Shadowrun for either the SNES or the Genesis was amazing. Both entirely different games, but both equally good in different ways. Blew my tiny little mind back in the day.

Love them both, but I prefer the Genesis version. I think the top down action RPG that is the Genesis version is a little better than the isometrical point and click RPG that is the SNES version, but you can't go wrong with either.

That’s not accidental. Jake was definitely intended to be a POV character early on, and his similarities to a certain Mr. Case are also intended. Every version they could provide of him was meant as a way in. Either way, watch your back and shoot straight, omae - you already know rule #3.

Definitely in my top 3 SNES games as a kid. This game was mindblowing when it came out...the dark futuristic setting, hiring bodyguards, the supernatual stuff with vampires and orcs and such mixed with upgrading yourself with tech. Not to mention shaking your head some years later when The Matrix movie came out lol. Then trying to explain to people "But there was this game where people would plug their heads into a computer and enter a thing called the matrix a few years ago!"

I LIVED for this game when I was in my teens. Such a cool experience. To go full geek, I even tried to write a screenplay based on it, but this "Johnny Mnemonic"s and "The Matrix"s kinda beat me to the punch. Either way, incredible game. One of my all-time favorites.

I love this game. My best friend as a kid got it when it was brand new. We actually loved RPGs back in the dark ages before Final Fantasy 7 when everyone suddenly loved them. Of course we'd only played what few as kids we could get: Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy 1 and 2, Dungeons and Dragons on Genesis and that was probably it. My friend called me to come over as soon as he got back home with it. I ran down the street to his place and we popped it in. It blew our minds. A Sci-fi and fantasy RPG?! We didn't know that was even a thing. We took turns playing almost nonstop that entire weekend until we beat it. Good times. I'm a Sega guy mostly for that generation and don't own very many SNES games but Shadowrun is definitely among them. And the Genesis version as well. I only paid something like $10-$20 CIB each. I've seen what they go for now and I'm really glad I got them when I did. Not for everyone, but I've played it so much since it came out that I honestly find myself humming the music to this game to this day.

This video was really great! This game blew me away with its world and story, and it's always a treat to see someone cover it. I love both the 16-Bit Shadowrun games, and I can only temper my patience and wait for you to cover Shadowrun on the Genesis at some point.

I loved this game when it rust came out. I never beat it back in the 90s but I recently played it on an emulator and beat it. It’s really fun and has a cool atmosphere. If you like 16 bit games give it a try.

good pick, thanks for covering this. I really advise checking out the genesis shadowrun, and theres some remixed tracks in shadowrun returns from the SNES game. Finally, Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a must play if you haven't yet. Probably one of the best rpgs I've played.

the "mysterious dog" is technically not a dog, she's a kitsune, a fox spirit from Japanese folk lore. If I remember right you can even get her to join your party later in the game, she's also quite lewd in the Japanese version 😜 That also leads into another interesting thing, as, from my understanding at least, the game was actually primarily made for the Japanese market, as the Shadowrun table top RPG was quite popular over there, there is some content that was either cut or censored in the western release that is in the Japanese version. It's also entirely in English with Japanese subtitles that run across the bottom of the screen, which feels even more cyberpunk to me, so it's entirely playable to people that do not know Japanese but do know English. Also it has what I consider to be a better control scheme, letting you use the left and right shoulder buttons as trigger buttons. This also might explain the lighter tone compared the the Genesis game, as my understanding is that the tone is much lighter in the Japanese rule books.

I never played this one, but I was aware of it's existence because I played the original pen and paper tabletop version. The original company that made the tabletop version, FASA, also made another couple of series of tabletop games called BattleTech and MechWarrior, both of which also made their ways onto sixteen bit hardware and I recommend you give 'em a whirl when you get a chance. Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!

I love Shadowrun on SNES but I will certainly admit Shadowrun on Genesis is far more faithful to the source material as far as look and mechanics. Also Shadowrun cemented my love for Nintendo. I actually did find the game to rent but because of that had no instruction manual. So when I was in the matrix I had no idea what to do. I then did what I always did when stuck, called Nintendo’s game counselor line. But the counselor I spoke to had no idea either. However he did take my number down and promised to do some research. A short time later he called me back, told me how to interact with the nodes and what they were for, and I went on to finish the game. But the fact that Nintendo had a game counselor call me back because he didn’t have the answer right away really made me appreciate their customer service even as a young teen.

One of the best games on the SNES. I played it to completion many times the "normal" way, but when I worked out the matchbox (waaay later), the game opened right up. If you get lucky when fighting Drake at the end, you CAN defeat him without using the Jester Spirit. It's almost a sci-fi version of Zelda. Awesome!!

When I first played this, I really wanted to like it, but once I got to a certain point, the combat was just too clunky for me to deal with. HOWEVER, just a month or so ago, they released a hack that lets you use the SNES mouse with it. Granted, that has its own learning curve, but it's much quicker and more intuitive than the original controls, from what I've played; definitely worth looking into, especially if you're used to the excellent rereboot trilogy (Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong). I'm pretty excited to spend more time with this, because Shadowrun has such a fascinating world.

I played around with the ROM of this one once upon a time I might need to revisit it! (because these days it's either that or a repro, from a quick google search anyway) I *did* play through all three of the newer shadowrun games to completion, so if you want more stuff at least somewhat similar to the old SNES game, highly recommended! (the protagonist from SNES SR even makes a guest appearance in shadowrun returns as a brief party member!)

Got really vague memories of renting this from Blockbuster. Funny thing is I had played through point and click adventure games on the Amiga so I was well versed in tedious "click through literally every possible option to figure out the puzzle" mechanics of the time. However this game was just too grindy to do this without a mouse, even a little quality of life would have gone a long way to avoid cycling through conversation menus. Kid me ran out of patience and gave up. The dark violent cyberpunk atmosphere was incredibly exciting though, even if the graphics were simple, had never seen anything like it except for Flashback and Beneath a Steel Sky.

I've tried this one in the recent past thanks to emulation consoles. It is..... not for me. BUT! I do enjoy hearing takes from people that enjoyed it, and I gotta admit, it definitely seemed like something you'd enjoy, FNA. You just have those point-and-click "patience skills™" that Infocom's catalog instilled in you, whereas, I do not. This does remind me I should try one of the newer ones by Harebrained Schemes sometime. Shadowrun Hong Kong and the like. Those are more like srpgs I believe...
