Welcome to my first Shadowrun RPG review video!
I have read and collected many Shadowrun RPG books over the years. Some of these books have been great, others...not so great. My absolute favorite Shadowrun RPG book by far has got to be Bug City. Everything about Bug City, from the fiction to the artwork, really helps to sell the mood of post-apocalyptic dread and eldritch horror that has infected the Chicago Containment Zone.
Join me for an in depth Shadowrun RPG review of Bug City.

Although we got Chicago Chaos for Shadowrun Anarchy, there is literally one picture in the book that contains insects. It’s great source as a summary of craziness that is Chicago but lacks any real detail. Bug City though is THE book and no matter what version of SR that you run, this needs to be in your library.

I agree. I have Chicago Chaos and the setting in the book is the reopening of the city after the bug crisis.

I've never used Bug City as a full campaign setting. My players have learned to fear most spirits when they encounter them, so they prefer not to deal with spirits as their primary enemy. I have used the setting information as background things going on in the news while the team does their own things. My campaign that I just started at the beginning of this year is set in 3rd edition rules and started in April of 2055, so Bug City was in the Seattle news when it went down in July of that year (earlier in the year for the Universal Brotherhood having issues with corruption and tax issues as far as the team heard). By the end of 2055 the truth had leaked out and my PCs were more informed.

This, along with the Renraku Arcology Shutdown book, are hands down, my favorite shadowrun books of all time. They really tried with bug city, even MY players were begging to stay in Chicago to squash more bugs. It gave me nostalgia of the Earth Defense Force games, so we started porting over weapons from the EDF into 2e. Definitely a solid recommendation for any shadowrunning GM.

All the original books were posts on the Shadowlands BBS, and the comments from the different movers and shakers. Hence the specific style of book formatting. When that BBS fell, they changed the format. (Game changed companies in there too) Fun part is figuring out who is who since they all use handles and not always the same ones. The Laughing Man is one of my person favorites.

Yeah, I remember why they changed it now. Really wish they hadn't, though. The BBS comments were what made some of the books great.

Hey, there is a novel called "Burning Bright" by Tom Dowd covers the outbreak up to the Cermak blast, and was a fantastic read, which surprisingly is not ruined having read through Bug City. If anything, it strings together who some of the posters are talking about and confirming/refuting events.

The continuity people in charge through 3rd edition did a phenomenal job of keeping all the various sources (video games, novels, ttrpg books, etc) blending together beautifully.

With the Insect Spirits, I have always preferred Universal Brotherhood. Bug City was good yet I don't remember it having the same creepy and insidious feel to it that UB had.

I've glanced at UB but never taken an actual look at it, probably because I found it after Bug City. Might have to change that.

@The Sixth World UB does a great job of introducing the Insects to Shadowrun. The data packet is almost like a corporate data file (if I remember right), and the adventure hooks are like a bad horror movie that gets worse the further you go. A great referrene and resoure for an early campaign setting. It has been years since I have played, however, so my memory may be a bit faulty.

The rules for Shadowrun are very dense, and they could benefit from clarification.
