years ago and was like a kid in a candy store... I would have bought everything in sight had the wife not been with me. I know it's a bit of a trek but you would not be disappointed!

At first I thought you were someone I went to uni with from the Wirral, I don’t think I was right, but, my mate was a massive bargain hunter like you and always on the look out for quirky gadgets and tools, in fact he was a huge inspiration to me in my tool search’s. I try everything I can around my house first before asking for help, not always successfully, but sometimes quirky just is what you need. Loved the vlog as usual 👌 my dad back in the day before tapes were a thing, he used a wooden folding rule as he called it. He had it for years. Also had a tape reel in a brown leather casing.... pure old school 😊

My grandad swore by his wooden folding ruler as he called it. Not seen them in years until i started following your channel! Gotta get myself one. They seem easier to use than a tape measure. Problem is, as you say those easily obtained are cheap compared to those you've get from abroad. Keep up the good work Jonathan

German Here :) I think its very interesting that its calles "Zollstock" in most parts of Germany. We here in Bavaria call it "Meterstab" (i guess you can tell what that translates to), i think thats a more fitting name for it :D The Meterstab is so common here, that nearly every company has their own. Even most breweries have their own branded Meterstäbe ^^ .

Years ago, I watched a BBC doc on art history and the presenter stated something like "here in the German town of [unintelligible]". I had to rerun a couple of times to find out he meant Rothenburg ob der Tauber. That being said, your pronunciation of Rothenberger is correct.

I love to go to the DIY shops, even when I go abroad. Fortunately my wife support visits there. Unfortunately within 30 km we have 15 of them, but at least it is a good training for will power to overcome a temptation.

The Makita battery powered screwdriver you showed at the beginning of the episode is the Makita DF001DW In-Line Cordless Screwdriver. I live in Canada and I picked it up at a local Home Depot during a sale I couldn't tell you the price, as it's been awhile back, but, the kit is quite useful for assembly/disassembly of kitted items, or repair where a lot of screws are involved. Thanks for the episode!

Pro tip take a saw and make 3 little carpenter pencils out of each of them and throw them around your workshop, this way you should be able to find one at least when you need one. xD

I enjoyed the German tool video. I still have a bright green Stanley fixed blade knife from 1977, it gets used at least every week. The ratchet drive bought at the same time broke after being dropped off a 7th floor balcony in Düsseldorf in 1988😂

I really like that cable finder thingy - it's got a slim form factor that really makes it quite useful in my eyes. As for the Marxman, it's a nifty and fun idea - I've personally always took apart a byro pen and used the mine to poke through the hole in the thing I want to hang up 😅

You can use stainless steel fishing leader instead of nichrome wire in the foam cutter. Thinner wire might cut quicker.
