This might happen! During a quarterly update on stream, Paradox's financial officer made the mistake of mentioning the development of a shadowrun game. The boss just glared at him at they moved on, trying to ignore what had been said.
@hymenfiesta

Pretty sure you DON'T wanna see that. Do you really want microtransactions, hold your hand map and markers, awful UI's, and a generally incomplete final product? Triple A does not mean what it did 10 or 15 years ago.

@@hymenfiesta I figured it went without saying there is good triple A and bad triple A. I'm not talking Ubisoft or EA. I"m talking like God of War, Witcher 3, Elden Ring. High quality triple A not loaded with in game stores and microtransactions.

@@slipknotpurity00 Sure but for every God of War or Witcher 3, there's about 3-5 Cyberpunk 2007's and Assassin's creed Valhalla. The problem is that is becoming the norm instead of exceptions. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see another release of this game but I also realize that you have to be careful what you wish for. Kotor is getting this "updated" treatment. I'm scared they will stuff it full of all the normal AAA crap we see in most titles these days. That would break my heart as a die hard Star Wars fan.

I've played through the Shadowrun Trilogy few months ago and I think I fell in love with Dragonfall. Such a nice little RPG with great story, great characters, and great worldbuilding. The starting point of the game, when not only you want to avange your friend, but also try to fill her shoes, is rather unique and makes you instantly care for your companions and the entire Flux State. And the anarchistic Berlin in a world dominated by corporations is like a breath of fresh air.

dude i got this game for free some time ago and finally started it today. i'm BLOWN AWAY. it's been a while since i've been immediately sucked into a game like this, and i honestly can't remember the last time i was sucked into a top-down turn-based RPG like this. maybe divinity? but even that didn't feel quite like this. the writing, the music, the environments, the gameplay... honestly i almost feel the way i did playing baldur's gate 2 waaaay back when i was a kid. and the cyberpunk-meets-fantasy thing is so fresh. i'm enjoying the f out of this...!!

Nice review, I agree with your views on the companions. If you have some time after Hong Kong I'd recommend checking out the Mod trilogy of the Antumbra Saga, the Caldecott Caper and Calfree in Chains. Each one is about the same length as one of the main games and are definitely equal to or superior to them in a lot of ways imo. The maker tries some cool stuff as well.

I love Shadowrun world and lore, donated for the first game kickstarter and played the 3 games some years ago. I played the hell out of the SNES game when I was a kid, something different from all the JRPGs that were more popular back then. As far as I know Microsoft owns the rights to Shadowrun, it would be awesome if the new game inXile is working on were Shadowrun. Also Paradox owns Harebrained Schemes, I think there is a chance that the new dev working on Bloodlines 2 is them.

Hong Kong probably is the best one gamplay and pace wise. The story is not as strong as DF, but overall I found it to be a way smoother experience and the companion quests felt more developed from what I remember. To me it also felt like a true "shadowrunner" experience, since most of the game you are a bunch of dudes running odd jobs to make some cash, discovering some local ministories along the way.
@robertb67
@robertb67 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't finish Hong Kong. I got about 30% into it and quit because of how text heavy it was compared to the other two. My problem was that it's pacing was not as good as Dragonfall. Hong Kong felt way more text heavy with less combat. Dragonfall felt much more balanced between text and gameplay. To be fair though, like I said earlier, I didn't get real far into Hong Kong so maybe the pacing changed and got better towards the 2nd half of the game.

I would agree partially. The gameplay was smooth but the story is all over the place. I would find it pretty hard to give it a recommendation since it gets way too easy after a few missions which renders the improved gameplay a bit meaningless in my opinion. Still, I am curious what he will say about it.

I've played through both HK and DF a few times now with different builds on max difficulty and overall I enjoy DF more exactly for the combat heavy content. Hong Kong is just easy even on hard difficulty, while DF requires more tactics on very hard. I've not played any other 'new' games in like 15 years but these ones sucked me in completely.

Loved how they did the research for theme and feel for Hong Kong. In terms of storytelling it feels more segmented to give the setting more life but the pacing came at a cost. There were npcs whose backstories were oddly specific to actual irl struggles of immigrants living in Hong Kong for example; but with sprinkled in magic. This had no bearing in the overall plot. All just to establish the mood of the city.

I played through Dragonfall a few times and (aside from the times the game got softlocked during the decking minigame, especially during Blitz's companion mission) I had a blast. Mage is definitely the most fun archetype...their spells open up so many possibilities for new strategies beyond just shooting someone or tossing a grenade. Adept was a close second, while incredibly basic on the tactics front, cleaving through like three tiles of enemies at once with a katana and stunlocking them with chained critical hits is super satisfying.

Hey I do like your reviews but I have some criticism based on things that I usualy like to see in reviews. Your reviews are in my opinion missing the following information: - What is the animation and graphical quality - What is the sound quality and diversity (For instance you havent even mentioned that this game has no voice acting) - Do the areas and towns feel alive or static? - How interactable are the environments? That is simply my opinion though, I will continue to watch your videos :)

@@seraphik there's not much of a connection and I didn't find the experience of Returns to be too important in the context of Dragonfall and Hong Kong. So I'd say play the latter two games and if you have an (academic) interest in the first one, maybe check it out. As strange as it sounds, my intense dislike for Blitz during my first playthrough of Dragonfall ended up being why he ended up as my second-favorite companion (Glory is easily the best). By this, I mean, I noticed my antipathy for him when he messed up something that was going just fine, just about every time I took him out - to the point where I realized I was reacting incredibly strongly to him as a character, especially one I didn't like, when others I was more generally supposed to like and feel empathy for, like Dietrich and Eiger, fell more flat. It got to the point where, by the end, I had gone from "Next playthrough I'm making a decker so I don't have to put up with Blitz", all the way to "Next playthrough I'm making sure I ALWAYS take Blitz just to see what he pulls". Once I understood that Blitz's main problem is that he always takes things one step too far, and that I had to convince him NOT to seek closure on his personal quest rather than see it to the finish, he felt a lot more real and sympathetic to me.

Glad you enjoyed it. It is my favourate one of the series. Note you get Eiger's name pronunication wrong. She is named after the mountain as is explained in one of the dialogues. I do think "ruled by anarchists" is something of an oxymoron as well. I guess by best edning you mean the one where the flux state stays independent, not sure it is worth the cost, but that is why it is role playing :D.

How did I miss these SR reviews until literally RIGHT NOW???? Call me weird, I don't care. But Dragonfall is one of my favourite games EVER. It has that status because of the story and writing. This game made cry. The climactic chapter... I *mourned* our dead, for real. You know specifically whom I'm talking about, but not just him. No other game before Baldur's Gate 3 had that kind of emotional power or got me that invested or got me to care that much about my companions and -- especially -- about my neighbors. Like, literally my neighbors. I fell in love with the Kreuzbasar. I want to live there, for real. Yes, it's a relatively simple game mechanics wise. But imnsho it's still quite robust and flexible, from character creation / advancement to combat mechanics... The game has just enough variety and depth to keep me interested. And on hard difficulty the fights are pretty good, actually. There are a number that are puzzles and others that kind of tell stories through the level design. It's not just waves of enemy mobs, actually.

As a long time Shadowrun fan, I found these games to be great, especially the writing, which never disappointed. I just wish the user-generated content tools were better--well, actually, I wish the game had been designed to use real 3D assets, instead of 3D sprite-planes. The most tedious part of building your own content was the placement of assets and map creation in general. These games would/could have been so much more if they had had a bigger budget and more time to develop a framework that was more user-friendly. As one-off RPG's, though, they're all pretty good.

When it comes to NEGATIVES I would have added the Matrix sections, since they're a slog to get through and bog down the entire experience. On the flipside, I view the combat as a POSITIVE since enemy variety is so diverse. You face off against orc soldiers, robots, xenophobic humans, zombies, a rogue A.I., etc.

Great review, and much agreed on most points made. Blitz is the weakest link to me as well and I either pay the money to get a different decker or spec my player character into that path. Oh, and another thing to add would be the whole hacking sub-game which just adds another layer of turn-based combat to most combat encounters. I am not a fan of that particular part of the game, sadly. Looking forward to your take on Hong Kong, though it won't be as much of a leap forward as Dragonfall was to Returns, but rather the exploration of another setting and story with the same tools they have established with Dragonfall.

Yeah, I distincitly remember shelling out for a decker merc on my mage playthrough just so I didn't have to look at his ugly portrait xD And yeah, the matrix was a really cool idea in theory, but they never really managed to make it fun, even in Hong Kong. It just took so long with the whole 3 matrix turns for every IRL turn thing, and with only a single character there was never enough tactical depth - even with the pets you could summon. You just kinda clicked the enemies to death as fast as you could and used your abilities as soon as they were off cooldown, till the game let you get back to the irl game with all its diverse weapons, spells and cyberware abilities. Replacing a bunch of matrix missions with Decking skill checks kinda worked as a way of maintaining the hacker fantasy without the drudgery of the minigame, but only because it avoided the problem entirely.

A decker/netrunner/hacker character (with maybe some low level summoning thrown in) is definitely the way to go to for the PC. The game was clearly designed for the main character to be a decker. The decker companion Blitz's build is poorly designed and is a poor hacker overall. If you use Blitz as your main hacker the game will be noticeably harder.

As he suggests, decker with charisma, and I'd add in the assault rifle specialization. That's what I unwittingly did in my first playthrough and it was fun. None of your companions have assault rifles so yours combined with Eiger's shotgun and sniper rifle gives you good firepower, then you can leave Dietrich for spellcast support and send Glory in for melee. Blitz is really only needed for decking; his submachine gun is ok but not necessary.

I quit Xcom due to the whole "miss at 99% hit chance 2 inches away from enemy's back"-thing. Is this a problem here too ?

The fact that it was called the shadowrun trilogy made me think it was a continuous story akin to baldurs gate where I could take one dude and gain godlike powers over the course of the games. I was disappointed to discover that it isn't the case. I will say, however, that and it's lack of console versions are the only disappointment I have with the trilogy.

Some time ago, I used to write video games reviews for a shitty website, I wouldn't post a review until I 100%ed the game... I mean, how can you review everything without playing everything ? Doesn't make any sense to me.

Playing this now, I got to say that I'm enjoying this for the most part. Definitely nowhere near my favorite turn based game (that goes to Banner Saga and Darkest Dungeon). The combat is garbage compared to others but the atmosphere, world building, characters really carry this game.

I think gaming needs to cater more to mature gamers, looking for something gritty and dark, with immersion and story. Some games get close, but nothing really hits the mark for me.

Shadowrun Hong Kong is better written story. Dragonfall falls into a pit where the bad guys are just bad, like murder hobo -bad. Surely both of these games kept me hooked on the first gameplay. The story keeps me going, but the combat is a slog. The pacing of the game is wayyy too slow. It takes forever to get through combat. Also shaman in these videogames is just a haste bot for your custom character. Dietrich gets to cast aim and haste, while my shotgun main charater goes and blasts everyone to pieces. Cool dude, but written as an aggressive character while his gameplay is casting haste and then being forgotten.

A rather dissapointing trilogy in my oppinion. The writing itself was on point but in terms of mecanics and combat it was rather shalow and a big step back for the genre. At times it felt like I was playing a game that came out 5 years after Baldurs Gate, not 15. The turnbased combat was quite a turnoff. For a game that came out after Divinity Original Sin and X-com it was more of a chore and filler than an actual point of enjoyment.

1st time i played i made a mage, it was a real pain i ended up just being a buff machine, didnt get to toss damage spells, didnt manage to defeat the boss with the minigun at the start. i replayed as a decker with a assault rifle and i just crushed the entire game, even the boss at the start you gotta run away from...and here i was told deckers suck at combat lol
